Spare_account··on Michael J Fox: ‘Every step now is a frigging math problem, so I take it slow’
> It's not a condemnation.

FWIW I'm inferring from the post you replied to that they think 'drugs are bad' so saying that Fox did drugs in his youth is a condemnation when you have that mindset.

There are some other answers already regarding whether or not these rules apply to on-duty Police officers but I think you're missing the point.

There seems to be a broad based perception these days that the Police don't obey the rules regarding use of force and they are not proscuted when they break them.

This might mean that the original statement: "the police can legally ... kick the shit out of you" is technically innacurate but it is functionally accurate. The Police do not appear to large swathes of the general public to be at risk of prosecution for beating the shit out of suspects (which basically means anyone they want to).

Spare_account··on Conservatives flock to Parler, claiming censorship on Facebook and Twitter
Every occurrence of "twitter" in the top level comment could have any other social media site substituted and it would read the same and still be entirely accurate (HN is one of the rare exceptions obv.)

I've ditched the lot, deleted my reddit and twitter accounts, configured my pihole to block the domains for the occasions that my willpower fails me and my life has improved dramatically.

How do you see absolute vote counts? I only see that for my own comments (and I have no way of knowing if it is fuzzed/obfuscated for me too).
Spare_account··on Whistleblower: UN actively passing names of Uighur dissidents to Chinese regime
Order has mostly been restored now, I wonder if that was users upvoting things again or moderation of some sort.

I don't think I've ever seen another HN post where every single comment was downvoted before. I know it's not the done thing to discuss downvotes here but it struck me as interesting given the subject matter of the article.
Spare_account··on Background Features in Google Meet, Powered by Web ML
I've often thought that on a touch screen device the OS should ignore touches on buttons/popups that have been on screen for less time than a human could reasonably have observed it and chosen to interact with it. If I touch the screen 0.05 seconds after a button appears, I was probably _not_ aiming for that button.

In fact, now I think about it, this has happened many times over the years with traditional mouse drive interfaces too.

I'm sure some power users would like to shorten the 'reaction time delay' or even remove it entirely so I guess that should be an option as well.

Spare_account··on New nuclear plant at Sizewell set for green light
My rough calculations me that switching my 1970s UK detached home from gas to electric for hot water and central heating would triple my usage costs (and that doesn't include the cost of switching in the first place).

I'm still interested in doing it though because it would massively simplify the heating system. Removing gas from the system would mean I could do all the regular maintenance by myself whereas at present I'm obliged to use a registered, gas-trained plumber on the boiler itself because the law requires it.

Not long after finding out about Aphantasia I found out about Severely Deficient Autobiographical Memory (SDAM) which I felt described my experience of life very well.

SDAM isn't a recognised 'condition' as such, but it has a subreddit with some active users to compare your experiences with which you may find useful.

Your tone is unnecessary; Apologising before breaking the conduct rules doesn't excuse the infraction.

You're likely to get flagged and certainly aren't helping your 'side' of the argument.

That said, you seem offended that someone might point out that an OSS product lacked timely updates. I don't understand your position, would you mind expanding on it?

This sounds like exactly what the grandfather post (by wasdfff) was discussing. A competitor advertised their product based on the keywords you searched for.

You didn't buy their product, but Google helped them get your gaze briefly.

What is search but a list of adverts associated with your keywords?

Perhaps this is unusual in the US but entry-level corded drills are readily available in the UK.

I don't know if this store is a good example, but this USA based store appears to stock a range of cheap corded drills:

>"What year where you born?"

Anecdata from me: I've never seen this as a security question,

I'm willing to concede that I didn't notice it because I just pick a security question at random and record it in my password database with a made up answer so that I can satisfy their test later on without using a real, guessable answer.

Spare_account··on Tesla’s former CTO is building a giant lithium-ion battery recycling operation
This is exactly what is described in Bestbuy three comments upthread, but in reality what is happening is the batteries are dumped in the trash.

What _really_ happens to the batteries that you responsibly deposit in the recycling container at your local supermarket?

Your link describes a failure of SpaceX's internal ticketing system which resulted in ESA thinking that SpaceX were ignoring them.

It seems unfair to paint SpaceX as anti-space telescope on that basis.
