Tankenstein··on Memory safe ‘curl’ for a more secure internet
I remember from very old PHP days that the default http client everyone reached for in PHP land was curl: https://www.php.net/manual/en/book.curl.php . I don't doubt that this is the case for many other older languages as well. This means, in turn, that there are large swathes of the internet communicating with one another via methods like this.
Tankenstein··on Calibre 5.0
Wow, I didn't realise it's the same guy. Kitty truly is a terrific piece of software, and it seems Kovid is also a terrific product engineer.
Tankenstein··on Zoom needs to clean up its privacy act
In my experience it has better reliability and quality, to the point where I haven't had to worry about it.
Tankenstein··on Visa Buys Plaid
It's only working for large, existing players, is his point. For me wanting to build automatic syncing to my budget tools, I'm still out of luck. They don't even let you access your own data.
Tankenstein··on Show HN: Advent of Code in a different language every day
Am doing the same thing, but am quite behind. Planning to use my vacation to make up for it. https://uku.dev/
Tankenstein··on P-99: Ninety-Nine Prolog Problems
Amazing, am doing the same, also chose prolog for day 4. Ended up with quite different code though: https://uku.dev/posts/advent-of-languages-day-4-prolog
Tankenstein··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
I really recommend rebinding caps lock to escape. macOS lets you do that natively in keyboard setting nowadays. Still muscle memory to relearn, of course.
Tankenstein··on Free Public Transport in Estonia
The small <-> agile thing is very real. I've seen it take very little time (2-5y after conception) for big ideas to be implemented in reality, countrywide, whereas doing it somewhere like the US would be next to impossible.
Tankenstein··on Show HN: WildDuck – Self-hosted modern email server
I get that this is a meme, but v8 is one of the most battle-hardened runtimes out there, plus you don't manage your own memory or concurrency primitives, which are the sources of most security issues.
Tankenstein··on In Estonian parliamentary election, 44% of the votes were cast online
> there will be few-to-none signs of subversion

One thing the Estonian system does is that you can verify your vote on a mobile device by scanning a qr code that you see when you cast the digital vote. A vote can be checked after i-voting for up to three times during half an hour.

I imagine if any mismatch was detected the country would shut off i-voting immediately.

Tankenstein··on In Estonian parliamentary election, 44% of the votes were cast online
This is actually what is done, you can download a phone app for iOS or Android, where you can scan a QR code you see when you vote to verify your vote. A vote can be checked after i-voting for up to three times during half an hour.

Tankenstein··on Linus Torvalds apologizes for his behavior, takes time off
This is actually great news. Shows that one of the most important leaders in tech is actually capable of introspection , admitting fault and changing their ways, even after many years, without a massive public scandal.

Massive kudos, Linus. I don't think this was easy.

Tankenstein··on Show HN: Buzzngo.io – Real-time public polls using RethinkDB
Cool project and am glad to see RethinkDB getting some love, a couple questions, specifically about the hardware, came to mind:

Do you order the hardware and then place it wherever you like, or do you guys set it up?

How does shipping it work?

What is it underneath: Raspberry Pi + custom stuff (batteries etc)?

Will you be offering fancier machines later on, as in a machine that lets you input text?

Thanks for posting, i might well have use for this some day.

Tankenstein··on Show HN: Sapper.js – towards a better web app framework
As far as i know, even though it was the hype at the time, angular 1's traction was not quite that of react's. All of the FB family (messenger, instagram, fb etc), including the apps are on it. AirBnB is on it (including the apps), Uber's on it, etc. That kind of business gives me peace of mind. Angular 1 wasn't used in large google apps, as far as i know most of them are still gwt.
Tankenstein··on Show HN: Sapper.js – towards a better web app framework
As always, my main concern with this is traction. Will this be well supported, with a good community, 4 years down the line? I know React will, just because of the massive amounts of business depending on it. When building something real, i have to think about this because i need to be able to hire developers and actually develop my product instead of rewriting it.

That aside, the idea of svelte is cool, and i'm happy they're continuing to build on that. Excited to see what comes out of this!

Tankenstein··on Show HN: Fenêtre – Picture-in-picture for your mac
Quite a cool product, and i'd like to commend you on your landing page. Looks cool and conveys all the information i'm looking for.
Tankenstein··on [dead]
This doesn't seem terribly constructive.
Tankenstein··on Typing Practice for Programmers
I wouldn't say it is. For the past couple of years i've been using heavy IDEs (jetbrains stuff) for very verbose languages like java, and lightweight ones for more concise languages like js or haskell. Learning multiple IDE-s can sound stupid, but i feel that it helps me a lot.
Tankenstein··on Startpage – private search engine
If they're hitting google apis, they must be paying obscene amounts of money, right?
Tankenstein··on Ask HN: Where is AI/ML actually adding value at your company?
Lots of KYC things, like fraud, AML and CTF. Helps with finding new patterns.
Tankenstein··on Overview of JavaScript ES6 features
There's no need unless you need runtime-only concepts, like new string methods. Use https://babeljs.io/ to turn nice es6 into es5. (I imagine you already know this, if you're using react/jsx)
Tankenstein··on Overview of JavaScript ES6 features
For anyone who wants to use ES6 in production, https://babeljs.io/ is amazing.
Tankenstein··on Overview of JavaScript ES6 features
Common misconception, const only disallows reassignment. For instance,

const number = 1337;

number = 10; // fails

But objects/arrays are not immutable in js, so you can do this:

const person = { name: 'Dude' };

person.name = 'Dudette';

Which is perfectly valid. If you want full immutability, i recommend you check out https://facebook.github.io/immutable-js/, been running it in production, a real pleasure to work with.

Tankenstein··on Ask HN: What are the most promising/interesting new programming languages?
I Would say Elixir is a big up-and-comer. The BEAM VM is really a marvellous piece of engineering, and now that there's a language that looks nice and feels nice (no offense erlang) i think a LOT of people will be looking that way. Especially since nowadays people are getting more into websockets and realtime communication, elixir is perfect for this.
Tankenstein··on Why Elixir
I've been learning elixir for a bit now, and it's actually as awesome as people say. In more functional languages like Haskell, i feel like i am not as productive (mostly because i still don't quite understand it yet). In elixir, it feels like i'm building javascript or python, just in a more functional way. Seriously, give it a shot guys.
Tankenstein··on React/JavaScript fatigue
Because just bash would be insane to get the features of something like webpack or gulp.
Tankenstein··on React/JavaScript fatigue
He is referring to the fact that his language of choice, es6, will be running natively in chrome, since it's just new javascript.
Tankenstein··on Astronaut Selection
Uhh, no, it doesn't: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Climate_Orbiter?oldformat...
Tankenstein··on E-Residency in Estonia, Part I
Signing anything in Estonia (at least in tech, where i work), is always done digitally.
