Temporary_31337··on SQLiteStudio: Create, edit, browse SQLite databases
Then report it via the appropriate channels with as much detail as possible and steps to reproduce. It looks like you are complaining without having even used the software.
Temporary_31337··on A summer intern once saved Valve from a near-fatal lawsuit
Can we appreciate that Vivendi Universalis went after Gabe personally and no one is in jail for this.
Temporary_31337··on Please stop the coding challenges
Aside from all the comments saying that coding challenges aren’t as unrealistic as you think, there’s also the fact that there seems to be an oversupply of good enough coders for some roles so companies need to filter beyond that. Yeah inclusive environments etc is a nice to have but if you can get a top level coder that can solve problems quickly and not crumble under time pressure, even better. Why settle for good enough if you can get really good instead?
Temporary_31337··on 100-MW solar farm just broke ground in Wisconsin
I assume OP was talking about US manufactured solar panels. Just buying PV from China is good for China only- they keep the profits, expertise and can choose to deploy the best panels for themselves if they feel the need.
Temporary_31337··on Bill Atkinson has pancreatic cancer
Wait till you find out what the risk of Alzheimer’s is for someone over 100 years old. (Hint at 120 it’s currently estimated at around 100%)

It’s basically what disease is going to kill you first.

So I find efforts by Bryan Johnson to increase his lifespan pretty idiotic- he won’t be able to avoid the cancer and the Alzheimer’s risks as he ages - to my knowledge nothing In his routines is very effective against those.

Temporary_31337··on Passport Photos
Where from and is it curly?
Temporary_31337··on Ask HN: How would you launch a privacy-first, Instagram-like social network?
I see many takes in the comments but no one seems to be addressing the fact that privacy and social are opposites of each other. I think you could state the problem better- for example sharing with the audience that you expect to share with or some better controls on who sees what. But these alone are not good enough differentiation and in theory Facebook has very fine grained privacy controls and no one bothers to set this correctly and advertisers still see more than what you set etc

It is a hairy problem but it’s hard to frame it in such a way as to make it attractive enough to the masses to switch from existing networks

Temporary_31337··on A 94x speed improvement demonstrated using handwritten assembly
How does this compare to the naive GPU performance on an RTX GPU?
Temporary_31337··on Where the Digital Sidewalk Ends
Fwiw Strava probably has the best data for this- you can tell how good a cycling path is from average cycling speed.
Temporary_31337··on Building a better and scalable system for data migrations
I work for a nosql db vendor. We don’t have a fixed schema so there are no migrations. If you want fast access to some parts of data you just add an index and reindex async. If you need SQL for Tableau or PowerBI you just add a view which is also like an index.

But the underlying data and it’s model can be in flux and we handle exabyte scale ha dr rebalancing etc

Temporary_31337··on The PlanetScale vectors public beta
I work for another db vendor and we also have added vectors support. What’s crazy is that customers were not really asking for- just surfing the hype wave like everyone else. Why would someone store vectors in an SQL db rather than a dedicated vector db with support for native graph / vector semantics?
Temporary_31337··on Advice for first-time inventors from a patent engineer
Unless you have a business that can easily support these costs AND a plan to make extra money from the exclusivity that patent award gives you then I don’t see how this makes financial sense for any small entrepreneur.
Temporary_31337··on Singapore OKs 4,300km subsea cable for importing electricity from Australia
Single point of failure
Temporary_31337··on Life expectancy rise in rich countries slows down: took 30 years to prove
Definitely disagree with at least the ‘can freely choose to not smoke’ Nicotine is highly addictive much more so than many illegal drugs.
Temporary_31337··on Apple introduces iPad mini built for Apple Intelligence
Why don’t you want to use a bigger iPad? I play, read graphic novels and watch videos on the larger iPad as more screen estate is better.
Temporary_31337··on FreeBSD/EC2 boot performance over time
That suits our deployments where for HA we simply terminate and replace unresponsive EC2 nodes with new ones. I’ll have to talk to other developers to see how much work would it be to compile to freebsd instead of Linux
Temporary_31337··on Show HN: Itineraries.io – I built a joint trip planner in between surgeries
Looks pretty neat but the need to sign up/ log in just to see other itineraries is an unnecessary barrier in my opinion. I haven’t signed up yet as I want to see a sample itinerary first.
Temporary_31337··on Why strength training? A programmer's perspective
Actually that’s a common misconception too - you will not get fit from having a physical job like cleaning you will just be tired. So I really appreciate that I can exercise both the brain at work and muscles at the gym. I see some people in the gym who do physical work or night shifts and it’s much harder for them to manage fatigue immunity and make gains (you need proper rest time to rejuvenate).
Temporary_31337··on Ocean waves grow way beyond known limits
The article does not say what the previously thought max was and what the new height might be. Nazare in Portugal famous for its surfing conditions has waves exceeding 100 meters in height.
Temporary_31337··on Ask HN: What do you use to backup your VMs?
We don’t use mySQL / Maria but I wouldn’t bother backing up OS files every time so you should have a script to boot up a fresh VM instance and restore data at the db level- perhaps use replication if you need fast RTO. This is a fairly solved problem as far as databases are concerned. If you run on AWS or can afford at least 3 nodes running you can even avoid downtime altogether.
Temporary_31337··on Exercise to Strengthen Esophageal Sphincter and Eliminate Gastric Reflux (2022)
I was half expecting something NFSW here.
Temporary_31337··on Why Americans Stopped Moving
Demographics aside, there’s lots of intertwined things mentioned here but the strongest thing is the mortgage. As soon as your house becomes too precious to simply leave behind without thinking much of it, mobility is lost. Cheap housing and the resulting mobility was the key difference between fast growing US and stagnant Europe. Now that advantage is gone and it looks pretty impossible to go back to it.
Temporary_31337··on Iron as an inexpensive storage medium for hydrogen
production and conversion are inefficient compared to other sources of energy, as up to 60 percent of its energy is lost in the process.
Temporary_31337··on Your Immune System Is Not a Muscle
That eventually can be over 100 years sometimes? Can you point to some research about immunity being much stronger acquired early on? For some vaccines boosters are needed anyway.
Temporary_31337··on Lidl's Cloud Gambit: Europe's Shift to Sovereign Computing
Tax credits make sense for companies already with a steady profit margin. Cloud in particular is a capex heavy business so for a new company that is not very useful for at least the first few years.
Temporary_31337··on Condé Nast Signs Deal with OpenAI
Worth pointing out that brown shirts (and matching socks hopefully) were a very far right symbol probably pink or rainbow if you’re going for anti Nazi look
Temporary_31337··on Exposure to the Sun's UV radiation may be good for you
The 6th reason is being smarter than the other two guys.
Temporary_31337··on X ordered to pay €550k to Irish employee fired after yes-or-resign ultimatum
One of the many reasons my current s&p500 company will no longer actively hire in France other than to support specific big sales
Temporary_31337··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
Which of course simply confirms that current elites are just sanctioned criminals that no one dares to challenge.
Temporary_31337··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
Moral of the story- ignore the law for as long as you can and comply hard enough when you have to. It helps to have zirp levels of investment too.
