This is how places like the US despite having 4% of the population have about a quarter of the material and energy consumption. Not to single them out, I am in Australia, it is a similar ratio.
I am not defending this situation, just highlighting its role.
This part of why I have been advocating for years that the open source/free software folks should be focusing on optimization and stability/security as long term it will probably be much more useful that adding features that can be dumped on top.
Problem is that many people today do still mistake Free software as no cost and for good reason. Funnily enough, "open sourcesource" turns out to have great SEO. Free software doesn't.
Maybe we can make chips at the level of a 386 but they would be freedom respecting.
Starting to sound like Stallman again.
I love his defeated responded of "It is amazing just how pedestrian those books are. There is nothing interesting in them.".
Hedges is always worth listening to even if you won't always agree but he does make doomers look like utopian optimists.
"Only a criminal would need 10 terabytes of storage!"
Something stupid like that.
Outside of the digital space, all the paintings I have done and everything I touch will be rendered null. Many will go to the rubbish tip either in my life time or very shortly afterwards. Don't try to cling on and drag this stuff everywhere.
Back to the OS however, hopefully you could allocate somethings to be manually exempt from the deletion but it would have to be done so that people must do it intentionally rather than just trying to avoid the issue of deletion. There are many one or two notes I keep with little bits and pieces I would like to keep, the rest of it is just noise.
I would also say that i have seen the complete opposite to you, alas this is all anecdotal.
