ThunderSizzle··on A teen was suicidal. ChatGPT was the friend he confided in
Exactly the problem. Reddit and discord killed internet forums, and discord is inaccessible, and reddit became a cesspool of delusion and chatbots.
ThunderSizzle··on I run a full Linux desktop in Docker just because I can
Steam and it's remote play options seem more enticing to set up for me.
ThunderSizzle··on Newsmax agrees to pay $67M in defamation case over bogus 2020 election claims
Nearly everything you said is solved with the roll out of early voting for nearly a whole month or more prior to the actual election say.

Also, all rights come with responsibilities, and part of the responsibility of voting is registering to vote, getting your ID, and showing up to vote. We shouldn't bend society to let people who don't want bare minimum responsibility to participate in their right.

We have no problem putting serious restrictions on rights of people in other areas coinciding with responsibility.

ThunderSizzle··on PCIe 8.0 announced by the PCI-Sig will double throughput again
> Probably open Slack and Teams at the same time.

Too bad it feels like both might as well be single threaded applications somehow

ThunderSizzle··on Emailing a one-time code is worse than passwords
Well, no. I'm more attention to what I'm doing if I have to recover my account. My typical login is something I have to do every day for every place, so it's easy to become more careless subconsciously.

Since this is about the human accidentally getting tricked to give a code to a malicious actor, I do think that workflow abuses humans being overtired by too many factors of auth by too many different services. I just want to login and get my thing done, but now I have to spend time waiting on email, etc.

ThunderSizzle··on Emailing a one-time code is worse than passwords
> Using a modern password manager, like 1password, is _easier_, safer, and faster

LastPass got hacked a few years ago and the few passwords my wife had on it were pwned immediately. These cloud companies lost my trust after that.

I'd only trust offline password managers, eg KeePass. Never let me down yet.

ThunderSizzle··on US reportedly forcing TSMC to buy 49% stake in Intel to secure tariff relief
It's about time we tariff Apple as if it's a Chinese company anyway.
ThunderSizzle··on Enough AI copilots, we need AI HUDs
I'm curious what it could possibly be too. I guess he's trying to say the comments you might make at the top of a feature file to describe a feature would be his goal, but I'm not aware of a structured way to do that.

The problem is that tests are for the unhappy path just as much as the happy path, and unhappy paths tend to get particular and detailed, which means even in gherkin it can get cumbersome.

If AI is to handle production code, the unhappy paths need to at least be certain, even if repetitive.

ThunderSizzle··on Enough AI copilots, we need AI HUDs
As in, a developer would write something in e.g. gherkin, and AI would automatically create the matching unit tests and the production code?

That would be interesting. Of course, gherkin tends to just be transpiled into generated code that is customized for the particular test, so I'm not sure how AI can really abstract it away too much.

ThunderSizzle··on Use Your Type System
More specifically, if all entities have a GUID, it's not impossible to accidentally map entity A ID to entity B ID accidentally, especially when working with relationships. Moving the issue to the compiler is nicer than the query returning 0 results and the developer staring endlessly for the subtle issue.
ThunderSizzle··on US companies, consumers are paying for tariffs, not foreign firms
It's clear that a 25% tariff isn't enough in this example.

It's very basic though. Americans have to follow laws, including regulations from EPA, OSHA, building codes, routine inspections (e.g. health inspections), and taxes and permits.

External companies don't face as many of these hurdles. Mexico doesn't have to report to the EPA or OSHA, so if implementing better work environments or cleaner air is important, tariffs act as a tax to instead manufacture in America and, in effect, follow those regulations.

ThunderSizzle··on Global hack on Microsoft Sharepoint hits U.S., state agencies, researchers say
There is waste. A God awful amount of waste, fraud, and abuse. You don't rack up a 1.8 trillion deficit and a debt per capita that is 7x the income per capita without waste, fraud, and abuse.

The problem is that while common sense would dictate those nonsensical expenses as such, they were part of the official process, so it was all legalized, so they avoid the FWA labels because the rule writers have made it so.

