SomaticPirate··on Can a Computer Science Student Be Taught to Design Hardware?
Hilarious to see Cadence and Synopsys in this article. They are arguably the cause. The complete lack of open source tooling and their agressive tooling price is the exact reason this ecosystem continues to be an absolute dumpster fire.

I used Vivado (from Xilinx) a bit during my undergrad in computer engineering and was constantly surprised at how much of a complete disaster the tooling chain was. Crashes that would erase all your work. Strange errors.

I briefed worked at a few hardware companies and I was always taken aback by the poor state of the tooling which was highly correlated with the license terms dicated by EDA tools. Software dev seemed much more interesting and portable. Working in hardware meant you would almost always be searching between Intel, Arm, AMD and maybe Nvidia if you were a rockstar.

Software by comparison offered plentiful opportunities and a skill set that could be used at an insurance firm or any of the fortune 100s. I've always loved hardware but the opaque datasheets and IP rules kills my interest everytime.

Also, I would argue software devs make better hardware engineers. Look at Oxide computer. They have fixed bugs in AMD's hardware datasets because of their insane attention to detail. Software has eaten the world and EEs should not be writing the software that brings up UEFI. We would have much more powerful hardware systems if we were able to shine a light on the inner workings of most hardware.

Looks like a nice resource for the OMSCS Deep Learning class as well.

SomaticPirate··on IBM tripling entry-level jobs after finding the limits of AI adoption
Every hype AI post is like this. “I’m making $$$ with these tools and you’re ngmi” I completely understand the joys of a few good months but this is the same as the people working two fang jobs at the start of Covid. Illusionary and not sustainable.

SomaticPirate··on Don't rent the cloud, own instead
This makes sense for HPC and ML workloads. Big batch jobs where you are pushing the hardware and having everything local is a clear advantage. Also this company sells hardware so it makes sense for them to have hardware experience. Still think that for the majority on here, needing to make a physical phone call to their data center team (!!) to rack a server is a nutty proposition. You think the AWS api is slow? Trying calling Steve. If you have fixed compute costs after a year, sure, look at pulling some stuff on prem.
SomaticPirate··on Gas Town's agent patterns, design bottlenecks, and vibecoding at scale
It isn't though. It crossed the chasm when Steve (who I would like to think is somewhat comfortable after writing a book, holding a director level position at several startups) decided to endorse an outright crypto pump and dump.

When he decided to monetize the eyeballs on the project instead of anything related to the engineering. Which, of course, Steve isn't smart enough to understand (in his own words) and he recommends you not buy but he still makes a tidy profit from it.

Its a memecoin now... that has a software project attached to it. Anything related to engineering died the day he failed to disavow the crypto BS and instead starting shrilling it.

What happened to engineers not calling out BS as BS.

SomaticPirate··on Tesla fined for repeatedly failing to help UK police over driving offences
Convicted 5 times... if this was a natural person it stands to reason their license to operate a motor vehicle would be revoked. However, a "corporate" person faces no such consequences. What is the equivalent of jail for these "corporate" entities who are more than happy to pay fines.
SomaticPirate··on Gas Town Decoded
Don’t forget the apparent crypto grift angle now (something related to BAGS)

Ridiculous. Beads might be passable software but gas town just appears to be a good way to burn tokens at the moment

SomaticPirate··on OpenBSD-current now runs as guest under Apple Hypervisor
Is there a guide on how to do this? I haven’t ever used the raw hypervisor.
SomaticPirate··on ChatGPT Health
I had a friend who has now gotten several out of pocket MRIs essentially against medical advice because she believes her persistent headaches are from brain cancer.

Even after the first MRI essentially ruled this out, she fed the MRI to chatGPT which basically hallucinated that a small artifact of the scan was actually a missed tumor and that she needed another scan. Thousands wasted on pointless medical expenses.

Having friend's in healthcare, they have mentioned how common this is now. Someone coming in and demanding a set of tests based on chatGPT. They have explained that A, tests with false positives can actually be worse for you (triggers even more invasive tests) B, insurance won't cover any of your chatGPT requests.

