StuntPope··on Scientists recreated classic origin-of-life experiment and made a new discovery
Only problem is that the Miller Urey experiment never told us anything about the origin of life.

Inorganic to organic compounds, sure. But nobody has ever been able to get from there to cells and DNA.

StuntPope··on We Are Beast Machines
Another materialist who has it exactly backwards.

Consciousness is not an epiphenomenon of the brain. It is the base layer of reality.

StuntPope··on Anil Seth Finds Consciousness in Life’s Push Against Entropy
This is very simple: consciousness is not an epiphenomenon of the brain. It's a universal force. We don't emit consciousness, we tap into it and experience it as individuations.

This why AI will never happen in the generalized sense. Because as long as we keep thinking we can engineer a mind out of matter, we'll keep chasing our tails.

Matter is a by-product of the universal mind. And we all experience our lives as singular nodes of that mind.

This has been known for millennia and is the basis for the world religions (which are mostly dumbed down co-optings of this).

Also, Bitcoin fixes this.

StuntPope··on Tools for Thinking
Joplin is a nice find. I used to use WikiPad religiously until it seemed to go defunct.

I like the idea of Kinopio a lot because I use mindmaps heavily but find the hierarchical structure to be a limitation, this seems more lateral. Only problem is it's hosted, would love something like this in an app, like the aforementioned Joplin.

StuntPope··on Purism is seeking investment from individuals
I'm still waiting for my Librem phone that I pre-ordered and paid for, over four years ago.

So, no, I think I'll pass.

StuntPope··on Do Cryptocurrencies Provide ANY() Real-Economic Value at All?
> And for the foreseeable future, governments have complete control over that

Actually.... governments are demonstrably losing control over that.

Governments worldwide are in process of destroying their currencies.

CBDBs will be social credit mechanisms of control.

Cryptos protect you from government. This year's run is because institutions are figuring out that bonds are dead and fiats are headed for hyperinflation, and CBDBs will be constructed in a way to preclude savings and capital formation.

StuntPope··on EasyDNS is now accepting Dogecoin for payments
Don't use Bitpay, they use some proprietary method that makes it impossible to use from most crypto wallets and I think they just settle into fiat so you can't HODL (could be wrong on the latter point, but not the former).

BTCPayserver.org is an open source stack that any reasonably technical team can use.

StuntPope··on McDonald's, Other CEOs Tell Investors $15 Minimum Wage Won't Hurt Business
...because they will simply use more automation.

The kiosk manufacturers probably have lobbyists all over the place pushing for higher minimum wages all the time.

StuntPope··on My DNS Was Stolen
Obvious phish. That would never have even made it past our prescreening algos and if it did it would have thrown a flag and the next person to look at would have nuked it and closed your account.

File under "so don't do that, then".

StuntPope··on Sky Global CEO indicted over encrypted chat drug trafficking
This is my take on it reading between the lines:

That former high-level distributor was selling boatloads of these things into the criminal underworld, and the DoJ is alleging that the CEO knew about it and didn't stop it.

StuntPope··on Assessing Mandatory Lockdowns and Business Closure Effects on Spread of Covid-19
Translation: I offer my opinion on something I literally and admittedly avoided reading.
StuntPope··on Turns out half the internet has a single-point-of-failure called “Cloudflare”
easyDNS has to be the registrar because only your registrar can change your nameserver delegation with the registry. This is, in essence, the registrar's job. To maintain your domain record and info, including nameserver delegation, with the registry.

You could do it with BGP, but it is non-trivial and you need your own ASN to do that.

I think you cared to have an open mind about it, you would find that in practice, libertarians will step up and help those in need just as much any anybody else would. The extent to which people will do so is more dependent on their own moral compass and ability to help others than by their political ideology.

What libertarians are against is coercion and force. They don't want to be forced to do what somebody else thinks is morally proper, in most cases for yet another person. That way lies tyranny.

The concept of selfishness in the libertarian sense is "put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others".

Most libertarians are pretty generous givers in terms of both charity, emotional support, helping hands and community. They just dislike having a gun to their heads to be that way.

I would say classical liberalism of yore is closer to libertarianism today.