ThunderSizzle··on Ring introducing new feature to allow police to live-stream access to cameras
If the government wants access to a camera indefinitely, they should have written permission from the owner directly. It shouldn't be through a third party.

Or put up their own cameras on the street.

ThunderSizzle··on Bypassing Google's big anti-adblock update
I wish many of these suggestion worked for casting.

Browser extensions don't fix a chromecast skipping ads, for example. It'd have to be written into the casting client, I'd presume.

ThunderSizzle··on Bypassing Google's big anti-adblock update
Or rather, don't use YouTube without paying.

Youtube isn't free, and unlike a simple blog, requires tons of infrastructure and content creation. None of that is free, and people wanting that to be free is why we're in adscape hell.

Edit: I'd love for a competitor to youtube, but there isn't. Rumble isn't a real competitor, and none of my favorite channels place their content there either.

I wish there was a youtube alternative that was more of a federation, but every attempt I've seen of federations have been mess.

ThunderSizzle··on Don’t use “click here” as link text (2001)
Although he has a point - it seems overdiscussed compared to other types of accessibility or design topics.
ThunderSizzle··on -2000 Lines of code (2004)
You can do commit squashing in git, right? I know HG history editing wa much more of a pain than it seems to be in git.
ThunderSizzle··on GitHub CEO: manual coding remains key despite AI boom
There's a shortage of software engineers, but not a shortage of people who have those job titles.

Aka, 80% of the work being done by 20% of the people. The problem is you still have to hire the other 80% of the developers to also get those 20%

ThunderSizzle··on GitHub CEO: manual coding remains key despite AI boom
Line numbers are perfect for humans and programs reading files, but LLMs aren't really reading files.
ThunderSizzle··on GitHub CEO: manual coding remains key despite AI boom
> AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. There are no inherent limits around what AI can and can't do or comprehend.

Artificial, as in Artificial sand or artificial grass. Sure, it appears as sand or grass at first, but upon closer examination, it becomes very apparent that it's not real. Artificial is basically a similar word to magic - as in, it offers enough misdirection in order for people to think there might be intelligence, but upon closer examination, it's found lacking.

It's still impressive that it can do that, going all the way back to gaming AIs, but it's also a veil that is lifted easily.

ThunderSizzle··on I feel open source has turned into two worlds
Does it really? Licensing only means as much as the enforcement that follows infringement, and good luck forcing Amazon to lose on a case like that.
ThunderSizzle··on Why SSL was renamed to TLS in late 90s (2014)
1. SSL (probably https in that specific scenario)

2. Graduated and started in 2015.

ThunderSizzle··on Dolly Parton's Dollywood Express

ThunderSizzle··on Self-hosting your own media considered harmful according to YouTube
Might be better to just de-Google yourself. If google is isolated to just one feature, then it's not a big deal.
ThunderSizzle··on Why we still can't stop plagiarism in undergraduate computer science (2018)
It's very much like climate. And like climate, you can use it to certainly predict typical weather, such as a desert not gaining much rain.

If you are disciplined in morality and have a well-trained conscience, that will tend to follow you as long as you keep up the discpline.

ThunderSizzle··on Why we still can't stop plagiarism in undergraduate computer science (2018)
Everyone is a monster, that is true. And I agree that anyone can _kill_ in the right circumstance (e.g. self defense, etc), but I strongly disagree that any disciplined moral character will easily become a murderer overnight.

However, the part you miss is the keyword discipline. To be discipline in morality means that you are aware you can be a monster and you actively choose not to be, even if it means what appears to be a negative outcome for you, relatively speaking.

Morality isn't free. It's not easy, and it requires diligent practice, aka it's a discipline.

By the time your in college, you should have enough discipline to not cheat. If you don't, you have a very untrained conscience.

ThunderSizzle··on Why we still can't stop plagiarism in undergraduate computer science (2018)
A person's true character comes out in hard times.

A disciplined character will handle hard times well. An undisciplined character will not.

Compassion exists, sure. But morality doesn't disappear just because something bad happens. Compassion should be sought after before resorting to cheating, not after.
