StriverGuy··on Ask HN: How to move into engineering management?
Curious where you get that statistic from? I would hesitate to trust a 28 year old engineering manager in most circumstances short of being an extreme outlier in terms of abilities and career. At 28 that would mean they have around 6 (at best) years experience assuming they have just a bachelors level education.
StriverGuy··on AWS, MongoDB, and the Economic Realities of Open Source
Arguable this is what MongoDB, Inc. sells as well. A big part of their package for enterprise clients is optimization and consulting services.

StriverGuy··on Ask HN: What to do after $8M (all cash, post tax) exit?
a million dollars will barely buy you an average home in NYC - unless of course you call a 700sft 1 bedroom average.

StriverGuy··on Bloomberg stands by Chinese chip story as Apple, Amazon ratchet up denials
Yes - finding the servers in question from the correct lots.
StriverGuy··on What Businessweek got wrong about Apple
Why do you so blindly believe amzn/aapl over bloomberg? You do realize that reputation is a huge part of success, particularly in the security and hardware space. Of course amazon and apple will deny this story. For starters, they are probably under a gag order from the government to not leak anything regarding their findings since the investigation is still ongoing. Secondly, it is of no benefit to admit they failed in oversite on their side with this one.
StriverGuy··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of all of your productivity tools?
This seems more a way to organize a personal Wiki. I am concerned with day to day management of personal ToDo's/tasks/reminders etc.
StriverGuy··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of all of your productivity tools?
Looks interesting. Curious how the feedback has been on this app? Reminds me of tacoapp.com (not sure if its maintained anymore)
StriverGuy··on Ask HN: What infrastructure would you use to host an open, free JSON-based API?
Heroku is the easiest set up imo
StriverGuy··on On Dollar Slices, Pizza Vectors, Prosciutto Zones and Topping Hyperspace
You may have invented it, but NYC perfected it.
StriverGuy··on Ask HN: What are some APIs you wish existed?
For banking check out https://plaid.com/

Anyone have a link without a paywall?
StriverGuy··on Reddit Security Incident
This is not common knowledge among non-technical people. In fact, many non-technical people don't even know what 2FA is.

Additionally, it can take some time to change security standards in a large company. Most companies that are not in high compliance environments focus their engineering efforts on features.

StriverGuy··on Ask HN: React Native is dead, how you would build mobile app nowadays?
This feels like a troll.
StriverGuy··on How do you invest your disposable income as a tech worker?
I agree with the sentiment but you have to be careful about just assuming assets that are uncorrelated will remain uncorrelated in a black swan event. Additionally, you have to assume that your hedge is liquid enough that it can be rolled off in times of need.
StriverGuy··on How do you invest your disposable income as a tech worker?
dollar cost averaging does not in reality mitigate the volatility risk...

Consider the scenario where you are invested in 100% indexes and get hit by some black swan event resulting in >70% drawdown. Odds are that you will lose your job during such an event and therefore could not feasibly continue investing at the same pace (there goes DCA as risk-neutralizing strategy). The more likely occurrence in this scenario is that you actually NEED your invested cash to stay in illiquid assets (i.e. house, college tuition etc) and are forced to draw out money at the bottom of the market.

Index investing without any hedging for fat tails doesn't seem that smart.

StriverGuy··on How do you invest your disposable income as a tech worker?
Seems to be a lot of indexers here. I am always curious if/how people plan for the volatility risk (and implied personal financial risk when vol spikes) from being purely indexed in their portfolios...

We are a seed stage startup looking for a Senior Software Engineer with production-grade modern web experience (some mobile would help too!). Our tech stack is Javascript centric (ES6/React/React-Native/NodeJS/Express) and is all hosted in AWS. We love DevOps (CircleCI, ElasticBeanstalk) and hope you do too! Our team is small so you will be able to have a large influence over architecture and design.

Perks to working with us at Kard (besides working with our awesome team, of course):

StriverGuy··on Antibiotics in Meat Could Be Damaging Our Guts
I would reword plant-based to be plant-centric. Vegan/Vegetarian diets have many many issues (xenoestrogen, B12 deficiency, reduced sex hormone levels just to name a few) and are not a normal consumption pattern for genetic omnivores like us humans.
StriverGuy··on Ask HN: Any Tip ( without side effects ) for healthy life?
Toxic baggage...I get the feeling you haven't spent much time reading into the actual science of omnivore diets.
StriverGuy··on Ask HN: Any Tip ( without side effects ) for healthy life?
Veganism is not by definition healthy.

Eating meat is not by definition unhealthy.

Dietary cholesterol is not directly linked to blood levels of cholesterol. Most recent science suggest high carbohydrate consumption (typically in a vegan diet) is heavily linked to high cholesterol.

StriverGuy··on Ask HN: I want to start a new company, but I'm CEO at a funded startup
Find someone competent to execute your other business plan and provide them a seed investment and take a percentage. Join the board and get involved if your current venture fails/exits.
StriverGuy··on Stock Markets Tumble Amid Worries Over Tech Firms and Trade Tensions
What are you basing this off of?
StriverGuy··on Ask HN: What are good writing tips for software developers?
I have not. I'll have to check it out.
StriverGuy··on Ask HN: What are good writing tips for software developers?
I recommend getting three books and to begin writing at least 500 words per day distraction free (technical, fiction, stream of conscious):

1) On Writing Well - William Zinser https://www.amazon.com/Writing-Well-30th-Anniversary-Nonfict...

2) On Writing - Stephen King- https://www.amazon.com/Writing-10th-Anniversary-Memoir-Craft...

3) The Elements of Style - Strunk & White - https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Style-Fourth-William-Strunk/...

The two most important points are concise style and active voice. Both of these habits are critical for SEs to write concise emails, specs and commit messages. You will even see improvement in more casual day to day interactions (via slack, SMS etc).
