TheJoeMan··on Why XML tags are so fundamental to Claude
I'm sorry for not elaborating. My original complaint is with Anthropic! The 7-figure Anthropic engineers couldn't be bothered to write down how to use their tool. And there is no way for the tool to already have latent knowledge about how to use itself since that wouldn't have been part of the internet/books/github training material.
TheJoeMan··on Why XML tags are so fundamental to Claude
That first image, “Structure Prompts with XML”, just screams AI-written. The bullet lists don’t line up, the numbering starts at (2), random bolding. Why would anyone trust hallucinated documentation for prompting? At least with AI-generated software documentation, the context is the code itself, being regurgitated into bulleted english. But for instructions on using the LLM itself, it seems pretty lazy to not hand-type the preferred usage and human-learned tips.
TheJoeMan··on Layoffs at Block
Even better, start a new company with the previous coworkers who are all versed in the same industry as you just left! Block is profitable, so there’s a lunch to eat.
TheJoeMan··on Why every automaker is quietly bringing back the inline-six engine
I cannot easily find a used M340i for sale private-party. Owners must love them to death, I need to check the sales figures. One of my favorite long-term review articles on Car and Driver https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a30143002/2020-bmw-m340...
TheJoeMan··on Open Letter to Google on Mandatory Developer Registration for App Distribution
Elon's vision for the X "everything" app. It's great for them, now every single thing you do has the full gamut of privacy permissions. Playing a "mini-game"? Full accurate GPS coordinates available to it because you also have the ride-hailing "mini-app".
TheJoeMan··on ASML unveils EUV light source advance that could yield 50% more chips by 2030
And they’re now going to hit each drop three! times instead of two, and increase to 100,000 drops per second. Very hard to imagine.
TheJoeMan··on Ask HN: Chromebook leads for K-8 school in need?
As a former student using Chomebooks in Highschool (9-12), a K-8 laptop is a major “ew”. Paper textbooks have tactile reality, room for exploring/reading out of order. Paper exams you can skip around the questions easily, and if the teachers are really that backed up to grade them, good ole’ scantrons are doable. An assigned laptop has 0 attachment from the students and just get neglected to pieces, and no one is “learning computer skills” by clicking around Canvas lectures.
TheJoeMan··on AVX2 is slower than SSE2-4.x under Windows ARM emulation
I tried searching "SSE2-4.x" and this is the top result in DDG and Google, so I was initially confused what instruction set the article is referring to. However, this appears to be shorthand for SSE2 through SSE4? Perhaps a rephrasing of the article title could be helpful.
TheJoeMan··on I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?
But it isn't just a brain-teaser. If the LLM is supposed to control say Google Maps, then Maps is the one asking "walk or drive" with the API. So I voice-ask the assistant to take me to the car wash, it should realize it shouldn't show me walking directions.
TheJoeMan··on US businesses and consumers pay 90% of tariff costs, New York Fed says
If rent or business taxes go up, the business may either eat the cost or eventually raise the main price, they don’t tack a “rent offset fee” on the final bill. But with tariffs, up to a point the business dgaf because they just pass it through as a separate “junk fee” line item.
TheJoeMan··on FDA intends to take action against non-FDA-approved GLP-1 drugs
That’s part of the FDA scrutiny, it’s likely the Hims/Hers pills wouldn’t have much bioavailability, yet marketed as “same active ingredient”.
TheJoeMan··on Pinterest CEO fires 'obstructionist' employees who created tool to track layoffs
"After this article was published, several Pinterest employees contacted CNBC and disputed the company’s characterization of the incident.

Pinterest fired the engineers after they posted instructions showing how to prompt the company’s staff directory to show who was laid off, the employees said. The employees said Pinterest’s claim that the engineers created custom software was inaccurate, and said the directory tool is accessible to anyone in the company."

So just like using inspect element is hacking, querying open staff directories is creating obstructionist tools, got it.

TheJoeMan··on Lessons learned shipping 500 units of my first hardware product
Slightly more nuanced, I think we no longer have domestic industries making the components for the machines that make stuff. Many machine shops have Haas mills, but lots of Haas's suppliers are overseas. Regarding injection molding, we actually have better suppliers for the prototyping phases such as https://www.protolabs.com/ .

