Tarsul··on The fall of Labubus and the mush of modern internet trends
Don't do it for the world. Do it for your own clear conscience. That way you can always say to yourself: At least I did my part (even though it's clear everyone can do more, but perfectionism doesn't help either. Personally I am content if my climate impact is better than 70-80% of my cohort.).
Tarsul··on Dark Mode Sucks
Yes! I use "Dark Background and Light Text" addon for firefox, where you can set the colors yourself, which I did. I use #FFF2cc (I'd like to call it sandy) as my background color for nearly every website (even HN). (+permanent night mode, +blue light glasses that are orange-tinted, so your mileage may vary)
Tarsul··on Hyundai wants its EVs to charge as fast as petrol cars refuel
i think in some countries residents can make their own charging station public (and earn some money with it). This should be probed in more countries.
Tarsul··on When Bill Gates Yelled at Me About Climate Change
But the crazy part is that on a spectrum from far left to far right, the far left was never more correct than on climate change. By which I mean it truly is catastrophic/worldchanging or in a little more words: the worst legacy a generation ever left behind for future generations. And why? Because we are addicted to fossil fuels. Climate change happens more because of wants [of the rich world] than because of needs [of everyone]. We burn our future for our current desires.
Tarsul··on Record Numbers of Younger Women Want to Leave the U.S.
guys, it really was worth looking at the article: the number is 40% of women ages 15-44 would love to leave US if good opportunity came along. That's insane. But then again, the political situation in the US is insane, too.
Tarsul··on Ok Billionaire: Why Do the Opinions of 600 Americans Get So Much Airtime? (2019)
It's weird to me as a German because growing up in the 90s exorbitant wealth was not seen as inherently good, if i had to guesstimate the general feeling - it was generally seen as inherently a-little-bit-worse-than-neutral (the saying "Reichtum stinkt" - meaning rich people stink, was quite common). However, and probably due to way too much cultural influence of US media (and tech) this general feeling changed a little bit more to the positive side (00s/2010s). But now that everything goes to shit, the feeling shifts again to more negative.

At least that's my nonscientific interpretation of the historical feeling in Germany since the 90s. But would love studies about it, in general.

Tarsul··on Sued by Nintendo
Pokemon did not have breeding in the first few games. (but yeah, every artist/designer is influenced by everything)
Tarsul··on I analyzed 180M jobs to see what jobs AI is replacing today
if everything goes down 8%, the one that loses only 0,35% is a relative winner.
Tarsul··on Meta readies $25B bond sale as soaring AI costs trigger stock sell-off
yeah but what's it worth if our riches in 2025 are lent from the future with no way to pay back? That's climate change.
Tarsul··on Nutella maker in hazelnut stand-off with Turkish dealers
there was a big controversy in Germany that Nutella changed its recipe round about the time you are saying. I noticed myself that Nutella tasted worse (and thus quit eating it). You could see on the ingredients list that the order changed, and since the ordering is always from highest amount to lowest amount it was clear that the recipe changed (I think sugar was on spot 1 aftewards but not before? Not sure). You could probably find articles about it...
Tarsul··on AOL to be sold to Bending Spoons for $1.5B
I noticed that, too. If one only had the wikipedia article to go on, it would appear that they made way too much money with the covid app for Italy. Which is probably true, but probably not billions?! So, after reading another article[1] (which does not really give strong pointers but leads to) my conclusion would be that they simply somehow became a darling for investors and could finance all these big acquisitions.

Tarsul··on My users say they'd cry if my app disappeared. None of them pay
(after rereading I don't have any new points but I will let my comment stay for posterity) If so many people leave your free app, consider why they leave instead of focusing on 20 people who stay (how much money could you even make with 20 people? Not enough.). Only then you can focus on monetization. Anyway, best of luck and grats for getting so many downloads (albeit not enough sticky ones).
Tarsul··on My gf thinks videogames cannot be art. What to show her?
Very good. Since she likes art/paintings, I could suggest Behind The Frame: The Finest Scenery. It has a great narrative and doesn't take too long (2h). Not sure if I would put it in the top3 but thats your decision anyway. Good luck. South of The Circle is another narrative game which left me pondering. I think thats the perfect genre for her anyway, whether she uses the word art or not ;)

PS: Please post the result of the competition :D

Tarsul··on My gf thinks videogames cannot be art. What to show her?
If I had to pick just one it would be Gorogoa. Just look at it, it plays even better.

