TheFullStack··on Startup tsunami in silicon valley
@dquail - understood. I certainly did not mean to suggest that every startup or most startups operate like this. Only that I have personally seen at least one whose founders seemed to be out of town more often than in the office - especially over the summer. Of course, under the pretense of 'business' it's all well and good. For example, they simply had to attend a conference at SXSW but I'm sure enjoyed some of the extracurricular activities during their week-long stay. 1 week trip - for one conference.

I'm in New York, not in SV but there's a lot startups over here too. I am a contract developer and have worked with startups for about three years. I can honestly say there are founders that are getting a "free ride" on investor expense - taking long vacations over the summer, building product forever and not releasing (this gives founders an excuse not to be out talking to customers - after all, the product isn't ready), and so on. It's a scam. It's a great way to avoid getting a real job while being able to say to friends and parents that you're doing something exciting - just on the beach on Montauk.

Right, that makes sense. It's so hard to keep track of all the etiquette among the various posting sites like Reddit, HN, and such. Makes my head spin.

Thanks man.

I guess. If you were born in that country and every day you dealt with negative portrayals of people who like you (William Hung, Long Duck Dong, etc), you would probably understand.

More importantly, I'm not asking you to understand. It's not your responsibility and I don't blame you for any of this. It's just something that Asian males have to learn to deal with. We just have to man up and deal with it.

I'm never going to change your mind on this and you will never change my mind so let's leave it at that.

True. I acknowledge that. The deal comes with both the good and the bad. That's all I'm saying - don't forget the good. For me, at least, it's quite good. It's almost shameful how much I get paid by the hour to write code while watching the Mets play (supposedly) professional baseball on TV.

Monkeynotes, don't take this the wrong way but you will never understand what it's like to be called a derogatory term as minority in a society that constantly denigrates your background. It's just not the same. It just isn't.

I'm also an Asian male and you're right about the implicit (and sometimes explicit) discrimination we deal with. I was at a party last summer and someone called me a "Jap" but was "just kidding." White people don't deal with this.

However, I also benefit from being an Asian male software developer. Whenever I meet new people in business, I am automatically assumed to be smart which has proven highly profitable. Finding work is never an issue and I make quite a comfortable living because people with money assume I am good at what I do - I have less to prove than a programmer who is say, Latino or perhaps female.

My solution? If you can't beat em, join em. Why don't you volunteer to teach at a girls code school? Might meet some cute female instructors who also like programming - pretty rare. Use your strengths in whatever way you can.

As a post-script to the "Jap" guy, a few weeks later he got fired from his job and has been out of work since. He is a high school educated white male in his late 20s. We all have our challenges and if being white also included being stupid, ignorant and money-less like this guy, I'll take Asian.

ok, I guess that makes two people now. So what's a better color in the context of fullstack360.com? Maroon? Navy Blue?

I think it's just a matter of taste. To say they look "horrible" is a stretch isn't it? I mean, you are the only person who brought up and I showed it to somewhere around 50 people - most of whom are strangers with no concern for my feelings.

The top posts are just interesting news stories skimmed from HN. Full disclosure: I worked on the site with reddog9287.

TheFullStack··on How About an iOS App Idea Contest?
But would 200 people submit their app idea for professional critique and advice? My hourly rate for consulting is much higher than $25. As a bonus, the idea may be selected for development.
TheFullStack··on How About an iOS App Idea Contest?
At this time, we do not seek to be partners with a startup. This may change in the future but at this point, we will develop the app with no strings attached. We will certainly use our in-house libraries but we place no restrictions on the re-usage of that code. Anyone can use it as they please but your team cannot claim proprietary rights to our in-house standard libraries.

So if your app reaches #1 in the iTunes app store, your company/team would retain all the profits and never have to mention that we developed your M.V.P. That should be covered in http://www.fullstack360.com/site/faq but it can be edited if people don't think it is clear enough.

TheFullStack··on How About an iOS App Idea Contest?
Thank you so much! We hoped this type of offer would be as attractive as possible to anyone with an idea by setting a price just high enough to discourage anyone who isn't serious while keeping it low enough to make it enticing to all. We would like to think it is a worthy investment, since everyone will receive professional feedback.

If you have any other thoughts/ideas, let us know!

TheFullStack··on Google Maps and Waze
As a long time user of Waze, I have begun to notice that their ads are becoming increasingly annoying and distracting. For example, it will give me a pop up covering the screen asking me if I want to go to Taco Bell. While I am a huge fan of Waze, by deviating too far from being just a GPS makes it a bit frustrating at times. If they are looking to monetize the platform, there are surely other ways besides covering up the map!
