The_DaveG··on Ask HN: Any good alternatives to pen and paper?
I typically set things up as projects. When I'm working on the projects, almost daily over to make sure I remember things correctly. I also make additional notes when I'm going through the project so I can have everything in one place. A lot of the time I may work on one thing, then it's a couple of weeks and I need to get back into it.

At some point, everything will get written into a digital scope of work document or deliverable. At that point, most things become superfluous and I don't look back into notes.

Every once in a while I'll want to remember a name or a book and I like being able to have those at the tip of my fingers. Those things are typically in a different notebook.

I take a lot of notes and honestly enjoy it.

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: Any good alternatives to pen and paper?
Yeah, I'm still trying to do more on the iPad, and it's working well. At the end of the day, I really like the feeling of pen on paper, which is what it will keep me from fully going paperless.
The_DaveG··on Ask HN: Any good alternatives to pen and paper?
I'm currently going down this route myself. I fill 6-10 notebooks a year and am wondering if there is a better way. For me it's specifically how can I take what I write and then make that editable text so I don't have to duplicate work.

My current test is an iPad Pro and Apple pencil with GoodNotes. It's not inexpensive and I didn't buy the tablet specifically for this reason, but it's a test.

It's good for some things: meetings notes, proposal work, things I need to send to other people.

It is not a replacement for pen and paper. For me I like fountain pens and paper. So I still have one or two notebooks that I'm using for daily schedule, etc.

The_DaveG··on Rejecting a job in Berlin after signing the contract?
Tell the other company that you have an offer on the table with a clock on the offer. If they are your top choice tell them this and if you're the top candidate, they should find a way to move the process along for you.

Agree with what the others are saying about signing and then not going to work for company 1 might cause issues in the future, especially if you're looking to work in the same industry. If this company is going to sponsor you with a Visa, it's a significant commitment for them. I have personally never seen a company go after a person who signed and then moved in a different direction. I have know companies with a policy to never offer that person employment again.

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring for non-tech roles
Generally I fall into running a Sales/Marketing group or Business consulting, but my background is in various startup and Industrial/technical fields.

I have found one full time job, a few clients, and have seen/connected with a few groups I know from places outside hacker news here.

Personally, love reading the boards to find new companies and technologies that I didn’t know about and leads me down the rabbit hole.

I would think that there could be some benefit to having more non-technical job posts on the board. As to a stand alone who’s hiring... I would think it would be harder to get people to post to another thread as opposed to getting more non-technical roles and filtering.

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2019)
Really love your products. I've done the Chromecast, the dongles, and everything else. Then I stumbled across Airtame, at a customer's site, then again with a friend. After using them a few times, I'm sold.

You're on my to-buy list for the new company!

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: Who's Looking for a Co-Founder?
Do you have a website or demo you can share?

I'm in the space where B2B and ML collide with the Industrial space. Always looking for a ML solution that fits the need and can offer to the large groups that are interested.

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: Who's Looking for a Co-Founder?
In my trade show experience, the $300 scanners are terrible and most of the time don't scan. I'm not sure if it's typically a scanner issue, a QR code issue, or a system issue, but everything the scanner actually works it's a surprise!

I'm on the wrong side of the country, but will keep an eye on you guys and hope to see you at some shows soon.

The_DaveG··on Show HN: Time Door – A time series analysis API
I do a lot of time series analysis in the industrial sector and this is very interesting.

Second the request for demo and examples. Even the reoccurring problem would be really useful.

I'm certainly going to follow you guys as this is part of a larger problem I work with everyday.

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: What problems your industry has that desperately need a solution?
It's not just in Fintech, it's a problem in most industries, I deal with it in automation most days. It's a skill that is not easily leaned (well).

The_DaveG··on IoT Sensors Monitor a 1,400-Kilometer Canal in China
It's an interesting project, I really wish that they would have talked more about how the system has been implemented. As in what system are they using and how close to "real time" are they getting the data? Those are a HUGE number of sensors and without even considering how they are getting the information back to any gateways, it would be a gargantuan task to build anything out that would be easily digestible my a person in a Control Room.
The_DaveG··on IoT Sensors Monitor a 1,400-Kilometer Canal in China
There's an entire section of IIoT, the Industrial Internet of Things that most people don't know or think.

I'm guessing they called it IoT so more people would click on the title.

Corso Systems | Software Engineer, Controls Engineer| We are a 100% Remote Team! | Corsosystems.com

Corso is different. Some people have called us strange, they work for us now! We’re committed to doing things differently, so check out our YouTube Channel or read the blog posts and see that we’re more that just a bunch of people in suits.

Generally, Corso is a Systems Integration Firm, specializing in Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), SCADA, and other Business System Integrations (ERP and anything else you can think).

We’re expanding into brewing and so we’re looking for a Software Engineer to join the team to help us build it out. Check out BrewTel: http://corsosystems.com/brewtel/ that’s what would be first on your plate, we’ve got the plan and are looking for help to execute. If you’re a craft beer fan or home brewer and are able to use that experience to help build this out, that would be amazing!

Ideally you’d have some experience in: C#/ASP.NET MVC, or Rails, and SQL, Web Services, and API’s. Plus you’d be able to take a project and run with it yourself with minimal help. We’re not micromanagers and we trust everyone to get their work done.

If you’re interested in learning more about the industrial side of the business to make you a more well rounded individual and help with some of the other jobs (because most of the dev work will be easier than what you’re doing right now). Looking to join a small team already making a difference with big dreams, we should talk.

On the chance that there are Controls Engineers on here who are experiences in Ignition and/or Siemens WinCC OA, AB and Siemens PLC’s drop me a line, we should also have a conversation, we’re growing fast.