Tarsul··on I developed NBA players for a decade. This new training method can help anyone
I think the best way to develop general basketball skills (dribbling, passing) is to play point guard. We've seen the incredible growth of Harden, Giannis etc. when they started playing point guard. I can also speak from personal experience that this was decisive. For basketball starters my suggestion is to use your weak hand for dribbling in warm-ups as much as possible.

To my shame I don't have any good tips for making baskets.

Tarsul··on Santos Is Released After Trump Commutes His Sentence
Swamp the drain.
Tarsul··on Quantification of fibrinaloid clots in plasma from pediatric Long COVID patients
This is (probably) not a Long Covid story but I found that bloodletting (for which I even received money!) gave me back the energy that I was missing for the last few years (e.g. it was impossible to build stamina). I also read about a study about the positive effects of bloodletting[1] that somehow is not all the rage in mainstream news, which I find perplexing. If it might be so easy to improve your health (for some of us), why isn't this discussed or studied more broadly?

[1]https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/05/120529211645.h...

"the patients who gave blood had a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (from 148 mmHg to 130 mmHg) as well as reduction in blood glucose levels and heart rate, and an improvement in cholesterol levels (LDL/HDL ratio)."

Tarsul··on Dark patterns: Buying a Bahncard at Deutsche Bahn
Oh, actually it started with incompetence, too: I wanted to order the BahnCard25 but payment didn't went through (and thus, I did not finish the order process). When I tried again, the coupon that I wanted to use for the Bahncard25 was exhausted. (which is why I went for BahnCard50 afterwards)

And why did I cancel the subscription anyway? Because the trip that I planned (Hamburg to Paris) and that was listed as buyable was of course everything but buyable. Always failed at the last step of ordering with some indistinct error message. Well, they really did not want my money, that much I can say.

Tarsul··on Dark patterns: Buying a Bahncard at Deutsche Bahn
I actually made money accidentally with a BahnCard subscription. I canceled my BahnCard 50 within the first 14 days (which they have to conform to due to laws) via email (btw: before the starting date so I did not use it). They confirmed and send me back 100Euros too much money. Why 100Euro? I had originally used a coupon code that saved me 100Euro. Good guy as I am I told them via mail that they sent me too much money back. What did they say? No, can't be, Bahncard50 costs are the higher amount, the banking statement that I sent them must be of something else.

I was like... alright, no sense in arguing with them anymore.

Tarsul··on Without data centers, GDP growth was 0.1% in the first half of 2025
I think this year the population actually goes down. So per capita GDP growth is even bigger than 0,1%!
Tarsul··on Imgur pulls out of UK as data watchdog threatens fine
I think to understand Starmer is to understand that he comes from a public prosecutors position and he still thinks like it. Which is why everything that screens "justice" is highest on his agenda, this means that privacy-invading things are justified if law & order can catch more perpetrators. Also explains why he is totally helpless wrt the economy (not his forte).
Tarsul··on U.S. investors, Trump close in on TikTok deal with China
so US users will be cut off from the rest of the world? Wow. Thats crazy.
Tarsul··on 95% of AI Pilots Fail
Umm, was your management really willing to spend ~500USD/month/dev (if you hadnt intervened)?? Thats insane. Most companies spend way less (I hope) for AI (even regular IT companies, like where I work). Though I do believe big tech is the craziest, burning all that money for data centers and making it look like sustainable investments on their balance sheets (which they are not).
Tarsul··on AI might yet follow the path of previous technological revolutions
social media ruined our brains long before LLMs. Not sure if the LLM-upgrade is is all that newsworthy... Well, for AI fake videos maybe - but it could also be that soon no one believes any video they see online which would have the adverse effect and could arguably even be considered good in our current times (difficult question!).
Tarsul··on Americans face biggest increase in health insurance costs in 15 years
If there's one "positive" in the labor stats the past few months it was an increase in employees in healthcare positions.
Tarsul··on simonw has vibe-coded 124 useful tools
I just checked his Hacker News Multi-Term Histogram[0] and I like it! E.g. if you compare Python to Java from 2015 on, you can clearly see that Java was up front in 2015 and since about 2023 Python is winning (although by less than I imagined). There are probably quite a few terms that might be interesting. [0]https://tools.simonwillison.net/hacker-news-histogram
Tarsul··on Diablo Game Developers Join Communications Workers of America
They are not underpaid in Germany (I'd guess top 20-30% of German income) and probably other European countries.
Tarsul··on German Economist fined €16,100 for sarcastic X posts

"The center noted that the change in the data could be due to a declining survey response rate among immigrants."
Tarsul··on Guédelon Castle
theres a great documentary (or 2) about it, which coincidentally is online for every German and French via arte (but only today but will probably be available again in a few months):
