3x larger in people is not 3x larger in wealth. I think US and China are comparable in that regard. And I dont know if the opportunity going forward is so incredible given China's debt levels and impending population bust.
TearsInTheRain··on NYU is top-ranked in loans that alumni and parents struggle to repay
If you have two people in a system, subsidizing person A and keeping B the same is exactly the same as keeping A the same and taxing person B. Your changing everyone's relative place in society and whats more you are elevating the people that have behaved less responsibly

TearsInTheRain··on Tesla AutoPilot – I give up, it's downright lethal
I think Tesla should definitely be accountable for their software and damage that it causes but involving overly risk adverse regulations will push out self driving cars by a decade, maybe indefinitely.
TearsInTheRain··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
I think some tech health platforms like Capsule will even have a pharmacist call your doctor for a refill for you.

Idk why any politicians arent picking up on foreign price controls as a means of lowering costs in the US. It should be a part of the discussion during any trade talks with Europe.
TearsInTheRain··on John McAfee found dead in Spanish jail after court approves extradition to US
Did you know him personally to be able to make that judgement. To me it sounds like lying on his taxes destroyed his life, or to be more charitable to him, the government destroyed his life
TearsInTheRain··on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Exist; They Must Be Banned
The pentagon literally have lawyers that designate an acceptable amount of civilian casualties a general can risk to take out a given target. With more precise weaponry theyll be able to get under the threshold much more frequently.

> If earning a million dollars is too hard, you can just jet around impoverished countries where the dollar is strong (a legacy of colonialism) while running businesses online.

This is just fundamentally wrong and reeks of blind socialist griping at the whichever current societal structure exists

Maybe in theory but in actuality it is comprised of moneyed interests which is why it needs to be limited to preserve the freedom of the people.

TearsInTheRain··on How I learned to stop worrying and love the lab-leak theory
Imho calling the lab leak theory a conspiracy theory is a form of gas lighting. It is telling people that it isnt legitimate to use basic common sense to question why the bat coronavirus outbreak happened down the street from the lab studying bat coronaviruses. You must deny what is plainly in front of your eyes.
TearsInTheRain··on Tesla has suspended vehicle purchases using Bitcoin
Buying and breaking solar panels still produces a signal for manufacturers to make more solar panels. Buying and breaking the most performant solar panels will produce a signal and selective pressure to create more performant solar panels. It doesnt matter what the demand is for as long as it isnt going away and is selecting for a given outcome.

Bitcoin should still reduce energy consumption but in the short term it can still have a positive effect on renewable investment.

TearsInTheRain··on Doctors investigate mystery brain disease in Canada
Maybe this is a naive question, but your immune system works by identifying foreign proteins and killing those cells. Is there no way for your immune system to target cells contaminated with prions?
TearsInTheRain··on Changes at Basecamp
I think we are at about 10% right now in a department of a bit less than 100 engineers. A quick google search shows the industry is at 25%. I would be curious to know what the current graduating classes of engineers is at. My guess would be 30%? Requiring our recruiters to hit 40% means more work for fewer candidates for a marginal benefit for our company.

To be fair I would expect more female engineers to show a benefit in the retention rates of female engineers so I think this initiative could be net positive for the company but I also doubt the people pushing for this are being data driven.
