ThunderSizzle··on Toll roads are spreading in America
That should only be the case if the fine was actually prosecuted in court.

Plenty of people pay the fine and admit to guilt to avoid being further penalized with court fees, etc. In other words, many people just pay a injustice fine to avoid more trouble. This would punish those type of people even more.

Civil, but unreasonable. An unpaid maintainer of a free library isn't a vendor, and shouldn't be treated in any such way. A vendor is paid.

I can't tell you how many people are confused that (1) Microsoft dropped "Core" from .NET 5+, and that .NET 4.8 and .NET 8 are not the same thing.

Microsoft jumped from .NET Core 3 to .Net (Core) 5 to avoid people conflating .NET Core 4 with .NET Framework 4.

Now tech adjacent people in my world, including people from Microsoft, think .NET Core 8 and .NET Framrwork 4.8 refer to the same version.

Luckily that problem will go away as we do our now biannual ritual of upgrading .NET versions, frustratingly.

ThunderSizzle··on Americans no longer see four-year college degrees as worth the cost
In many languages, the basic version can be just one line of code, if you know the right libraries to leverage. C# leveraging Linq, for example:

    String.Join(" ",
      String.Split(" ", sentence).Reverse()))
ThunderSizzle··on Google boss says AI investment boom has 'elements of irrationality'
I'm not telling them how to live their lives. I'm just predicting the path that is made based on the choices made.

Everyone is on a journey, and the path their journey takes is partially the choices made. People are allowed to think hard about their choices, and the choices of others.

If they want their path to go their, so be it, and but it's cruel to not discuss the ramifications of choices made.

ThunderSizzle··on Google boss says AI investment boom has 'elements of irrationality'
"All people are the same" argument basically negates thousands of years of history, basic human knowledge, etc. Biology impacts quite a bit. For example, if your family comes from Asia, chances are your more prone to lactose intolerance than European-based areas. It's also why most Asian dishes don't have any sort of cheese or dairy - there was no real history of that type of agriculture compared to Europe. To ignore all this and throw it out so that people can pretend to be the exact same is to throw all of history out the window, and to pretend that we're not standing on shoulders of giants that helped craft modern civilization as we know it.

Men are Men, and Women are Women. But Women wanted to be like Men, so they did, but Men don't like Women as Men, and Women are shocked to learn this.

Now people don't even know what a Woman is.

ThunderSizzle··on Google boss says AI investment boom has 'elements of irrationality'
Men are workers. Not all work needs to be a "worker-drone", but yes, all men are built towards some form of work, and that work typically is around an item of sorts.

Men can work all sorts of ways, and that can include raising kids. Women tend to be a lot less happier leaving their kids to go toil with the dirt.

ThunderSizzle··on Google boss says AI investment boom has 'elements of irrationality'
A woman who intentionally went corporate and avoided having kids, and wasted her maternal instincts on someone else's profits, will suffer when their body clock catches up to them, and the company leaves them behind.

You can't go back and get pregnant. And your marriage probably ended in divorce already anyway by now, which is a whole more amount of suffering.

ThunderSizzle··on Google boss says AI investment boom has 'elements of irrationality'
It's do-able, but the housing crisis needs to be resolved. People will never own a house if they didn't have skin in the game by 2021. Salaries are not rising to match housing price inflation.

Specifically, both house prices and interest need to go down heavily. Sadly, they used higher interest to try to lower prices, and that didn't really bring prices down.

More supply isn't helping much either, as there is no diversity of supply, and builds aren't undercutting the market yet.

ThunderSizzle··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
Interesting. I've done a lot of manual work to set up a whole nginx layer to properly route stuff through one domain to various self-hosted services, with way to many hard lessons when I started this journey (from trying to do manual setup without docker, to moving onto repeatable setups via docker, etc.).

The setup appears very simple in Caddy - amazingly simple, honestly. I'm going to give it a good try.

ThunderSizzle··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
You could use a self-signed cert, since cloudflare doesn't care about that.
ThunderSizzle··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
I think partially is not having to worry about certs is a nice reason to hide behind the proxy. Also, to help hide your IP address, I guess.

Of course, on the other hand, I know that relying on Cloudflare cert's is basically inviting a MITM attack.

ThunderSizzle··on Drilling down on Uncle Sam's proposed TP-Link ban

ThunderSizzle··on What if tariffs?
Aren't most subscriptions significantly cheaper outside the US? I don't know specifically about those, but YouTube's premium is pennies on the dollar in places like Ukraine, Turkey, etc.
ThunderSizzle··on What if tariffs?
> Note that what I'm saying doesn't concern itself with changes in pricing due to this.

That's the problem with your semantics then. If the manufacturer no longer makes the same income because they can't increase the final price, in effect the consumer didn't pay the tariff.

ThunderSizzle··on What if tariffs?
Tariffs existed before Trump, and existed by other countries against the US.

Did those not introduce inefficiency? Actually, it probably produced more inefficiency because most people were probably under thr impression most of the world was under free trade, hence the existence of the WTC.

Not knowing a tax is much more inefficient than knowing a tax.

ThunderSizzle··on Advent of Code 2025: Number of puzzles reduce from 25 to 12 for the first time
That would "require" a timeline shift for it to start on Christmas run until the Ephinany.

Although I don't think anyone really knows what the 12 days of Christmas are anymore.

ThunderSizzle··on Why UUIDs won't protect your secrets
The natural step is a multicolumn key (e.g. the key includes all three data points).

I've seen tables where primary keys were 7-10 columns long. It's a nightmare to work with when joining.

ThunderSizzle··on Why UUIDs won't protect your secrets
Well, there is a segment of the database side that thinks natural keys are better than artificial keys. A credit card number is a natural key, so I can see thr database logic to it.

The failure of depending on natural keys is simply highlighted by that problem.

ThunderSizzle··on Americans Are Using PTO to Sleep, Not for Vacation–Report
The erosion of the spending value of the dollar (aka the amount of inflation from post-covid government spending), and therefore most people's salaries probably have more effect on people's feelings about their salary and how far it's not going, which in turn negatively impacts feelings about work and overall stress.

Why work if you can't even afford a house or healthy groceries for yourself or your family?

ThunderSizzle··on US airlines are pushing to remove protections for passengers and add more fees
Fiber optics is getting multiple providers in several markets, if not many. They do bury/lift multiple lines, even in more rural areas.

I think the biggest issue with airlines is they act as only an airline. The first company to realize they are a transportation company and can get you door to door will be great.

E.g. an airline that can seamlessly get you to/from the airport via a local premium/private transit line that can get you to your home or destination.

Whose to say "cited findings" have any more value than "anecdata".

The institutions that build these national and international statistics do so with bias and goals, or without complete data. For example, how can a bureau make a national statistics on crime accurate when cities intentional report crime incorrectly to look better in statistics.

To think "cited findings" is gospel truth is naive. I know it's highly desired here, but I stand by what I'm saying. Data is lovely, but garbage in, garbage out, and most national-level data is complete garbage with an agenda or bias or naivety.

ThunderSizzle··on Ask HN: Is your company still hiring junior engineers?
Not sure what world your in, but LinkedIn never helped me found a job.

Word of mouth is much more powerful than trusting something like LinkedIn, which also has been pwned how many times?

It's a useless service that doesn't actually replace job listings, personal connections, job postings, etc. It's basically Facebook for people who think being a 100% worker is everything about life, or a way to get spammed by recruiters.

ThunderSizzle··on Ask HN: Is your company still hiring junior engineers?
> Reach out to people on LinkedIn

Not to nitpick, but can we stop peddling LinkedIn. All I've seen from it is spam and self righteousness.