Email me: Dave@CorsoSystems.com We’d love to have a conversation.

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: What does your company spend too much money on?
Yup, I've brought my own stuff in before, because it's what I wanted. Happy that I now work at a place that isn't like that!

I could see what you mean by that, but in this instance, the owner was a notorious penny pincher. It was because he was cheap. This was also back in the early 2000's when the company culture was that of drinking during work on Fridays. You may think it was the 80's... everyone called the place "The Country Club"

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: What does your company spend too much money on?
This is so terrible. I can imagine someone got a stern taking to...
The_DaveG··on Ask HN: What does your company spend too much money on?
Sometimes the biggest waste of money is being cheap: Penny Smart, Dollar Dumb.

Like a company that will spend a lot of money on hiring people, but won't give them a decent laptop because they had a different one from 7 years ago. Or refuses to give someone the training that they need.

Or a company that shuts the heat or AC off exactly at 5pm to save a couple of bucks on electric cost (and chase all their people out).

The_DaveG··on WeWork is going to acquire Meetup
Libraries are great places to work from! Typically quiet, good internet, nice people, and many larger ones have rooms you can sign out or rent for meetings.
The_DaveG··on If you aren’t embarrassed by past work, you’re not improving
Agreed, the article was good, the title didn't necessarily drive home the point of (I'm guessing) that as you get more experienced, you'll understand what really matters in business and understand other people's perceptions.
The_DaveG··on There are over a billion outdated Android devices in use
For the 5X's, the were a great deal, and it would cost more than the phone to get into the extended warranties. Not worth it for our purposes. As long as they keep working, we'll keep using them.
The_DaveG··on There are over a billion outdated Android devices in use
Two years is completely too short, even three years if you purchase mid-cycle is not enough.

I own Nexus 5X's on Project Fi, one bootlooped and was replaced, the other still going strong after ~20months. I also have a Pixel XL acquired like 7 months ago, both of those should outlive the updates and giving Google the money directly, they should take care of their customers.

Far from an Apple fan boy, the 2016 MBP and 2017 iPad do not worry me about getting forgotten in the ever ongoing updates.

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: What is your favorite place to find work?
My last job came from the Who is Hiring post here. We've hired people off of here, referral, Reddit (x2), and LinkedIn. I will always suggest reaching out to people and having a conversation with a place that you want to work and have a conversation or speak with them directly. All the better if you can get a referral to them.
The_DaveG··on The Best Podcasting Equipment for a New Podcaster
For some reason, I always click on these podcasting equipment links. We just cut episode 001, so we'll go live after we cut a few more.

I think we'll have to put together out list of varying equipment as we cast from very remote places.

The_DaveG··on Why Must You Pay Sales People Commissions?
Solid article, there is a middle ground that is missing, that or a base plus bonus of the team. Some of the best sales teams I've ever know work based off a bonus for the whole company meaning they have a huge incentive to help the other members of the team get better and collaborate for the betterment of the company.

This will create the best sales team, but will not attract the top X% of sales people.

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: Have I been mislead with my job offer?
For future reference, I'd always try and talk to the hiring manager and/or the person you'd be reporting to (if they are different) to see if there is a good personality fit.

Ask what a typical day looks like and it will get them to start opening up about the position and what's to come. That might be projects or how you'll be mentored or anything to get you up to speed.

Like was mentioned, get everything in writing and if you emailed the recruiter, show it to your new boss and explain your expectations for this position. It might be a shady recruiter or a misunderstanding that got you here. All industries are small and everyone important is never more than a couple of degrees away from the person you could have burned. I'd give them a chance to make it right before you leave, if only so you can tell the next place that you gave them a chance to make the mistake right, it will show maturity and give them the feeling that you're level headed and that they would want you to work for them.

The_DaveG··on Ways a VC says no without saying no
I've had this exact thing happen to me (while talking to customers). Recently had the person answer after the third or fourth follow up and needed more time as they haven't gotten to getting all the sign offs.

That being said, I'm not a telemarketer, I work with high end Integrations and before you get a proposal we've had a few conversations. If the answer is no, I'm respectful of that and I want to know what we can do better next time.

I'll keep following up until I've gotten an answer.

The_DaveG··on As California’s labor shortage grows, farmers replace workers with robots
I work for a Systems Integration firm, and while we haven't automated a farm, we work a lot in Automation. If you're interested, you can check us out at CorsoSystems.com we do some pretty cool work and we do a lot of tinkerings with Raspberry Pi's and more. We do a ton of backend work with building databases and getting the information in and out of them, connecting everything. Guessing you'd need hell with that at some point.

On a side note, I feel your pain, my wife grew up in a farming community (kids were late to school because the cows got out) and there is food rotting in the fields because the migrant workers haven't been there en mass the last couple of years. With the INS crackdowns, it's only gotten worse. We love farm stands and join CSA's when we can find them, you guys are great. Keep fighting the good fight!

The_DaveG··on Ask a Repair Shop
Not a problem, if you ever need anything, you can reach out and I'll help if possible Dave@CorsoSystems.com
The_DaveG··on Ask a Repair Shop
A lot of SI's are married to a particular software platform, and it's been that way for a long time. We all know the big player who owns 70-80% of the market, and most people will implement via them (or that's at least what they make most of their money off of).

Some of us (I work for an SI) actually find the correct solution for the problem. We use all 4 major players, build our own stuff when appropriate, and would look at other solutions if the opportunity arrises, we love what we do.

Let me know if you're still looking for a solution and I'd be happy to give you another opinion.

The_DaveG··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2017)
Giving this an up vote for putting 43North on the same line as YC :-)

I didn't have a horse in the race in 2016, but I've been happy to see you guys do so well over the past ~year. Every time I see you growing it makes me smile!
