TheUndead96··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
He should just go self-hosted. If anyone has the resource to make that happen it is him.
TheUndead96··on Ask HN: Production Prolog in 2020?
I think Prolog and logic programming will have a second renaissance. I think at the very least a general artificial intelligence would require a logical inference engine similar to Prolog.
TheUndead96··on Electrons May Well Be Conscious
I agree with this. There are similar arguments that you cannot prove reality is real. Sure, but how does that help us solve the energy crisis or world hunger? It is philosophical musical chairs. Aristotle and Plato investigated how to live a better life.
TheUndead96··on Castor: A browser for the small internet (Gemini, Gopher, Finger)
This is cool as hell
TheUndead96··on Can AI Become Conscious?
In Peter Godfrey-Smith's book "Other Minds", he describes a framework for thinking about the relative levels of subjective experience in animals. He distinguishes between subjectivity (maybe more broadly "awareness") and the internal monologue that is so characteristic of humans. I would estimate that an AI could initially have consciousness in the way that an octopus does: distributed, probabilistic, fluid. With enough raw intelligence I think any mind could emulate another, and eventually communicate with us in a way that we deem conscious in a human sense.
TheUndead96··on Breaking RSA Security with a Low Noise D-Wave 2000Q Quantum Annealer
oh boy
TheUndead96··on YouTube has deleted the account of David Icke
This is the exact type of escalation that is not helpful. This caricatures the argument that institutions are not perfect. In the beginning, the WHO said the virus could not be spread between people. And YouTube & friends are actively censoring to imperfect sources (since all sources are ultimately imperfect).
TheUndead96··on YouTube bans coronavirus-related content that directly contradicts WHO advice
Even without endorsing any conspiracy theories, I don't think the WHO has proven themselves to a faultless institution.
TheUndead96··on Lean Book: The Hitchhiker's Guide to Logical Verification [pdf]
I have bounced off Lean a few times. What I wish I was able to achieve with it was to derive new and useful conclusions in mathematics. I can never seem to get past the "variable is an integer" examples. I realise that the objective in using these tools is exactly the problem in formulating your expression. I think it would be awesome if tools could generate novel mathematics. Where we could express "P=NP" and have computers just churn on that for a few thousand CPU hours.
TheUndead96··on [dead]
I don't think this work is inherently morally questionable. I just got weird chills when I saw it got actively removed from the front-page of HN. There is another thread asking why this happened. If it turns out that there is a good reason then I am willing to accept that.
TheUndead96··on Norwegian asks students in poor healthcare countries like USA to return
ಠoಠ
TheUndead96··on Mass amateurization
This is the exact point that I believe is understated. The gig economy is pure supply-and-demand. Customers are saying that they do not need a professional hotel or taxi service. The historic prestige of these services is predicated on the fact that before the internet there was no better way to connect customers and service providers. If there was a tier below Economy on planes, people would use it. This is because there will always be a portion of the population (maybe even a majority) who strictly only care about the service rendered and the outcome achieved.
TheUndead96··on Post YC Depression
Encore looks like an awesome project. What would you say is the value-add compared to other serverless offerings by cloud providers? At the moment simplicity/ease-of-use seems to be its biggest strength.
TheUndead96··on Ask HN: What's the best resource for learning modern x64 assembly?
I used this book in university, and it was very informative: http://rayseyfarth.com/asm/
TheUndead96··on Eric and Bret Weinstein: The Prediction and the DISC [audio]
I found listening to Eric call out his brother a bit difficult to listen to. There is most likely rapour between them as brothers that makes the "you are boring me" segments less egregious.

Even still I found the points of discussion very interesting. I think Eric is raising some very important points of discussion, and I listen to The Portal regularly, but I find his personality to be a bit abrasive (on the podcast and on Twitter).

TheUndead96··on Three New Longevity Startups
I think longevity is vastly underestimated. Besides the natural innate desire to live longer, every extra year of healthspan is an opportunity to reap benefits on long term investment in friends, family and financial instruments. Knowing that you may live to 150 changes how you might approach investing and spending your time in money and skills development. People with the conscientiousness and forethought to apply themselves to important but not urgent tasks might experience compound interest the likes of which we have never seen before. Imagine if Warren Buffet was only half way through his healthspan.
TheUndead96··on Dating of bones from Indonesia confirm Homo erectus roamed planet for 1.8M years

TheUndead96··on Gsuite suspended my account because I paid
Considering my email address is the gateway to basically every online internet service I use, and that Google owns 30% of transcontinental internet infrastructure, I've just had the very scary realisation that Google has the power to silence individuals off the internet at will.
TheUndead96··on Animal-like embryos came before animals
I think this is the premise for the next Alien movie
TheUndead96··on Siberia: 18,000-year-old frozen 'dog' stumps scientists
It is insane how well preserved these remains are
TheUndead96··on Show HN: Hide Likes Everywhere
@dkthehuman Do you plan on releasing a Firefox version?
TheUndead96··on Simple-twitter: A bare-bones Twitter clone implemented in a single file
There are a lot of very strong opinions in this thread on whether this code would be "production ready". I don't think that is the point here. This is awesome because of its brevity, it is like writing a ray tracer in 100 lines of C. It demonstrates that a task which might be perceived to highly complicated can be reduced to a file, of which the size many of us would just define a single class in such a system.
TheUndead96··on New 5G flaws can track phone locations and spoof emergency alerts

TheUndead96··on Study Estimates 50% of Sites That Use WebAssembly Use It for Malicious Purposes
As a developer writing web applications, I have not found the use-case for WebAssembly, as excited as it makes me about web performance. I think that having it integrated into front-end frameworks could be one such use case (like Microsoft's Blazor).
TheUndead96··on Ask HN: What is the most beautiful piece of code you've ever read?
I remember seeing Maxwell's equations written in Lisp (I believe it was in the Structure and Interpretation of Programs). This made me feel something very profound, although I am still unable to put this feeling into words.
TheUndead96··on Rxdb: A reactive database where you can subscribe to the result of a query
This project has all of the goals that excited me about RethinkDB, I hope this project is more successful.
TheUndead96··on Seventeenth-century Europeans ate mummies (2015)
What a bizarre species we are
TheUndead96··on Experts who say we shouldn't worry about superintelligent AI are wrong?
Agreed, and like Nick Bostrom says, even if AGI is not obtained in our lifetime, it might still be beneficial to dedicate some human effort into preparing for it now. In the same way that the worst effects of climate change will be felt not by the adults of today, but the children of infants.

For what it is worth, I believe that an intelligent system only needs to be a fraction of human intelligence to be dangerous (perhaps not to the existence of the human race, but maybe specific nations/creeds)

TheUndead96··on Kiss – A Linux distribution with a focus on “less is more”
Just wanted to say this looks kickass. It is way easier to tear things down than to build them.
TheUndead96··on Dropbox no longer follows symlinks to items outside of your Dropbox account
Alternative headline: Dropbox is dying, consider moving your data soon.
