StefanBatory··on U.S. and El Salvador Say They Won't Return Man Who Was Mistakenly Deported
Follow-up: Alright, thankfully I was wrong.
StefanBatory··on Discord's face scanning age checks 'start of a bigger shift'
I had a colleague, that when going out with her boyfriend, police was called on him as someone believed he is a pedophile.

She was 26. She just was that young looking.

:/

No no, don't worry, it's fine!
StefanBatory··on U.S. and El Salvador Say They Won't Return Man Who Was Mistakenly Deported
I think they won't bring him back because he's already dead.
StefanBatory··on Google is winning on every AI front
I remember when LLM first appeared - on a local social website of my country (think Digg), a lot of people were exctatic because they got ChatGPT to say that black people are dumb, claiming it as a victory over woke :P
StefanBatory··on How a $2k 'Made in the USA' Phone Is Manufactured
... that seems to be, a really small number. I always thought it's going to be way more.
StefanBatory··on A guide to reduce screen time
:( I can assure you that was not my intention.

But thanks for telling me that; I'll be more careful in the future.

I have some subjects, at Masters - that are solvable by one prompt. One.

Quality of CS/Software Engineering programs vary that much.

StefanBatory··on A guide to reduce screen time
I didn't, honestly. In the end, it was just a gradual step for me. I got more things to do, I became slightly more social, talked to more and more people, and it just happened. I still deal with it, just on a lesser scale where it's managable unless I have a bad day - in which case again I'll turn to screens for comfort. But it's rare.
StefanBatory··on A guide to reduce screen time
Ah, sorry then. I thought that idiom has different meaning, thank you for correcting me.
StefanBatory··on A guide to reduce screen time
Yeah, which is I'm saying that's why you should listen to the poster above - to prove their point.

Unless I wrote it in a confusing way, in which case I do apologise

StefanBatory··on A guide to reduce screen time
Yes, exactly. I had no idea what to do with myself, and thus all I did was browsed Internet. I thought that getting rid of it will "fix" me (to be honest, I think I confused cause and effect). And so, I tried.

But I had nothing to replace this with, and I didn't magically became a disciplined or productive person. And then I would go back to my bad habits, just feeling even stronger self-hatred.

StefanBatory··on The guide to reduce screen time
Been there, done that. Listen to the person above me.

I tried to do that in the past when I my depression was more severe. I thought that'd help me, but I replaced staring at my screen with staring at wall or just sleeping.

StefanBatory··on Show HN: I Built a Tool to Find Devs Based on Code, Not LinkedIn Titles
I think the belief is that they think that knowing some framework/language/tool etc. is harmful, i.e a candidate not knowing that would be better, has some better habits, and so on. I've saw that come up a few times
StefanBatory··on Brazil's government-run payments system has become dominant
I remember when I was creating my first bank account, I had to sign under a lot of papers stating that I am not an American citizen and that I'm not lying because of this.
StefanBatory··on Brazil's government-run payments system has become dominant
It is something like Polish Blik / Chinese WeChat payment system, I understand?
StefanBatory··on Peter Navarro Invented an Expert for His Books, Based on Himself (2019)
It's this - it was from vice spokesman of PiS, Jarosław Fogiel.

EDIT: Wait a second, I need to check something. EDIT 2: Huh, I think I fell for this the entire time.

It's "Z podobnym problemem mierzyliśmy się, kiedy sprawowaliśmy władzę w latach 2005-2007. Wtedy poszliśmy w kierunku bardzo eksperckim, właśnie otwartych konkursów jeśli chodzi o rady nadzorcze. Trafiali tam eksperci z rynku, trafiały osoby z tytułami naukowymi, z SGH, z innych uczelni. No i problem okazał się taki, że ich sposób myślenia o gospodarce, o zarządzaniu był zupełnie sprzeczny z tym, co Prawo i Sprawiedliwość ma w swoim programie."

Which translates to "We faced a similar problem when we were in power in 2005-2007. Then we went in a very expert direction, precisely open competitions when it came to supervisory boards. Experts from the market ended up there, people with academic degrees, from the Warsaw School of Economics, from other universities. Well, and the problem turned out to be that their way of thinking about the economy, about management was completely contrary to what Law and Justice has in its program."

... so that quote was from editiorial summarising it, not that person himself.

StefanBatory··on Peter Navarro Invented an Expert for His Books, Based on Himself (2019)
To quote from previous Polish govt - "we do not hire experts, because when we hired experts they did not want to implement our program"
StefanBatory··on The Mensa Reading List for Grades 9-12
I guess as you say, it's a social club of sorts. I imagine that they could instill some good values in younger children/teenagers, and so on.

But this is all guessing.

StefanBatory··on The Mensa Reading List for Grades 9-12
Yes, but the purpose of reading those books is not for fun; just like going through a textbook will not be fun all the time. You are supposed to read them in order to train your mind, at least I think so. Especially if you're in Mensa.
StefanBatory··on The Mensa Reading List for Grades 9-12
Looking at the list, I wish that they included more non-Anglosphere authors. Skimming at it, it does seem a tad Anglo-centric with that.

StefanBatory··on Photo calorie app Cal AI was built by two teenagers
So is this the case of final exams being too easy and unis having to adjust around that?

Or is it that way because of some other factors? I was thinking how much of this is because of historical factors; I assume in times before standarised exams it would be a very convinient way of finding new students. But then, I don't know how it was historically in Europe/Asia.

StefanBatory··on Photo calorie app Cal AI was built by two teenagers
American system of admissions to me seems so weird. Is it only there that unis accept mostly on extra things and not grades/test scores itself?

I'm Polish, here the only thing that matters is your final test scores, and nothing else. And I think it's same in the most of Europe and Asia too, right?

My impression is that American unis care way more about social aspect and so on, which I don't understand (but I guess it's a fine way of looking at things, too.)

StefanBatory··on Doge staffer's YouTube nickname accidentally revealed his teen hacking activity
According to the previous party that ruled the country, my entire existence was "ideological" and I was a "rainbow disease".

And then those same politicals complain, why everything is so tribal :P

StefanBatory··on MIT 6.5950 Secure Hardware Design – An open-source course on hardware attacks
From my experience at uni, it was the young teachers that cared. Older ones would go through motions, teaching us what was the state of programming 20-30 years ago ;)
StefanBatory··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
I don't think they're arguing in a good faith with you.

"“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

StefanBatory··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
I am bi, my "friends" would hate LGBT people, constantly talk how we're pedophiles and so on, and kept voting for parties against equal rights.
