Stagnant··on Highlights from the Claude 4 system prompt
No default system prompt in the API. There are some topics I much prefer chatting with the API due to system prompt of the web front-end being so restrictive (eg. song lyrics). In general I recommend people to try the API with no system prompt to more accurately see what the default tone of a model is.
Stagnant··on Data breach exposes 184M passwords, likely captured by malware
The data appears to be from malware victims, not from compromised services.
Stagnant··on Data breach exposes 184M passwords, likely captured by malware
>from breached sites and servers.

That part is just incorrect and doesn't make any sense. Infostealers typically grab the credentials that a victim of a malware has saved in browser password managers.

Stagnant··on Discord Unveiled: A Comprehensive Dataset of Public Communication (2015-2024)
A big difference is that on Discord anybody who joins a server gets access to full history of chat logs whereas with IRC you don't get access to any past logs. So compared to IRC, Discord users should have an even lower expectation of privacy.
Stagnant··on Show HN: A free, privacy preserving, archive of public Discord servers
Incredible work! Truly eye-opening to see how some rarer keywords in my native language return pages of relevant results. Meanwhile google gives 0 results or just AI/ad spam.
Stagnant··on BuyMeACoffee silently dropped support for many countries (2024)
Bitcoin has had periods of high network load in the past but as of late the fees have stayed relatively low. Currently the cost for a single transaction usually falls between $0.1-0.4.
Stagnant··on The Policy Puppetry Prompt: Novel bypass for major LLMs
I think ChatGPT (the app / web interface) runs prompts through an additional moderation layer. I'd assume the tests on these different models were done with using API which don't have additional moderation. I tried the meth one with GPT4.1 and it seemed to work.
Stagnant··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on the Chrome Store
For now you can still bring back manifest v2 support (which re-enables ublock origin if you haven't removed it) by making registry changes. Obviously only a temporary solution, might buy you a few months.

Powershell commands to set them:

1. New-Item -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome" -Force

2. New-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome" -Name "ExtensionManifestV2Availability" -Value 2 -PropertyType DWORD -Force

Stagnant··on Half-Life
I totally feel that. The most fun I ever had gaming was back in my teens playing various different game modes in source. And yeah the communities really made it so special, to this day I'm good friends with some people that I initially met in CSS.

I can't help but feel Valve dropped the ball with cs:go and cs2. I mean, they did become incredibly popular but IMO there was potential for so much more if they would've supported custom game modes even just a little bit.

Stagnant··on One in four 2020 Tesla Model 3 failed the Danish periodic inspection in 2024
In Finland, the rate was even higher: 31.6% of Tesla Model 3 vehicles failed inspection in 2023[0] (2024 stats have not yet been released)

Stagnant··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
10 years is plenty. No point in keeping non-violent offenders behind bars for absurd amounts of time.
Stagnant··on I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back
For me it depends on what I'm doing. I too like the edit and resend ability in firefox dev tools but what I've found it lacking is the option to automatically open dev tools for pop ups, which is possible in chrome.
Stagnant··on Microsoft disguises Bing as Google to fool inattentive searchers
I've never used bing that much, but after google removed its cache feature last year, I found myself using bing a lot more often. A couple of weeks back I was so disappointed to find out that Microsoft had pulled the plug on bing's cache as well. I just can't grasp why anyone would think that removing the one feature that gave you edge over the competition was a good idea. AFAIK now the only search engine remaining with a cache is yandex.
Stagnant··on 3blue1brown YouTube Bitcoin video taken down as copyright violation
They don't but if it is a popular video the likelyhood of it being archived increases. It is possible to submit URLs to archive.org manually too. Also the youtube videos downloaded by archiveteam volunteers[0] possibly end up in wayback machine though I'm not sure if it happens automatically anymore.

Stagnant··on The GPU, not the TPM, is the root of hardware DRM
Yes, you can get around it by playing the video in a virtual machine and capturing it from the host. For widevine videos playing in browser it is also as trivial as disabling hardware acceleration from the browser's settings.
Stagnant··on After twelve years of writing about Bitcoin, here's how my thinking has changed
The average confirmation time is actually explained by very old transactions that have been in the mempool for weeks or months finally being included due to transaction fees being low enough[0]. This of course raises the average confirmation time metric, but the average time for a new transaction to be included was on average 10 minutes like it always is assuming fees paid are above block minimum.