TheJoeMan··on Apple I Advertisement (1976)
I appreciate that the software and updates are made "free" to me, and it may be their right to disallow "downgrades" and have time-limited windows for redemption. However, as a developer for their platform, it is quite frustrating that these restrictions are at odds with industry practice to guarantee support for older OS versions than current. I cannot purchase a new iPhone, put iOS 18 on it, install my app, and test updating the iPhone to 26. This can have very real negative consequences for the very same shared customers of mine and Apple's.
TheJoeMan··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
I was actually going to comment on the main post, how well tuned the AI seems with it's placement of random electrical wires and junction boxes that seem to match my impression of renderings-vs-reality.
TheJoeMan··on That's not how email works
I take bigger offense to the message that says "your emails were returned undelivered", because that is a lie. A bank, sent to a customer, a lie. "Scale" should never be an acceptable excuse but somehow we let it slide when it comes to the internet.

As an aside, at least the email wasn't "a new document is available in your secure portal click here to view it"!

TheJoeMan··on People who know the formula for WD-40
Not all PFAS are the same. PTFE is a large-chain molecule that does not break down into the harmful small water-soluble PFAS's for the usecases I listed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polytetrafluoroethylene
TheJoeMan··on People who know the formula for WD-40
As an alternative for better lubrication of two-metals-rubbing together (door hinges, simple tools, etc) I use Tri-Flow because it has PTFE that stays as a white powder. If you have a stuck bolt, PBBlaster wicks into the threads better. And if you have sticker glue, use GooGone.
TheJoeMan··on LED lighting undermines visual performance unless supplemented by wider spectra
The newer phosphor-coated "filament" LED's also have this "inertia" which is nice. And no other electronics to fail also since they are just series-connected LED's.
TheJoeMan··on Scientists identify brain waves that define the limits of 'you'
In college I tried to participate in a rubber-hand-illusion while wearing an EEG, but the stimulation was done by the researcher manually and I never felt the illusion. This does show an interesting twist, using a robot arm for repeated and accurate stimulation.
TheJoeMan··on Ubisoft cancels six games including Prince of Persia and closes studios
I'm a crazy person who reads game credits at the end, and whenever I read about "location scouts" I usually think "oh look, an executive's family took a vacation".
TheJoeMan··on Ubisoft cancels six games including Prince of Persia and closes studios
I dislike that an executive is quoted as blaming "rising development costs", essentially blaming the workers/salaries, with no rebuttal. This is especially suspect with the timing of closing an office that just unionized.

It might be frequency-bias, but of the companies downsizing/closing in my area I see almost all of the published explanations are blaming wages. And there can't be a really fair counter-view by the journalist because what are they to do, interview a laid-off worker at the business? I doubt someone would go on the record lambasting their former employer, but it would probably turn up the truths such as fraud or waste.

TheJoeMan··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
140,000 miles is a lot of use in 7 years. "expected" design life of cars can be 10yrs/100,000 miles. Sorry to hear about your drivetrain issues. I don't know about the Tucson in particular, but many manufacturers are lying about the transmissions having "lifetime" fluid when the transmission manufacturers themselves recommend fluid changes around 60-80k. But if you don't change it, yes technically the car will make it to 100k, but then no shop will touch the transmission fluid for fear of wrecking it.
TheJoeMan··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
When your LED brake light goes out, you have to purchase an entire assembly as the LED's are part of the PCB. There are no "bulbs" for a few dollars. And with the matrix LED's a few may go out, now your brake light "sort of" works, so it's even harder to justify replacing.
TheJoeMan··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
What they want is the app to pay for ads placement for their own app, to have to out-bid the competition.
TheJoeMan··on GitHub Incident
It’s sad that I can’t interpret if you mean to actually shoot your rap video on film, or have an AI generate it lol. Either way you’re going to need RAM.
TheJoeMan··on Postal Arbitrage
To the author, would you consider changing the “key photo”? I sent the weblink to a friend, and the key photo in iMessage is the pregnancy test and they got the wrong impression about the site/prank. Pick the lemon or can of beans perhaps?
TheJoeMan··on Oral microbiome sequencing after taking probiotics
I recall they were offering a few people mail-in swabs to test if the colonization had taken hold, but haven’t read any follow-up.
TheJoeMan··on North Dakota law lists fake critical minerals based on coal lawyers' names
This is a good example of “not fixing the whole problem”. Once a “fake” mineral was discovered, a good idea would have been to demand an expert reviews the entire list.
