TheCleric··on RI judge intervenes after ICE mistakenly detains Superior Court intern
There is going to have to be a reckoning for these agents who think that they can do whatever they want.
TheCleric··on Microsoft: We see all the backlash and we know we have a lot to fix in Windows
As someone who doesn’t touch Windows anymore without hazard pay, part of the problem is a lot of the ancillary business apps are Microsoft as well. For example Outlook, which technically exists on Macs, but is missing half the features.
TheCleric··on Building a JavaScript Runtime using C
I was a little disappointed that this was “just” a wrapper for JavaScriptCore.
TheCleric··on Dear Rubyists: Shopify Isn't Your Enemy
No one should live poor, but any entity that takes donations (code, money, etc.) should be VERY above board with disclosures and conflicts of interest. The point isn't that they can't make money, the point is it shouldn't be a secret.
TheCleric··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
Agreed. I used to toy with Linux at home, but now it's my daily driver along with Mac OS.
TheCleric··on Power To The People: Plug-In Solar Now Legal In Utah Homes
Yeah I had neighbors who despite the fact that they had solar, couldn’t use them when we lost power last year for Helene.

And I know at my house I have a master cut off switch.

TheCleric··on YouTube is now full of crap AI slop
LPL appears on camera. Just not his face.
TheCleric··on YouTube is now full of crap AI slop
That’s likely due to the fact that Veritasium has PE investment now.

TheCleric··on YouTube is now full of crap AI slop
The even worse ones are "POLITICAL FIGURE owns/destroys/etc. JUDGE/POLITICAL PARTY/OTHER POLITICAL FIGURE"
TheCleric··on YouTube is now full of crap AI slop
I have a pre-existing list based on my interests.

Sometimes those creators will mention other channels or I will hear about a channel from someone else and I’ll check them out.

TheCleric··on YouTube is now full of crap AI slop
I don’t see any because I only watch channels I trust.
TheCleric··on OpenFront Has Been Stolen
I normally would wholeheartedly agree with you on this, but in this situation it seems to be a bit ironic that his project is a derivative of another project, and they unilaterally changed the code they forked under the MIT license to AGPL.

So while moral != legal. In this case I find it both legal and morally a bit of just desserts.

TheCleric··on OpenFront Has Been Stolen
It is stricter in the sense that AGPL says you have to release source code even if you only distribute the software to a user via a network (i.e., browser) as opposed to a direct/binary distribution.

So in my lay (possibly incorrect) opinion the AGPL made the difference in them having to release the code at all. So in that way it did help. If the user thought this would stop clones then they don't understand software licensing (nor open source).

TheCleric··on Why warm countries are poorer
I see a lot of correlation but not a lot of causation.
TheCleric··on The (economic) AI apocalypse is nigh
What can we do? Short those companies.
TheCleric··on The truth behind standing desks (2016)
And stuff that I can’t even read because it’s considered archived.
TheCleric··on Reddit.com/R/fosscad down? [Reddit bans 3D printing communities]
I think in this case if a shooting happens that can be linked back to a Reddit post they might be afraid of a potential lawsuit.

Note: I’m not advocating this or saying anything other than this may be their reason.

TheCleric··on David, Please Stop Posting
Yeah the problem with that (OP’s) line of thinking was you had people new to the scene who only see one side and assume a whole community and a that way because no one appears to be pushing back.
TheCleric··on Disney reinstates Jimmy Kimmel after backlash over capitulation to FCC
Because they still have leverage over local stations and in turn those stats have leverage over ABC/Disney.
TheCleric··on Dear HN. Please make the Hacker News header stick to the top of the browser
No thanks.
TheCleric··on Bosses can reject applicants who support rival football team to existing staff
Depends how loudly, frequently, and annoyingly they mention "Oh I'm just not a fan of football."
TheCleric··on Type checking is a symptom, not a solution
For anyone who just wants a taste of this I highly recommend the game Shenzen I/O. The game is your writing a subset of assembly for products at a manufacturing facility.
TheCleric··on Type checking is a symptom, not a solution
Maybe I’m in the minority but I’ve never associated a type system with scale/maintainability directly.

I treat them as I would unit testing: a useful tool to catch bugs early and if you’re skipping it, it should be an intentional decision where you’ve accepted the trade offs.

TheCleric··on X-COM creator Julian Gollop discusses his most important games (2019)
So to make it less mediocre you’d make it more predictable?
TheCleric··on X-COM creator Julian Gollop discusses his most important games (2019)
I feel completely the opposite. What would it look like in an alien war? Would we have defectors like we do in actual war? Could some of those fighting for the aliens actually be enslaved and riot?

All of this adds depth and texture to a game instead of "humans good, aliens bad". The world isn't simplistic and I really don't want a game with a theme to either.

TheCleric··on AI startup Flock thinks it can eliminate all crime in America
Oh I'm VERY interested in seeing how this will eliminate white collar crimes like wage theft, embezzlement, ponzi schemes and the like. Or do they mean the kind of crimes THOSE OTHER PEOPLE do?
TheCleric··on Mastodon says it doesn't 'have the means' to comply with age verification laws
The back and forth discussion that led to this was extremely naive from Mastodon’s perspective. Instead of talking through how this was a bad law all around, all he wanted to do was have a pissing match over who’s decentralized solution was better. This will absolutely have the same effect on Mississippi users on US instances as it does on BlueSky users on US infrastructure. To assert otherwise is inviting legal troubles.
TheCleric··on A teen was suicidal. ChatGPT was the friend he confided in
Well everyone seemed to turn on the AI ethicists as cowards a few years ago, so I guess this is what happens.
TheCleric··on Ergonomic errors in Rust: write fast, debug with ease, handle precisely
This just feels like recreating exceptions, but with more complicated syntax.
