TheLilHipster··on Why Facts Don't Change Our Minds
I'm constantly overhauling my own bias and opinions on subjects when presented with new information, I don't do this actively - its more subconscious, which is against the results of these experiments. The results were the subjects estimating a scenario (after being told they were deceived). The scale of measurement was the positive and negative bias they had towards themselves.

They started with a negative bias, which was then contradicted by a neutral fact. The outcome was a negative leaning estimation.

The others started with a positive bias, which was then contradicted by a neutral fact. The outcome was a positive leaning estimation.

A logically sound conclusion, a "mean" outcome. This doesn't seem like some kind of eye-opening revelation... am I missing something here?

TheLilHipster··on A Nintendo Switch Phone?
I posted this thread to the Nintendo Switch sub yesterday and got absolutely obliterated for it.

It's piqued my interest though on how far away we are from a truly portable, phone/handheld combo.

With VR and machine learning focusing so heavy in the GPU space, the size of the GPU hardware is getting to a point where its nearing viability, right? or wrong?

Battery tech is accelerating too due to the electric vehicle market, we must be getting close.

I feel the switch is the first real step in that direction. Thoughts?

TheLilHipster··on A hello world post
The internet doesn't create the content, people do. I feel your guilt is misplaced.

You shouldn't be wanting to give back to the internet, you should be wanting to give back to other people.

So long as you're a genuine-at-heart and mindful person, this should be a regular occurrence for you regardless.

Every human interaction you have is an opportunity to give back :)

TheLilHipster··on Why Your Best Thinking Is in the Shower (2014)
Fuck this is relatable. I'm quite a solitary person, I'm constantly in my head contextualizing and overhauling past opinions and bias.

I thought this was mainly computers that taught me to think this way, didn't realise there was documented philosophy behind it.

> There is a hell of a lot of deeply condescending woo here.

Your comment right here is the only "condescending woo" I've read in this thread.

TheLilHipster··on The sad truth about depressive realism (2006) [pdf]
> I'm enthusiastic about life advice when it's practical and presented to people who are searching for it.

I appreciate the experiences shared here, while completely anecdotal they are all telling me the same story and they're directly relate-able.

Your point (I think?) is: those experiences are indigestible to someone who is currently suffering depression.

But to me, that in itself is an entirely different discussion...

TheLilHipster··on The sad truth about depressive realism (2006) [pdf]
My experience is very similar to the post/experience from throwaway7312 above.

> You mean well, and what you're saying may be helpful to people who struggle with certain feelings from time to time. But statements like these are extremely frustrating for people with actual depression.

Discussing depression goes down-hill everytime someone pivots to what people "should" or "shouldn't" say. We're not trying to actively console someone with depression here, we're merely having a discussion on our thoughts/ideas/experiences of depression, so I think your defensive retort is quite misguided.

Regardless, I agree with your statement, but I'm at a loss to your intent. I've been depressed and yeah, it's not really helpful when others say something that translates to:

> Depression is the result of how you interpret things.

But looking back on it - at least from my perception and reality of the world; it's 100% truth. However, is stating this helpful? is it the right approach to trying to help someone who is going through depression? absolutely not.

Don't let the social politics muddy the raw discussion when appropriate, please.

> Your belief in the inevitability of depression is only leading to more depression.

This was definitely the biggest hurdle for me. The echo-chamber of "This isn't your fault! depression is a disease we'll have a cure for one day!". The vortex of negativity and the constant apathy was fed by these sorts of statements.

Mindfulness was my cure. An ultimatum of either "I end my life" or "I do what is within my control, to change the way I think." It's alot more complicated than that in reality, but the heart of what I'm trying to say is there.

It's quite eery.

Not much specific information on the what and why, but this isn't a scenario of 'guy uses ssl therefore is terrorist' as the first article leads me to believe.

TheLilHipster··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
Eh?

I still use a first generation Nexus 5. SNES/N64/PSP emulators run like a dream. Apps open/transition instantly.

What performance metric are you even using?

TheLilHipster··on Melinda Gates Has a New Mission: Women in Tech
I don't really think there's much of an issue here. Equal opportunity ≠ equal outcome.

I truly believe equal opportunity exists and the issue is more cultural than institutional.

TheLilHipster··on The Piracy Box Sellers and YouTube Promoters Are Killing Kodi
I'd recommend Plex instead. It's effectively a simpler, more polished version of KODI.

(IMO)

TheLilHipster··on Spoiled Rotten (2012)
Define a "functional" family.

Define what makes a social dynamic "dysfunctional".

  > humans are under pressure to prove their worth to society.

This sounds like a really dysfunctional society to me.[sic]
I'll have to disagree with you there kristine.

Lisa makes a lot of sense - even then, it's still only a piece of a massive social jigsaw mindfuck.

Our phones are the the most personal electronics we have, they bloody well should be exciting (for us geeks at-least).

TheLilHipster··on Alienation Is Killing Americans and Japanese
I've been working corporate IT for 4 years now.

I'm quite attractive and analytically intelligent, but lack social and emotional intelligence (always been a loner due to childhood circumstances).

I feel alienated, I can't relate to others in this rat race. The constant dick waving and competition driven by social media, it's just such a turnoff.

Without motivation or passion for games like I used to, life feels empty. Suicide is my wholehearted plan when this company goes under, it just seems like the reasonable, logical end.

This rant is more of an anecdotal story, take from it what you will - in short, I can relate to this article.

TheLilHipster··on This is what it's like to grow up in the age of likes, lols and longing
Insightful enough, but not all too surprising.

I'd be really interested in how these internet-centric lifestyles develop later on. I've always thought Gen Z has the potential to be the most intelligent generation alive simply due to the infinite access and more advanced aggregation of information. But does this come at the cost of dysfunction due to the bombardment of consumerism, narcissism and emotional isolation?

The feeling I get from this story is the daughter is very involved, nearly consumed by the game of social media. Does the infinite access to information provide them the wisdom they need to mature past it? or will it continue to consume them?
