SudarshanP··on Is Google's Cash Pile a Sign of the End of Technological Progress?
What Theil seems to be saying is that Google seems to have no clue with what to do with 50 billion in the bank. Can Google just hire a lot more programmers and give them something to work on? Can they just gobble up a lot of startups and with the cash horde turn them hugely profitable. At least from what Schmidt says in the interview, it looks like there is no easy answer to the question of what to do with the money. I guess even companies like Apple will have this problem. Lots of money, no idea what to do with it. Even things like self driving cars and google glass are really peanuts in terms of investments when it comes to googles finances.

Things like Space, energy seem too risky and biotech, medicine etc. seem to be too regulated. While I have no idea who is right or wrong, I was certainly surprised that Schmidt did not dismiss Thiel's comment about not having a clue about what to do with the cash.

I am not an economist, but I feel scared when the wealthiest people have no idea how to rapidly grow the money they have gathered. Coz they own most of it... and if all they can do is slosh it around from account to account and not directing it towards making employees/machines produce "stuff that matters", we will rather stagnate quickly. Once the developing countries catch upto the west and we automate whatever we can easily automate, the whole world will be left with stagnant economies. A whole planet with nothing much to do apart from fighting over depleting resources.

I desperately want google to be able to spend that cash heap on making something people want. Something that will give it a good profit so that it keep this going on until it remains competitive. Else I want capitalism off the face of this planet. I hate to live in a world where money keeps leaking out of my pocket in mysterious ways and the guys who get it from me, stop doing anything that will indirectly improve my life.

And please do not buy 50 Instagrams with that cash horde :(. Open question to the hackers over here... If you were chairman of Google what would do with 50 billion dollars to create maximum new wealth(http://paulgraham.com/wealth.html)?

SudarshanP··on Flow-Based Programming for Node.js
Are yahoo pipes flow based programs? Are there fundamental differences in the way the piping happens in noflo and other flow based languages?

Then we have ROS... XSLT pipelines and so on. There is something really beautiful about looking at your code as plumbing :)

SudarshanP··on Isla, a programming language for young children
hackers learn by tinkering :). I'd personally learn as little as possible in a way suggested by the paper. I'll do it even if it takes 3x longer, because for me it is more fun to learn by tinkering. I'll learn the deep stuff after I get my feet wet. The real question is what fraction of the class has the patience to soak in the abstraction for years together so that they can apply it once they have have become experts.

I've also encountered people who prefer abstraction over concreteness and it works for them. So the best is for each student to learn according to his preferred style. I hope courses like udacity and coursera slowly evolve into something where each student learns by his/her preferred method.

SudarshanP··on Wiki inventor Ward Cunningham develops federated wiki
Since we have free accounts on app engine, heroku etc... and even gdrive or dropbox and so on... wont it be easy for someone to write a simple web app or ipad app or something like that allows the masses to run their own wiki's without being technically sophisticated. To an end user the process could be as easy as install app from chrome webstore... specify some minimal data... and you have an app engine account hosting your tiny wiki. If tomorrow you choose to move it heroku, it would as simple as a button click and registering on heroku.
SudarshanP··on Programming Language Rankings: February 2012
On the top right the scripting languages() seem to be below the diagonal and the compiled languages above the diagonal. Maybe it is just co-incidental :).

I have suggestion for another chart someone may be interested in creating. A time series of such images. It would be even more awesome if the traces all the movements are depicted in a single image like a snake.

SudarshanP··on First look at India's 2nd-generation, USD $40 tablet
Unfortunately these guys are just hacking together a supplychain. So this will be very different from something like PSLV :(. They are not really doing any "innovation". If they can at least keep corruption at bay, these tablets will just increase the total number of tablets in use in India, especially among a set of people who may not choose to buy the tablets for themselves. That is good thing n the long run.
SudarshanP··on To Elon Musk and the Model S: Congratulations
"I just cannot see how spaceflight could be more important for humanity in the next, say, half-century than transportation."... 50 to 60 years is the difference between 1904 and 1956. Do you really think your models of what space "exploration is" in 2012 will be the same in 2062?? In 2062 probably no one will commute to work. All transportation may be purely for socializing personally and travel or adventure. 2062 is so far away that even futurists consider it beyond their comfort zone of dreaming up stuff. How are you so sure of Mankind's priorities in another 50 years?
SudarshanP··on To Elon Musk and the Model S: Congratulations
Cheap Space Exploration is like planes or ships were for various generations in the past. It is hard for a man in the old stone age to think of the value of the ships or planes. They look like pointless "advanced technology" to go to places that do not matter. But then time passes and we figure out things like carts, trains, ships, planes and space elevators or solar sails or ion engines are just an obvious part of our economies.
SudarshanP··on The "Everyone gets the source code, donations get you binaries" software model
Another possible variant is: Paid users get the newest version + support + immediate patches/bugfixes. Everyone else gets it with an n month delay + GPLed source code + binaries.
SudarshanP··on Web Components Github Org
This may superficially look like yet another standard but is highly likely to be much better "Let us set up yet another committee to cook up yet another standard".

