SomeOldThrow··on Have Online Reviews Lost All Value?
> Most restaurants are mediocre or worse.

Without knowing you and what you look for in food, and in eating out, your expectations of service, your enjoyment of the aesthetic, your appreciation of arbitrary culture, it’s very hard to give this statement any weight. There are more restaurants on my block in SF than my home town, and of much higher quality. If you find the MAJORITY of restaurants to be mediocre or worse, that reveals a value system incompatible with mine. I’m just looking for a new place to eat, not the next Michelin star restaurant. Abundance of choice is my problem that random choice solves neatly.

> It is reasonable to assume "built-in integer" means "int".

This strikes me as a little nuts for C but it definitely explains this thread. I just assumed people had already switched over to e.g. sint32/size_t to avoid this problem a long time ago. I couldn’t tell if this was a legitimate complaint or someone’s language lawyering tendencies gone too far.

SomeOldThrow··on Have Online Reviews Lost All Value?
Qualitative reviews, not quantitative. This is only crappy as a scalable business.

> Are they generally better...than picking a restaurant at random?

Depends on what you’re looking for, but I’ve had much better success off yelp than on it. I highly recommend going to literally random places.

I certainly couldn’t find the restaurants I do eat at on yelp had I had to look again: they’re all in the middle of the pack ratings wise due to people conflating food rating, service rating, and setting rating. Whatever I like about these places yelp does not expose.

Interesting that Apple forces you to use your device on their terms :)

There is a transcript that youtube provides.

Why did you arrive at this confusion?

Why would you assume your observations are relevant to the use case?

If you think even basic social interactions are lacking for suffering, you’re wrong.

FWIW SpaceX is exactly the kind of phenomenon that might spur state investment.

Sure, it definitely works great.

Is there a transcript somewhere?

Relying on profit-motivated companies to consistently provide value at safety critical levels seems short sighted.
SomeOldThrow··on Google to stop showing news snippets for French users
That doesn’t give the consumer any power here. It should be trivial to disable this metadata scraping feature. It doesn’t improve results so why should i support this?
SomeOldThrow··on Google to stop showing news snippets for French users
What do you mean by disallowing? Regulation is extremely specific for a reason. If it works, yea, that would substantially raise the quality of reporting. Google just seems trivially regulatable compared to “journalists”.

> They denounce China and Russia for their human rights records in one breath, and seek to strip us of privacy and personal rights in the next - the hypocrisy is simply staggering.

Politicians, generally, are not hypocrites. That implies the guise of good faith. Do you really think the biggest beneficiaries of terrorism are likely to be honest with you? Humans just like being told what to do and what to fear and whom to be mad at, and politicians make eager use of this role.

SomeOldThrow··on Google to stop showing news snippets for French users
Honestly I’d rather google stopped with this knowledge base/metadata extraction and focused on search. They’re trying to be star trek but they’re more like a concierge for existing businesses, and they aren’t much help where there isn’t existing capital investment. It’s parasitic.

It seems like the winning move here for public health would be to increase the supply of legal product to drain demand from the black market.

SomeOldThrow··on Microplastics found in 93% of bottled water tested in global study
Assuming there’s a lack of toxic effects because a human has not yet named any is fallacious. Safety is inherently impossible to demonstrate with certainty.

SomeOldThrow··on Tests show bootleg marijuana vapes tainted with hydrogen cyanide
You already shouldn’t do black market vapes. This doesn’t change anything; it’s not like black market vapes were state approved before.

While less common, San Pellegrino does come in a plastic bottle. I’m curious why they didn’t include the packaging in the graphic of the brand breakdown linked elsewhere, seems like this is a super relevant variable.

> In the presence of a black market producing toxic products, prohibition is a reasonable response.

How do you figure? Prohibition will drive UP black market usage. Why would you do that?

SomeOldThrow··on Open offices are a dead end
Sure, but that’s ultimately a per-capita performance metric whose reduction might be acceptable if costs for remote come down, much like accepting that an open office has an acceptable per-capita efficiency decrease. I am perfectly capable of pairing over video chat, even if it is not ideal.

Whose definition of class are you using? There’s a bunch of epistemologies you could be referring to. Many conceptions of class don’t have a middle at all.