The big difference is positive versus negative rights. Libertarians and classical liberals believe in the latter (the right to be left alone, to live your life as you please, to marry who you want, to be gay, to be straight, etc)

Liberalism today, is all about positive rights, entitlements.

But the objection libertarians have against positive rights is that a) the state itself produces nothing, so b) everything the state gives to somebody has to be taken away from somebody else.

It gets more pernicious today in that "Conservative" and "Liberal" as delineated by the 2-party system in the US is perceived to be largely farcical bickering over very narrowly constrained policy tracks. Both parties are pro-war, anti-civil liberties, Big Government oligarchs.

Hope this helps.

I would say that calling libertarianism an extremist ideology is a gross misunderstanding of it. My guess is everything you think you know about libertarianism, was what you were told by somebody who hates it.

Full-on anarchism, or anarcho-capitalism, ok, that's a hard sell.

Libertarianism? It's basically "never initiate aggression" and "live and let live". That's about it. I don't know what's extreme about that.

Well said. Let's not forget Ignaz Semmelweiss, who make the outlandish claim that surgical and childbirth mortalities would decrease if surgeons washed their hands between procedures.

The reason why was because he declared there existed something called "bacteria", invisible to the eye, which was infecting patients and killing them.

He was ridiculed (#fakenews!), stripped of his professional degrees, LOCKED IN AN INSANE ASYLUM and eventually, beaten to death by guards.

Well, turned out, ole Semmelweiss was onto something. Who knew?

Berenson isn't a libertarian, the guy who wrote the article (me), is. And I grapple with the dissonance between free market libertarian principles and big tech "take-it-or-leave-it" control over discourse all the time.

As Voltaire says... "uncertainty is an uncomfortable position, but certainty is an absurd one".

Every ideology has these complicated areas within them and you're either aware of them and grapple with it or you ignore them and go full dogmatic.

There is a really good podcast out yesterday with Bill Fleckenstein on QuothTheRaven, and he talked about exactly this:

The idea disagreeing with official discourse is somehow "political". It shouldn't be. But everything is so polarized lately that disagreeing with the methodologies for collating case fatalities, for example, or worrying about the second-order effects of the lockdowns, suddenly that makes you "Pro-Trump", or if you agree with all of the above then you're a progressive. It's insane.

I blame the mainstream media for most of that dynamic. Can't we have a simple pandemic without the entire thing becoming a political football?

Thanks for the context.

My writing focus has been on big tech, censorship, deplatforming and related topics and the last 4 or 5 articles I've posted here were flagged despite being heavily upvoted and making the front page.

I can see people flagging it if it nobody comments, nobody upvotes it and it's clear nobody is interested or finds it germane. Ok.

But it always seemed as if people were using the flag function as a "downvote". They don't like the message or the ramifications of the article so they flag it.

It really is ridiculous.

You can disagree with something without deeming it inappropriate and deciding on behalf of everybody else that they shouldn't even get the chance to form their own opinion on it.

The way I see it, if an article didn't address a topic relevant to HN, then it wouldn't rise. It's that simple.

How do you know that the book in question was putting up misinformation on a bad faith basis?

You don't, and you won't, because the decision has been made for you.

You honestly think there is no legitimate information to be added to the equation from outside official sources? And that official sources, are, by definition right about everything?

StuntPope··on Twitter's community verification system will be a disaster
How is taking a person who describes himself as "us hebephiles" a huge leap? Either people say what they mean or they don't.

If they don't, then you also have to give a pass to every conservative off-hand remark that got their career derailed.

StuntPope··on Twitter's community verification system will be a disaster
Actually, no, that is not clear at all. What is clear is that Ryan Broderick demonstrated ideation of a sexual nature with underage children on multiple posts.

There were numerous other items from his tumblr and instagram which make it clear broderick was not being satirical.

See the screengrabs captured here

OR here

But it looks like you're willing to give a lefty a pass on behaviour that would be career ending from a conservative, which is par for the course.

Thanks - going to have that looked at. Wrt whether we are subject to German law, we have written about this at length in the past. Our position is absent a treaty codifies reciprocity, it is impossible for an ISP to comply with various and sundry foreign jurisdiction laws.

We comply with the laws of the country in which we are domiciled, which is Canada.