Again, being involved in your care is important but disregarding the medical professional in front of you is a great way to set yourself up for substandard care.

Seeing a ton of adoption of this after the Minio debacle

https://www.repoflow.io/blog/benchmarking-self-hosted-s3-com... was useful.

RustFS also looks interesting but for entirely non-technical reasons we had to exclude it.

Anyone have any advice for swapping this in for Minio?

SomaticPirate··on A Safer Container Ecosystem with Docker: Free Docker Hardened Images
Wow, "hardened image" market is getting saturated. I saw atleast 3 companies offering this at Kubecon.

Chainguard came to this first (arguably by accident since they had several other offerings before they realized that people would pay (?!!) for a image that reported zero CVEs).

In a previous role, I found that the value for this for startups is immense. Large enterprise deals can quickly be killed by a security team that that replies with "scanner says no". Chainguard offered images that report 0 CVEs and would basically remove this barrier.

For example, a common CVE that I encountered was a glibc High CVE. We could pretty convincingly show that our app did not use this library in way to be vulnerable but it didn't matter. A high CVE is a full stop for most security teams. Migrated to a Wolfi image and the scanner reported 0. Cool.

But with other orgs like Minimus (founders of Twistlock) coming into this it looks like its about to be crowded.

There is even a govt project called Ironbank to offer something like this to the DoD.

Net positive for the ecosystem but I don't know if there is enough meat on the bone to support this many vendors.

The AI water usage aspect is pretty clearly a lie and a gross misunderstanding at best https://open.substack.com/pub/andymasley/p/the-ai-water-issu... There are dozens of other things that use we use everyday that have a larger impact. I think there a real concerns here but the water usage argument is a poor one

SomaticPirate··on AI is making us work more
Curious about your hosting stack? I'm always curious if a jam stack site can handle these big surges better. Or is this just a single VPS?
SomaticPirate··on The Company Man
This reads like someone who is quite out of touch with the trades. A large number of states implement right to work laws that discourage union membership. I could go out and get a framer job today (and with the current immigration crackdown probably have one by the end of the day). Having worked as a framer before college, it will be incredibly long before these jobs have any level of automation (a thought which gives me comfort when I consider my own job prospects).

However, I'm thankful everyday that I get to sit in an A/C office and type on a computer. Framing is hard work and ruthless. Most people won't last a day doing it because of how challenging it is.

SomaticPirate··on Teardown of Apple 40W dynamic power adapter with 60W max
I believe current battery technology is optimized for fast charging. You are incurring damage every time your battery goes below 20% or exceeds 80% (see current EV charging recommendations).

Even LinusTechTips did a video that showed the length of charging doing more damage than fast charging. For the concern about thermal damage, most phones will throttle their charge if they become too warm.

Personally, I feel my wireless charger in the car does the most damage. It generates more heat and holds the battery in a charging state for longer

SomaticPirate··on Float Exposed
This came during my OMSCS Game AI course as an example of the dangers of using floats to represent game object location. If you get further from the origin point (or another game element you are referencing from) you are losing precision as the float needs to use more of the significand to store the larger value.
SomaticPirate··on 996
We need to collate this. Is there a repo where we can mention companies that do this? I’ve talked to HR reps who extol their amazing work life balance only to find engineering is expected to work close to a 996
SomaticPirate··on Performance and telemetry analysis of Trae IDE, ByteDance's VSCode fork
Honestly great to see this. This is the power that FB/Microsoft/Google have if they ever decided to take the gloves off. Maybe this will be the motivating factor to get some privacy laws with fangs.

If you continue to send telemetry after I explicitly opt-out, then I get to sue (or atleast get a cut of the fines for whistleblowing)

SomaticPirate··on Women dating safety app 'Tea' breached, users' IDs posted to 4chan
"An app was created to help women stay safe on dates and avoid creeps, proceeds to be hacked by creeps"

Not a great look here.

However, Tea could have done a modicum of cybersecurity work (or hired an outside firm) to prevent this. If they are claiming to want to keep women safe (and not just running a gossip board) then this should be a red alert for them. No public acknowledgement is concerning...
