The_Blade··on Bending Spoons buying Miro for $1.355B
and others like Aol. and Eventbrite, but where it really hit me was Evernote. i tried to cancel and then Bending Spoons (BS for short) tried to charge me several times at a subscription 5 times the cost. i think something about pre-auth tokens across the sea on a PayPal account almost old enough to run for the House of Representatives might have had something to do with it, but IIRC BS has already had cash money rulings against it for shady-to-illegal billing practices

its reward? successful IPO. here is an Economist article from a couple months ago: https://www.economist.com/business/2026/07/01/can-bending-sp...

i'm forever chasing the dragon of cocktail napkin + physical stickies + Balsamiq, and have never even used Miro, and even i let out a "ohhhh no" in a welp, should i just go back to bed tone seeing this

i'm just waiting to wake up to news of Luca Ferrari buying Inter Milan like some old world Mark Walter

The_Blade··on Tao: Open math problems being non-renewably mined by AI
> He didn't even proof the last theorem of Fermat directly, he proved some conjeture that someone else before him, proved that it implied Fermat last theorem...

I think that was Ken Ribet?

Grigori Perelman and the Poincaré Conjecture is more interesting. IIRC he turned down Millennium and was decidedly not all about the Fields Medal - mostly because Richard Hamilton didn't get credit? Anyway, I am grateful I had the opportunity to learn about Poincaré in college taking a few classes from a professor who was a key contributor to the conjecture and got a Fulbright for it when I was there

what happened with Bill Simmons bragging about using his daughter's boyfriend to place proxy bets for him on FanDuel (who Bill is partnered with) is endlessly entertaining

Trump Jr. just pumped 300 million into Polymarket and also has a stake in Kalshi so, i'm not sure who thinks the DOJ will really do anything. this is fentanyl on the phone but there will have to be a few examples like some low-levels House members or state senators alongside sports casualites

The_Blade··on Three sites made 215,128 “best software” pages for AI. Perplexity cites them
i actively assume it is worse since, for example, spez signed a 60 million dollar deal to give Google access to the firehose. so then if you have niche, highly engaged subreddits infested by AI bots creating posts, then commenting on posts, then being trained on that content... you have Ouroburos eating its own poop, and models have less then zero incentive to evaluate the quality of a source, especially if they are the source

The_Blade··on How art invented humanity
I happen to be re-reading Deleuze right now (and knew Bergson at some point), and I'm not really sure what the author adds to the equation. I.e. art is the pure desire-machine, schizophrenic and completely deterritorialized, whereas pornography is the desire-machine territorialized by determinate conditions of e.g. OnlyFans. If anyone else knows Deleuze I'd be curious; him and Guattari is not exactly a vibe hang. Long-winded way of saying it seems like a lazy dichotomy.

My data point is I got to stare at Wheatfield with Crows and The Death of Marat within 24 hours and I was walking around Brussels a drooling mess, only capable of leaving decoy cheap sunglasses for pickpockets

it is fun to get a reminder not regretting being obsessed with Ayn at 18 alongside my duct-taped copy of Foucault's Pendulum (note: the actual pendulum is at Musée des Arts et Métiers which was by far my favorite such place after a couple multiday trips to Paris). i still feel The Fountainhead is pretty far from Atlas Shrugged

Since this morning I happened to grab Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia by DeLeuze & Guattari and inside (17 years ago, with a Pilot v5) i wrote:

"I have a feeling this needs to be revisited after another 30 years of production, process and consumption"

well, that time is now and AI is the body without organs du jour

(i am a weirdo really enjoying this thread of conversation right now)

The_Blade··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
i read half of Troilus and Criseyde out loud to myself one summer in college and i may be a weirdo but it paid dividends. unbowdlerized Chaucer is the tits
The_Blade··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
i had no science, but in college for shorter works i always thought handwriting, typing, and reading it aloud was my allowing my brain to hit a problem in three different (not more, different) ways before / even if ever being in front of another human being (or now their non-union AI equivalent)

i still feel writing something down helps with memory formation, in part because i remember the act of writing it down. cocktail napkins and whiteboards way better than ipads also

i remain obsessed with Pilot v5 rolling ball extra fine; i would say Pilot g2s are for proles but the outcome if you leave it in the dryer is far less severe

The_Blade··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
not as much as I used to but I still take handwritten notes when reading something I deem worth doing so by some personal semi-rational algorithm. my favorite exercise ~15 years ago was reading People's History of the US and Kissinger's Diplomacy at the same time, and taking notes in the same notebook in parallel columns. Naturally I went into product

Marginalia is the best! I have a handwritten note about Ayn Rand in my 27 year old copy of Enchridion, a great reminder that she is like chicken pox, better catch her as early as possible. And several books such as I Claudius held together with duct tape. And soy sauce stains in Gargantua and Pantagruel from the place my grad school gf worked. Those count.

A bit of irony, going through old stuff I found a copy of Neal Stephenson's In the Beginning... was the Command Line on top of handwritten running logs from sr yr of college. In that book, there was a ticket stub from the time I was 86ed from an amusement park. (I did not eat enough after training that morning.) I was escorted on a golf cart back to our car where I finished Neal's now charmingly quaint essay with the plastic handle listening to Nirvana.

This was August 2001 and Mac OS X had barely come out. Maybe AI rhymes where Chinese free open-models clean up but someone proprietary figures it out. Which is sad as someone dominant in the ecosystem right now is the equivalent of Gary Kildall.

your title was rewritten by AI, correct? :)

the slop doesn't bother me as much as the bowdlerized nature of said slop (and search results). sure, there was a lot of slop after the Lapsing of the Press Act (1695), but it was human slop with convictions and syphilis!