The Google I/O talk mentioned on the other thread explains how we can separate out the semantics from the implementation and let components from different providers inter operate. I feel things like Shadow DOM will give real encapsulation for the first time in web development. As of now we either use Iframes or try(through self descipline) not to cause damage when mix components from different sources.

SudarshanP··on Being Useful
SpaceX, Self driving cars, Craig venter's synthesis of an entire genome, growing organs, willow garage,3d printing, udacity, coursera, edX... the list goes on... things are not too bad. But only the bold will choose the hard paths. The rest will clone successful startups.
SudarshanP··on Knowledge of fractions and long division predicts long-term math success
People who derailed in 5th grade are probably unlikely to get back on track because education in the higher classes stands on the shoulders of the previous classes.

If it not a causation, this may also mean that "non motivated students" never care about math. Either in 5th grade or in high school or later.

Or maybe it is a combination of both. The article only shows correlation. But how can one study causation without destroying the futures of students?

SudarshanP··on Why philosophy is largely ignored by science
There is a lot of extra rigor in a random controlled study than an observational study because it is harder to "cook up data" to support the scientists own beliefs. This may even happen unconsciously.
SudarshanP··on Biologists grow human-eye precursor from stem cells

SudarshanP··on THN Magazine Stole Our Code and Design

SudarshanP··on DragonBox: Algebra beats Angry birds
This is not a solution for those don't want to think. But many who would gladly think if they cared will now find the transition to algebraic symbol manipulation lot less painful. Kids have their own set of "wants"... In most situations they have no clue how math is a path to satisfy such a want.

I once came across a thread on the scratch website where a student was saying he wanted to figure out how to use trig functions because the guys using trig functions wrote much better games. He(she) was complaining that all the explanations on the web made no sense to him(her). These kinds of tools together can ease the path for those who want to think, but never end up paying enough attention to math due to unnecessary hurdles that prevent exposure to deeper ideas. It is not a silver bullet, but definitely a nice tool in the hands of a teacher who wants to stimulate thinking and a student who wants to think.

SudarshanP··on I am a developer, yet I outsource the development of my startup
This guy is dogfooding outsourcing. He is outsourcing Taskarmy.com which is related to outsourcing itself. So on the one hand it is an awesome exercise... On the other, he is saying "nice things" about a concept he needs to "sell".

But as he himself says, certain things are hard to outsource. For Example the particular blog post itself. Outsourcing the webdesign and the code behind the site would have been a lot more easier. So in a strange sense, even a skeptic has to agree with his point... A site like Taskarmy can fail due to bad technology but will not succeed due to its technical prowess. What he needs to figure out is how to connect the buyers and the sellers and make them stick around. All the CRUD that goes into his site will not be the secret sauce. The only possible real secret sauce is probably a method to connect the buyers and sellers using an algorithm that beats the competition heads down. In such a case it makes sense for him to keep the "secret sauce" to himself. Everything else is a commodity until he becomes a huge player. If one is at twitter scale, even status messages become "rocket science" and cannot be outsourced.

SudarshanP··on Work on unimportant problems
"My most important advice here is stark and politically very incorrect: Don't give too much weight to the social importance of the issue; instead, do what captures your intellectual interest and creative imagination. This is not to deny the importance of paying attention to the real world. Nor is it to say that abstract theory is necessarily more valuable than applied work. Nothing could be farther from the truth. But I do believe that mere relevance of an issue will not guarantee good research unless you have a genuine drive to work on it. If not, leave it to someone else. Good work on an apparently unimportant problem will have more long-run value than mediocre work on one of greater intrinsic importance. And one's judgment of importance can always be wrong; concepts of relevance can change over time." - Feynman
SudarshanP··on A 1956 encyclopaedia's view on the computer
Unfortunately, people who have not experienced the joy of how well models work, have no clue how important they are. The GP may assume that "Advanced Technology" can get you to wherever you want. For Eg. he may look at a rocket engine and assume that you just need to start a powerful engine and keep steering your way to your destination as you would do in a car. He knows it is more complex that, but will probably never appreciate the fact that, if Newton's laws of motion or gravitation were off even by a small margin, we would never have achieved what we would have achieved. I hope more and more people realize that science and technology is more than just advanced or complicated.
