Thetawaves··on NYU professor fired after students who got low grades complained about him
I'm sure most autodidacts can appreciate this, but I can't help but consider:

He is paid to teach - is he performing that role effectively if his students aren't learning?

Thetawaves··on UK power station owner cuts down primary forests in Canada
Faster growth is generally less dense growth as well. In the physical sense that is - tree rings are bigger, the material is lighter, and as you might guess - weaker.
Thetawaves··on Children may be losing one night's sleep a week due to social media use
Have you ever read the thing! Plenty of doom to go around.
Thetawaves··on Children may be losing one night's sleep a week due to social media use
And before social media they were losing it on web forums, and before the web forums on the telephone, and before the telephone on the bible.
Thetawaves··on Why UML “Really” Died
Not just forgettable, but vastly different meanings. And these meanings have changed between versions. You really have to get close to the spec to grok what is actually being conveyed.
Thetawaves··on Why UML “Really” Died
I considered the explanation was simply that diagrams created in UML are unreadable to lay persons.

Excessive use of visual jargon, and changing standards combine to make everybody a lay person, even those versed in a particular version of UML when confronted with a different version.

Thetawaves··on Superbugs are a “second punch” after pandemic
Are you suggesting the vaccines have effects against bacterial infections?
Thetawaves··on Korean nuclear fusion reactor achieves 100M°C for 30 seconds
Linky? It seems preposterous to assume that we will be able to map the energy budget of earthlings over a thousand millennia.
Thetawaves··on Korean nuclear fusion reactor achieves 100M°C for 30 seconds
Don't ignore the fact that uranium reserves would not last 100 years if we used it as our sole power source.
Thetawaves··on Korean nuclear fusion reactor achieves 100M°C for 30 seconds
Hardly. The amount of energy trapped by the atmosphere is vastly greater than the heat capacity we would wish to be able to produce, and the corollary - the amount of energy irradiated by the earth into space is vastly greater than amount of heat we wish to produce.
Thetawaves··on The U.S. diet is deadly. Here are 7 ideas to get Americans eating healthier
Is this simply accounting for the additional labor required to prepare candied almonds?
Thetawaves··on Cancelling student debt is essentially printing money
This is not how the US monetary system works at all. Money collected in taxes is DESTROYED. It will never enter the economy again.
Thetawaves··on Tesla wants videos of its cars running over child-sized dummies taken down
I'm going to repeat a perception I saw on here that seems to ring true.

We all know Tesla/Elon is 69% full of shit.

Thetawaves··on Man who built ISP instead of paying Comcast $50K expands to hundreds of homes
Good thing you will never find out.
Thetawaves··on Man who built ISP instead of paying Comcast $50K expands to hundreds of homes
This is literally exactly what would happen. It need not be blood thirst motivation; simple profit dynamics are enough to ensure this outcome.
Thetawaves··on Man who built ISP instead of paying Comcast $50K expands to hundreds of homes
How do you stay at peace? A strong deterrence.
Thetawaves··on Mark Andreessen allegedly 'immensely objects' to multifamily zoning in Atherton
Eat the rich.
Thetawaves··on Ask HN: Does anyone values code quality at all?
I don't think you've addressed the subjective nature of this question. I have looked at prized code and found it full of problems. I have submitted perfect code (according to me) to have it shredded in code reviews.

Code 'quality' is a red herring. Evaluate code on objective terms: does it accomplish the goal? How will it react to changing requirements? How much time did it take to deliver?

Thetawaves··on Hardly Anyone Talks About How Fracking Was an Extraordinary Boondoggle
A mere 300b to obtain the cheapest energy in the world.
Thetawaves··on Ask HN: Why isn't TikTok owned by the U.S. government?
Downvote all you want - the evidence is widely distributed. Failure to acknowledge reality just makes you delusional.

Thetawaves··on Ask HN: Why isn't TikTok owned by the U.S. government?
Do you need proof that 1 + 1 = 2?
Thetawaves··on A brief history of nobody wants to work anymore
> Supply of effectively every good is higher than prepandemic.

How can you possibly claim this? Where have you been for the last year? Energy embargos, dramatic slow downs in trade with China, excruciating shortages of basic/fundamental electrical components.

I have to assume that you have ignored all evidence that doesn't support your narrative. The trouble is this inflation would have happened with or without individual stimulus moneys.

Thetawaves··on Why Ruby Is More Readable Than Python
Having worked on both python and ruby applications in my professional life, I am shocked that anybody could claim that ruby is in any way ... readable.
Thetawaves··on In 2018 Trump warned Germany not to become dependent upon Russian Gas
Russia can't just sell the gas to somewhere else. The logistics issues prevent any wide scale utilization to the same level of a massive undersea pipeline.
Thetawaves··on Inflation rose 9.1% in June, even more than expected
> If you believed in inflation north of 3%, why the hell would you own bonds?

Inflation protected bonds earning nearly 10%?

Thetawaves··on Working parents are having a rough summer. Some co-workers don’t want to hear
I did you a service, you should know how pathetic this sounds.
Thetawaves··on Working parents are having a rough summer. Some co-workers don’t want to hear
Your perspective just looks weak.
Thetawaves··on Ask HN: Why is there protobuf,Avro,JSON Schema, etc. instead of ASN.1?
ASN.1 has been around _dramatically_ longer than protobufs - I don't think I can take lack of libraries as a legitimate reason.
Thetawaves··on Ask HN: How would you bootstrap a telco?
Be careful ... its hard to become the embodiment of the thing you hate. Running an ISP can be rough on your reputation :)
Thetawaves··on HN is up again
Imagine running a website that earns you millions and millions of dollars and it all gets taken out by a couple disk failures? Amateurs.
