You may need to build it yourself, but it looks like everything a HN-using MP3-buyer would want.
"Android is not very good" is completely subjective. It does provide access to streaming services and lots of media player options.
The iPod was definitely known for a high quality DAC+amp, but do we know what's inside each older or budget Android device? A lot of components have improved over 20 years, and others haven't. I would also disagree that it "just worked." The cable was proprietary (after Gen 2), iTunes was often buggy and locked down, it didn't support standard FLAC files, you couldn't extract audio officially.
And considering that there are numerous audiophile-focused MP3 players on the market from Sony and FiiO, plus cheap nuggets from no name brands which likely play music just fine... what's being spoken volumes?
One of the best places to have MD is in a car. You can quickly identify (by unique color or label) each disc, which is either a full album presented as the artist intended or a playlist you curated. There's no "shuffle all 5000 songs" or "here's a playlist Spotify calls 80s kitchen songs but is half 90s pop you've heard before"
I think it's an unfortunate reality whenever you have a network which is popularized by a boycott of other services' actions or values. Those who care the most or are the most affected by the actions are the most likely to leave and be very vocal in the new space, so the new space becomes "theirs." Meanwhile, the original space(s) still keep a lot of the old users who are supportive, ignorant, or ambivalent, so both places become a little more echoed and extreme.
When Reddit ditched 3rd party clients and generally enshittified, I didn't jump ship to Lemmy. I reinstalled an RSS reader and made HN one of the feeds.
That product category simply isn't worthwhile for big brands anymore.
Shame it needs such a modern GPU and $feature which isn't offered by my preferred Alpine Linux. But that shouldn't detract from what it's promising.
Many of the perceived issues come from (I'll say it) corrupt judges who let out career petty criminals on a bail-less "promise to appear." Some officers report arresting the same person twice in one shift.
At least it's not TPS, where the chief likes to protect officers who commit perjury in the name of framing an innocent man for a Sergeant's suicide.
I get it, I'm a tech and Joe Normie shouldn't have to know the difference between DISM and WSUS. But even under the default settings in consumer Windows, the "Active hours" will be set to standard work hours or adjust based on your usage. So on Wednesday morning after Patch Tuesday, my PC has restarted overnight. If I defer an update or reboot, it will remind me and still only force a reboot outside of those active hours.
And Microsoft are the worst. On my Apple and Samsung devices its just a notification with the ability to defer and a notification of when the update will happen automatically. Even Microsoft Office on my work PC will have a white popup saying "close your apps to update?" and I can defer.
Things may have been worse in the past, but right now it feels a little bit like postponing an oil change too long and being shocked that the car acts funny.
There's association football (soccer), rugby football, gridiron football (American and Canadian), Aussie rules football, and probably others either in certain niches or in the past. I've been calling the NFL and CFL "gridiron" exclusively for a few years to avoid any confusion.
Yeah, cause you all stop offering them within one upgrade cycle! I just checked my carrier, and the only phones they offer with jacks are the lowest end Motos and TCLs.
You may be onto something with the first point though: while (southeastern) Brits may chuckle at northerners calling lunch "dinner" or the southwest sounding like farmers and pirates ("ooh er! combine 'arvester!") Americans do enjoy mocking words like "fortnight" and the pronunciation of "chewsday, innit?" too. So maybe everyone just mocks everyone else and I'm reading too much into the trans-Atlantic angle. After all, the way you speak is like a constant shibboleth and that's why I default to "what's your background?" instead of "where are you from?" in very cosmopolitan places.
Edit: Kitty-corner was the giveaway for Seattle, Spokane, and SLC. Although the one I always think of was this Starbucks which used to have another Starbucks kitty-corner from it in downtown Vancouver: https://maps.app.goo.gl/LPSk9XRaJMnDUGa66
