TheSoftwareGuy··on CO2 certificates: Greenwashing in the African savannah (German)
IMHO, the only activity that should have ever been considered as carbon-negative is actually taking carbon out of the air, and storing it in the ground somehow. IT is extremely expensive, which highlights why it is so important to prevent carbon emissions in the first place.

All of these suggestions which seek to reduce someone else's carbon output somehow, seem fraught with moral hazard or other significant problems.

Do you know of any places to learn those things? Kafka seems pretty interesting to me

TheSoftwareGuy··on Why CMake sucks (2021)
It's been a very long time since I dove down this rabbit hole, but last I did, I found that CMake is definitely the least-bad build system for C++. At least for large projects that span numerous teams.
TheSoftwareGuy··on Magnetic method to clean PFAS contaminated water
This sounds pretty great! It sounds like they created a chemical solution, which coats the PFAS stuff and makes it magnetic, so it's easy to remove with a magnet. The solution can be re-used up to 10 times, according to the article.

I do wonder what happens to the solutions after that, I hope the solution itself isn't very dangerous

Interestingly, in this case Silk Road is the Victim, not the accused.
TheSoftwareGuy··on Ask HN: Can I avoid being nuked by Stripe?
Do they have some guarentee not to ban you? Relying on reputation alone will lead to exactly the same situation
TheSoftwareGuy··on Samsung’s “repair mode” lets technicians look at your phone, not your data
That sounds like repair mode
TheSoftwareGuy··on Commit Messages Don’t Matter
To counter, any merge request with more than 2-3 commits is probably too big anyway
TheSoftwareGuy··on Being on call sucks
7. If you are on-call during a holiday, you get an extra vacation day.

This is impoprtant because if you are on-call, you are working, and if it is during a holiday, then that is one less holiday for you.

This could actually be pretty good too. People would be much more willing to cover for others on holidays

TheSoftwareGuy··on What a gas stove ban means for restaurants
Here's a paper about how methane leaks from gas stoves contribute to climate change: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.0c00437 The methane contribution alone is significant. Not to mention the CO2 from actually burning the gas
TheSoftwareGuy··on What a gas stove ban means for restaurants
Honestly we should be banning new gas hookups (as proposed here) and going even further to incentivise removal of existing ones. Climate change is a life or death situation, and we need to be acting way faster. That alone is reason enough.

The other reason is that it is better! You can actually get an induction stove to heat up faster than a gas stove, if it is wired properly

TheSoftwareGuy··on Greece passes first climate law, vows to cut dependence on fossil fuels
Well, yeah. Coal is one of the worst power sources, in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. Of course it needs to be phased out. This is nothing new
TheSoftwareGuy··on CRISPR tomatoes genetically engineered to be richer in Vitamin D
Tomatoes are still eaten plenty in places where they cannot even grow, because we are able to ship them. They may not taste as nice as farm-fresh heirloom tomatoes, but clearly people still eat them.

On the other hand, most people do not take Vitamin D supplements, even if they should.

TheSoftwareGuy··on Why are some egg yolks so orange?
It’s not that crazy the more I think about it. If he has a spouse and 2 kids (so 4 people in this house), and each person eats 3 eggs for breakfast everyday for 30 days that’s 360 eggs
TheSoftwareGuy··on Actuarial Life Table
> The expectancy in the 0-1 age group takes into account all life events that will affect the child over time

But this is not taken into account in the Death Probability column, is it? Because we also see in that column, consistently better outcomes for women, even for the very youngest age groups

TheSoftwareGuy··on 25 Gbit/s internet as a normal customer
For backbone infrastructure yeah. But most people don’t have their home router on a battery backup. Unless you are talking about backbone stuff?
TheSoftwareGuy··on 25 Gbit/s internet as a normal customer
Probably better video calls for one thing. If more bandwidth is available then you don't need to do as much work copmressing & decompressing the signal on each end
TheSoftwareGuy··on 25 Gbit/s internet as a normal customer
I'm confused, 50W is not a lot of electricity for an outlet. Why would you need batteries?
TheSoftwareGuy··on Silenced AirTags with disabled speakers are popping up for sale online
>Isn't enforcement of laws how we're supposed to make people not break the law?

It is the method of last resort, really. Ideally, people have enough success in their life that they do not have to resort to crime. If that fails we have some other protections: we lock our doors, etc. Lastly, if people still commit crime we try to prosecute them

TheSoftwareGuy··on America’s Covid job-saving programme gave most of its cash to the rich
I thought it was obvious at the time that some of the money would end up going to people who didn’t need it. But we were okay with that, to an extent, because enough would get to the people who did need it
