SnowingXIV··on Google releases Bard to a limited number of users in the US and UK
I've been using ChatGPT to work on music theory and it's been pretty great, the responses are detailed and often have been correct and useful. (Don't ask it to tab anything. You'll get some rather hilarious results though). I've thrown some soft balls over to Bard, and have been really disappointed. Its responses are much less detailed and thought provoking. Also wrong. I started out by asking Bard the notes in the major scale of each key.

| C | C D E F G A B | | G | G A B C D E F | | D | D E F# G A B C | | A | A B C# D E F# G | | E | E F# G# A B C# D | | B | B C# D# E F# G# A |

For those are wondering it only got C right. The rest are wrong. (G should have an F#, D should have an F# and C#). Not only was this wrong but I asked for interval patterns for different scales and those were off. It started the natural minor with a half-step/semi-tone when it begins with a whole-step/tone.

I'll give it credit for being really quick and loading though.

SnowingXIV··on California AG and state senators introduce bill to ban hidden fees
It's become rampant in travel. Booked a simple vacation to Vegas recently. Between flights with their multiple fees you mentioned, hotels that almost are always charging a per day resort fee, and then ticket sales to any event that has multiple processing fees. I don't know how this happened but it's horrible.
SnowingXIV··on Tesla.com/.gitignore
100%. Tacking on to this, the last few places I've been the public facing site was usually managed by the marketing or design team, and often was used as a project to get them to touch _some_ code. Engineering rarely ever got involved with this if ever. If not them; probably a third-party firm.
SnowingXIV··on Apple’s next big thing: A business model change
This would be an absolute dream, dealing with carriers has been hell since the beginning. I often do upgrade my phone, but it's been a huge hassle. Sometimes the promos don't work well and they basically wrap you into a contract anyways. I'm honestly just going to pay extra cash and upgrade directly through Apple even though the carrier offers a bigger credit.

If I could cut them out all together and buy an iPhone and cell service with Apple. Done.

SnowingXIV··on Ask HN: What is your Git commit/push flow?
Yes, if you're going to rebase, rebase your feature branch. Do not do it on the shared staging/dev etc.
SnowingXIV··on Senior devs. Is anyone else insulted by coding exams?
I've been conducting interviews, we've experimented with adding some coding challenges and it's helped. Not live. But simple pass/fail write some methods to do a thing. This typically will filter out brand new folks.

But I do think you can have discussion, a technical interview back and forth - I'm talking details around guarding against nil classes, backwards compatible migrations, scale problems, real-world issues the interviewee has encountered. Types of tests they need. Maybe a situation where they missed a use-case.

If they are able to articulate a discussion like this, I'm pretty confident I don't need to run them through leetcode doing BFS/DFS binary tree junk.

SnowingXIV··on Hidetaka Miyazaki sees death as a feature, not a bug
Ugh, Isshin the Glock Saint. Thorn in my side, as someone who loves the entire soulsborne series, beat most of them (not including DLCs) - he did break me. Sekiro is one of the tightest, most well designed games, it's super fluid, you feel incredible and animations are on point. This game is the hardest of the series because it is not something you can stat-pad against at least not as harshly as you could grind on the other games.

I spent many, many tries against him to get to the later phases but still would die. Like you multiple days, many sessions but against Isshin.

I moved on and came back to my save years later, that muscle memory was lost and did way worse. Realizing this may be a boss I simply don't conquer.

Elden Ring has sparked joy.

SnowingXIV··on Netlify raises $105M and acquires OneGraph
Honestly, I still did want to work there and they said they would reach out next time a position opened up but this never happened or got lost in the shuffle. I probably should have taken it upon myself to reach out to them and that's a failure on my part for sure.
SnowingXIV··on Netlify raises $105M and acquires OneGraph
Years ago I applied to Netlify and went through a pretty lengthy interview process and at the very end it was between me and one other guy.

He got it. Now I'm really bummed I missed out. Hats off to him though. Really happy for Netlify's success, still use them for many projects/clients.

SnowingXIV··on Ask HN: Coping with cancer in the family
The timing of this post is too real. I'm so sorry to hear that. It's likely not any solace, but I've gone through and am currently going through something similar.

I'm working as a software engineer and I love solving problems but in this situation I'm absolutely helpless and I'm incapable of contributing in the slightest. It feels horrible. It can be hard to focus at work, but it is a distraction.

My mother just beat breast cancer not too long ago, it was a very long road, numerous surgeries, chemotherapy, an insane amount of pills, appointments, it's been hard. In the spring she was declared cancer free, we threw a party, everyone had a great summer, planned a few trips, but come this fall noticed something wasn't quite right with balance.

