SommaRaikkonen··on Hackers extorted $1.14M from UCSF
Hi, I'm not sure if my comment will be read since there are a lot of them already, but what would the best move be for a medium-sized company in this situation?

Hypothetically, the fees won't be as astronomical like in UCSF's case but the importance of the data being held in ransom will still be the same. Should they take the risk of getting their financial/healthcare/IT data uploaded to the public if they don't pay the fee?

SommaRaikkonen··on Rust and Raspberry Pi Tide Clock
Your story seems cool, can you elaborate? I'm familiar with there being 1 or 2 tides a day, but 4?
SommaRaikkonen··on Show HN: Keyboard Simulator – virtual keyboard designer
Thanks a lot for sharing. I used to go on /r/MKB a lot a few years ago, but I had to stop because I wouldn't ever be able to afford such nice-looking keyboards, as they were usually so expensive :(
SommaRaikkonen··on Prosopagnosia: The artist in search of her face
First time I knew about Prosopagnosia was from playing 999 on the DS. From that point on I haven't bumped into any articles about it until today (I never looked too hard into it).

Here's the sentence I liked most in the article though: "Prosopagnosia can't be treated - if neural connections are not established, they can't be created afterwards." That's pretty disheartening.

SommaRaikkonen··on Reddit Admins Takeover My Novelty Account and Handed It to Comcast
I wanted to keep the title the same as what the Reddit OP's done. Just wanted to share this since I think the Reddit admins have done a pretty egregious thing here:

- Take over a user's account without discussing it with him beforehand (OP's claim)

- Handing it straight over to another party for promotion (can be seen in /u/xfinity's profile).

SommaRaikkonen··on Why Should You Learn Vim in 2020
Wasn't fond of Vim, but then I started to play Nethack and its variants, where movement keys were also vim keys. Everything just clicked afterwards for me.
SommaRaikkonen··on US charges two Chinese spies for a global hacking that targeted Covid research
> Mandiant, the incident response division of security firm FireEye, said it has tracked the hackers since 2013 and the tactics, techniques and procedures used by the hackers is “consistent” with its findings

Can anyone from infosec chime in? I'd love to know how pattern recognition works in figuring out specific actors, since I don't have a good idea what "techniques" here means. Is it the malware used, the attack vectors, or something else?

SommaRaikkonen··on Ask HN: Is there static website software that behaves similar to a Wiki?
Notion fits your description I think. Some people also use it as a knowledge base program where they can categorize thoughts and todo lists.

I think you can also generate a static site using Notion.