Stagnant··on How WhatsApp became an unstoppable global cultural force
I see many people in this thread thinking that WhatsApp took off because of SMS costs, and while that may be true in some countries, at least here in Finland I think the biggest factor were group chats. By 2013-2014 basically every high school and college class had their own whatsapp group chat since it made sharing of videos/photos and keeping in touch with everyone so much easier. By 2017 i'd say the vast majority of smartphone users under 60 years old were using whatsapp and nowadays even my almost 90-year old grandma uses it primarily for video calls and to receive photos/videos.

This got me wondering if people in US do not typically have such group chats or whats the alternative?

Stagnant··on Two undersea cables in Baltic Sea disrupted
I think it is slightly higher than normal. I remember getting 30-40ms pings to germany in recent years. 45-55ms is around the range it used to be in early 2010's before the direct cable from finland to germany was built.
Stagnant··on Opera will always help you block ads natively
I remember Opera as being decent in the very early 2000's before Firefox took off. I also occasionally used it in the early 2010's but switched it for Vivaldi when Opera was sold to chinese ownership.

Opera mini was also great for pre-touchscreen Nokia sybian phones in the mid 2000's as it made browsing the internet somewhat bearable.

Stagnant··on Bitcoin puzzle #66 was solved: 6.6 BTC (~$400k) withdrawn
That is correct. Basically you have to get lucky that after submitting the transaction a new block would be confirmed within 1-2 minutes which I think is around the timeframe what it will take for a top consumer GPU to bruteforce the private key.

I'd be curious to know if it is possible at all to "securely" send the funds of these puzzles or if there is some hard limit that requires the pubkey to be published with the transaction.

Stagnant··on Bitcoin puzzle #66 was solved: 6.6 BTC (~$400k) withdrawn
It is based on the fact that the upper range limit of the private key used in the puzzle is known. A securely generated private key would not be vulnerable even if its public key is known.

The second post on this thread[0] has a helpful chart that makes it easier to understand.

Stagnant··on Keyhole – Forge own Windows Store licenses
The links to download the official microsoft signed HEVC installers can actually also be found at massgrave.dev[0] It truly is an awesome resource.

Stagnant··on Americans' love affair with big cars is killing them
I don't think it is fair to say that it is an "American problem". Not owning a car could be realistic if you live in a really large city where moving with public transport can potentially be faster than moving with a car. But even then I wonder how a family with kids would carry groceries unless you live right next to a supermarket.

Often times in HN you get the impression like americans are the only ones using cars to get around, but at least where I live (Finland) families generally own at least one car even if good public transportation is available. In 2021, 89% of adult men and 76% of women had a drivers license and I would say that commuting to work with a car is more common than with public transport. Despite having decent public transportation, it is just seen more convenient to use the car.

Stagnant··on Telegram boss banned from leaving France in criminal probe
I've assumed it is because domestically it looks good for him to 'support' a Russian citizen, while simultaneously being a bad look for Durov in the west.
Stagnant··on Is Telegram really an encrypted messaging app?
The difference between telegram and others is that in telegram you can type "<city> drugs" to global search and find groups with drug dealers and buyers near you instantly. I don't think his arrest has anything to do with the level of encryption at all.

Personally I find Telegram kind of refreshing in nowadays internet landscape where everything is so sanitized. You can discover all kinds of niches you never knew existed.

Stagnant··on Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested at French airport
Well, they are "encrypted", but not end-to-end encrypted. Encryption does not really mean much if someone else has the keys. So it is reasonable to treat non-secret chat messages as if they were unencrypted.
Stagnant··on Deep Live Cam: Real-time face swapping and one-click video deepfake tool
Looks like this project is a fork of the discontinued roop[0] with primarily some UI improvements. One of roop's main developers has been working on facefusion[1] for the past year and it produces by far the most convincing results from the ones i've seen and it also supports real time webcam face swapping.

Stagnant··on Foobar2000
As someone who uses foobar daily, I get my music mainly from the streaming platform Deezer. With the hi-fi subscription you get access to high quality audio and there are some unofficial tools that make it possible to download the flac files. It is super convenient for they have extensive metadata, album art and more recently lyrics as well. Occasionally I may download torrents but that is rare nowadays.

I also own physical copies for vast majority of the music that I download but I basically only buy them to support the artist and to read the booklet.

Stagnant··on DB Browser for SQLite (Windows, macOS, and Most Versions of Linux)
All of those DLLs are included in the same zip file as the portable exe. Sounds like you may be trying to run it without extracting first.
Stagnant··on SEC vs. Consensys
Maybe I am missing something but it feels like massive overreach from SEC. Wouldn't this make basically any software / front-end that performs token swaps via smart contract interactions illegal in the eyes of SEC? Or is the key issue the fact that Consensys has profited from it by having additional fees?
