SomeHacker44··on MacBook Neo
I would not buy an Apple laptop regardless, but they at least addressed one of my major complaints:

No camera notch

Praise the...market?!

SomeHacker44··on I Built a Roguelike RPG Card Game with Compose Multiplatform
The author never links to whatever this Compose is, not explains it, IMO.
SomeHacker44··on AI fatigue is real and nobody talks about it
"Compiling!" (C.f. xkcd)
SomeHacker44··on OpenCiv3: Open-source, cross-platform reimagining of Civilization III
Yes. The threats are now from Apple and other vendors who increasingly want, build and enforce lock in.
SomeHacker44··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
Thanks. I actually have those two. I just never figured out how to get bluetooth working with them. The regular speakers or headphone jack work reasonably well.
SomeHacker44··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
My problem (having moved Win to Lin, Ableton to Bitwig too) is with sound. Latency is one and bad. Getting any sound at all on Bluetooth is also hard, where the latency is even worse. Wish there was a simple "apt install make-audio-work-well-for-daw" I could run on my KDE Ubuntu 24.04...
SomeHacker44··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
HP Zbook Ultra G1a, 128GB RAM. Add SSD to taste. HP supported (Canonical OEM) Ubuntu with KDE. Works great as a daily driver with a UGreen GAN charger.
SomeHacker44··on Immigration: The Federal Solution
Excellent idea. I recall that Republicans used to believe a lot in federalism and "state's rights."

SomeHacker44··on Google confirms 'high-friction' sideloading flow is coming to Android
Foreflight is iOS only. There is nothing even a third as good on Android. I literally have a one app iPad just for this. Sigh.
SomeHacker44··on Ford F-150 Lightning outsold the Cybertruck and was then canceled for poor sales
This seems like it is speaking from privilege. I have not even paid the car off, 5.5 years later. I am not going to sell a perfectly working (if not very good IMO) car at a loss. And buy what instead? No, I will stick with my functional but terribly unergonomic car now built by a nazi.
SomeHacker44··on OLED, Not for Me
I do too. Combined with progressive lenses and I have significant chromatic aberration issues. Blue and red pixels require different focus, which is sometimes an issue when solid blues and reds are on screen in close proximity. I turn off pure blue colors in my terminal emulator, for example.
SomeHacker44··on Latest SteamOS Beta Now Includes Ntsync Kernel Driver
I could not pass the making sure you are not a bot on an airline flight mid Atlantic. So stupid.
SomeHacker44··on Dell admits consumers don't care about AI PCs
I have a Strix Halo 395 128GB laptop running Ubuntu from HP. I have not been able to do anything with the NPU. I was hoping it could be used for OpenCL, but does not seem so.

What examples do you have of making the NPU in this processor useful please?

SomeHacker44··on Dell admits consumers don't care about AI PCs
Also the Copilot button/key is useless. It cannot be remapped to anything in Ubuntu because it sends a sequence of multiple keycodes instead if a single keycode for down and then up. You cannot remap it to a useful modifier or anything! What a waste of keyboard real estate.

SomeHacker44··on Eat Real Food
War on protein? Why does this comment belong in a recommendation list?
SomeHacker44··on Google broke my heart
I don't understand why the author does not just submit his ID and the copyright page of the book in a single photo. If the link the author is trying to take down has a copyright notice naming them, then link that too.

I am a bit biased though - I read way too many stories in HN of abuses of DMCA than this sort of issue. That said, this does seem unresponsive.

SomeHacker44··on Linux is good now
Thanks for that!
SomeHacker44··on Linux is good now
I use OneDrive and Google Drive heavily and there just are not good clients for Linux for those that I have found. Especially with the ability to not sync files but still "look" like they are there in the filesystem. That is my main stopper now.
SomeHacker44··on Linux is good now
I have the HP Zbook Ultra G1a. AMD 395+, 129GB RAM, 4TB 2280 SSD. Works great with Ubuntu 24.04 and the OEM kernel. Plays Steam games, runs OpenCL AI models. Only nit is it is very picky on what USB PD chargers it will actually charge on at all. UGreen has a 140W that works.

Updated Mesa to the latest and the kernel too.

SomeHacker44··on Microsoft increases Office 365 and Microsoft 365 license prices
My OneDrive went from 70 to 100 USD. That is a huge increase.
SomeHacker44··on Microsoft increases Office 365 and Microsoft 365 license prices
I would prefer unbundling this. I do not use Microsoft Office apps; I use Google Workspace apps which can read those files. I do heavily use OneDrive space though. I want to pay only for that. And cannot.

I would love to find a OneDrive replacement that works well both on Linux and Windows (and Android, iOS).

SomeHacker44··on Ask HN: Anyone considered forming a General Computing political organization?
Is that not the EFF already?
SomeHacker44··on Show HN: Chess on a Donut/Torus and Deep-Dive
Thanks for sharing!

Rotating the torus eventually hits singularities and I cannot continue the rotation. Maybe use a different mechanism for rotations that do not suffer from "gimbal lock"?

Would also be nice to rotate the torus along the circular axis. That is, rotate pieces/rows from inside the doughnut hole to the outside.

SomeHacker44··on Molly: An Improved Signal App
Android Signal does not support being a companion tablet app to a primary phone Signal. So you have to use Molly if you want to have Signal on your Android tablet. It has been reliable for me in that role since the Pixel Tab came out and I switched from an iPad.
SomeHacker44··on The lost cause of the Lisp machines
Which one is most similar to the entirety of Genera and also has a reasonable price for hobbyist use?
SomeHacker44··on Geothermal's Time Has Come
I was recently quoted over $1.2M for a geothermal heat pump for around 800,000 BTUs in upstate NE NY. The property is not even worth that. This used three wells drilled about 600 feet.

On the other hand the estimate for a propane heater upgrade from the oil boiler was only $20,000 (I imagine it was an underestimate though). And window units for the 20-odd rooms would be less than $500 each. Or a lot of split systems for $2-4k a room.

SomeHacker44··on Strix Halo's Memory Subsystem: Tackling iGPU Challenges
I have the Zbook Ultra G1a since it came out. The USB-C PD implementation is very bad, badly broken. I have not been able to get it to charge or even use anything but the HP 140W charger while on. While off, anything works, but once powered on into Ubuntu (from HP!) of Windows... It does not charge or use the power at all. Even with 140W 3rd party chargers from Anker, Ugreen, Insignia, etc.

Super limits its usability.

SomeHacker44··on Tags to make HTML work like you expect
Not a front end engineer but I imagine this boilerplate allows the JavaScript display engine of choice to be loaded and then rendered into that DIV rather than having any content on the page itself.