Dropped her off for a simple checkup. Maybe she just needed some physical therapy? Didn't hear back from her for a few days. They did an MRI and some tests. I get a call from her a few days later. Turns out now she's got brain cancer. It's in the pons. No surgeon will touch it, they can't even biopsy it because any mistake can prevent breathing or other critical functions. They still can't figure out where it came from. She got sent to Mayo for research and pulling at team together.

Her symptoms quickly got worse, blurred vision, losing control of her entire left side, so they immediately started radiation. We don't know where it's going to go from here because they don't know what to do. To make matters worse she's a teacher that almost got to retirement and is fighting every day with paperwork and countless calls and administrative offices to deal with insurance benefits, COBRA, pension, and disability. She used up all PTO and whatever benefits to get through breast cancer. It's a mess.

To answer your question, I don't know. I spend a lot of time at the gym and trying to occupy my mind with other things but it doesn't always work.

SnowingXIV··on Reflections on IDEA vs VS Code
I work on a large rails codebase as well but within a docker container doing emulation because ARM. How does RubyMine perform then? Last time I tried it felt sluggish.
SnowingXIV··on Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Robinhood in the State of New York
There is a timing issue at play too, even if that's true. Say you wanted to migrate off elsewhere - it could take days for funds to settle between selling -> buying on another brokerage. By that time they possibly could have covered the shorts.
SnowingXIV··on Select a muscle and it provides the exercises to workout the selected muscle
Compounds lifts. Often people get confused about what program to use or how to optimize. If you're just getting started - anything will work. Make going to the gym a routine and the rest will follow. You can ignore the noise (much like programming! You could get lost in learning some niche flavor-of-the-month framework and never build anything).

Do squats, bench, ohp, and deadlift. You'll grow.

SnowingXIV··on Artvee – Download Hi-Res Public Domain Art, Posters and Illustrations
This is pretty neat. I’m currently building a house and was planning to throw up some art pieces. Could you download these and send them to Sam’s Club or something to get them printed or would/is there anything wrong with that?
SnowingXIV··on State of Self-Serve Website Building in 2020
For a lot of situations something like jekyll search [0] works wonders. It basically generates a json file (you can customize it quite a bit). For even decently sized blogs it's quite quick and doesn't require a page refresh.

SnowingXIV··on Double Entry Accounting for Developers
Nothing too special, I worked for a few large tech consulting companies early on in finance but did a bunch of a side development projects/freelance work as well. One of those ended up becoming a full-time gig so jumped ship and went from there.

Best of luck!

SnowingXIV··on Double Entry Accounting for Developers
Spot on. This is another situation of trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist and the writer does not understand at all. There are reasons why GAAP and IFRS exist. Accounting can make a lot of sense to a programmer, I've moved between fields early on with relative ease because accounting is extremely rule based/puzzle-oriented and adheres to a structured and specific framework. I haven't touched accounting in years (though I do have a bachelors in accounting) but this is jarring and would not recommend this to anyone.
SnowingXIV··on Show HN: Chartss.css – accessible HTML/CSS charts with markdown support
Agreed. This is nice work. Recently dropped in Chart.js for an internal rails application to throw up some charts for users to get a better view of their data on their dashboard and they were blown away. A few simple bar charts and graphs can do wonders.
SnowingXIV··on Vercel, formerly Zeit, raises $21M Series A
I might be missing something. How does this compare with netlify which I've been using sometime as my 'heroku' for static sites? With that I'm also getting the ability to post-process things, use lambda functions, even get get forms for free (up to a point) which is needed for almost every site. It also provides slick DNS. Has worked wonders with gulp/jekyll/etc builds. This does seem to do all of that with the exception of forms.

If this is just another choice that's good. Perhaps it's faster? I've deployed using zeit and it is a really smooth process but not much different than netlify's build that works with a git push. Either way, congrats on the funding!

Disclaimer: I don't work for netlify, though I did interview with them awhile back.

SnowingXIV··on Ask HN: Recommendations for Working from Home?
Been working remote for a while (I still like popping into the office here and there). Agree with most of the other comments here. Treat it like you would if you were going into work.

- Take a shower and put on nice clothes that you would wear in an office. Keep the same hygienic routine.

- If you always drink coffee at work do the same.

- After work go to the gym (right now with corvid I suppose that's ill-advised depending on your location) but exercise nonetheless.

A lot of it is tricking your mind to get in a professional mindset. It's not that hard but I would say it takes a little bit of practice and getting used to. Gitlab[1] has posted quite a bit about it and might be worth going through.

SnowingXIV··on Tailwind UI
Recently used Tailwind for a quick and dirty MVP. It came out looking very polished (way more so than the cookie-cutter bootstrap look) and cut down the development time quite a bit allowing more time to focus on the important stuff on the backend. Worth giving it a try on a side project if you haven't.

Like you, I was put off by how crowded the HTML looked but got used to it and found it way quicker to update and kept the css file clean.

SnowingXIV··on Cloudflare silently deleted my DNS records
I did the same after getting tired of NC's DNS interface. I host a few client sites with Netlify[1] anyways and moving over to their DNS (NS1) has been a breath of fresh air. It is free but they do have some paid options and the is UI dead simple which should be a requirement. Feel fairly confident I can rely on them to not muck up DNS records as this is critical to mail systems, websites, etc.

Two years ago there was a moment where I was close to working for them too so I always try to use their products where I see fit. :)

SnowingXIV··on Ask HN: What job can a “jack of all trades” look for?
Really appreciate all the suggestions in this thread.

Very similar story. Beyond doing the full stack development of their web properties and internal database, design, IT, networking, I've created a marketing, seo, and advertising role handling all of that to bring in clients. It's a busy day but have automated as much as possible. Currently looking for something that checks all the boxes and that'll have me. Hardest part is remote is a must. Definitely don't have an issue traveling for work but relocation would be tough. Recently bought a house in the midwest with my wife.

SnowingXIV··on Some Google Photos videos in backups were sent to strangers in November
How does this happen? I realize it's a small percentage, but this is one of the first tests you build. Even 1 photo (not to mention this is regarding videos) should never make it to another non-authenticated user. This is a massive mistake.
SnowingXIV··on What happened to Mint?
It's a real shame that there isn't legitimate competition in this space. And before you mention it, personal capital is not a replacement as it solves a different problem.

One place to aggregate all financial accounts and give a clear picture, including bills, investments, categories, trends, credit score checks, and budgeting. Everything is easily synced. I don't need a desktop app, just a web app and an iOS app. There are manual solutions but I'm looking to have all this automated.

Basically Mint has nailed it if it wasn't completely abandoned and didn't as many account connectivity struggles. (it handles most of them well). They also have turbo tax, why isn't this integrated? You have your accounts connected already. Automatically pull the required forms from that financial provider into turbo tax. This doesn't seem impossible.

I don't mind the "offers" ad page, but when they started integrating ads in between transactions that was rather offensive. It's been a steep decline. I'm really hoping someone comes up with a strong alternative (VCs get on this). I'd be willing to pay annually too.

SnowingXIV··on DevDegree: Work at Shopify and get a free CS degree in parallel
This looks really neat. I wish I had the foresight years ago to join something like this or even do a straight cs track to a large company.

My path has been less linear. Finished college with an accounting degree then worked at two fortune 500 consulting companies. I spent my nights and weekends doing web development work on the side (even did a failed startup with a buddy). A full-time opportunity opened up from one of these gigs and I've been there since. Now I run all their applications, websites, IT, and digital advertising.

Whenever I see programs like this pop up I'm always intrigued to supplement professional work with an academic mark in the hat as I know things could wind-down here and will be on a job search leaving me nervous as a 30 y/o developer whose has been working at small businesses (and not anything like FAANG). This is why I'll still pick up freelance work from time to time.

For sanity about 2 years back, I did apply and went through a series of interviews and tests for a remote software engineering position at a hot bay area company. It came down between me and one other guy. They conducted additional interviews because it was quite close. I ended up getting beat out, the other guy had a few years on me.

SnowingXIV··on Tesla Surges Above $500, Leaving Analyst Targets in the Dust
How close are they to figuring out how to handle holding a battery charge in colder temperatures? A few owners around here I've spoken with have said they are experiencing nearly half the mileage this winter season and it's been a struggle for longer daily commutes. They also need to preheat the battery and some have resorted to using another vehicle.

Been on the fence for a while and since we operate with one car that would troublesome.

SnowingXIV··on Ask HN: How many of you are rolling your own auth?
I throw everything at devise. Open source, still being maintained actively, you run it on your own servers, and have had very minimal issues if any. Have had a hard time finding a better solution. Need payments? Slap on stripe.
SnowingXIV··on iRobot Terra Robot Lawn Mower – First Impressions
Exactly why I'm hesitant. The robo-vacuums have been highly disappointing and do a much worse job than taking the few moments to vacuum myself. I still have one that I run constantly because it's slightly better than nothing on a daily basis.

These cons don't seem terrible. Maybe in a few months we'll see some new ones on the market and see prices a bit more competitive. Appreciate all the input.
