SkipperCat··on The Crime Rings Stealing Everything from Purses to Power Tools
I deleted by bank app from my cell phone for this reason alone.
SkipperCat··on Sea Kit
When you look at the defense budgets of many countries, it becomes almost impossible to make a viable business plan without the military as a customer. Plus, if the military and luxury markets allow you to provide your product/services to the academia and research (which typically have little funding), so much the better.

Not saying I like how we spend so much on warfare, just being a realist.

SkipperCat··on Eclipse viewing at 30k feet: Delta to offer path-of-totality flight
That's a great story. I was on a flight during the eclipse of 2021. It was hard to see the eclipse from the plane, you had to lie down on the floor and look up thru the window. You were very lucky for the pilot to bank the plane.

Anyway, stories like this where strangers help everyone around them experience something great always warm my heart. Kudos to you!

SkipperCat··on Restaurant Menu Trends
There's an inverse correlation regarding font size and price - the smaller the font, the more expensive the menu.
SkipperCat··on Navy again lowers requirements as it struggles to meet recruitment goals
Just gonna float this out there... Maybe the US is better without so many people in the military. Do we really need to be everywhere? And I'm not saying let's walk away from conflict zones. I'm saying there's not that much of an need to patrol the north Atlantic, or defend Japan or keep troops in other places which were only relevant in 1948.
SkipperCat··on Cloudflare Termination Video: A Master Class in How Not to Terminate Someone
It will do both. Some companies wont touch her but some will be attracted to her newly minted internet clout.
SkipperCat··on Cloudflare Termination Video: A Master Class in How Not to Terminate Someone
In big tech, people are commodities, not human beings with lives. Its not just shown in the hire/fire cycle you mention, but also in how many companies let the most vile content thrive on their platforms, with no consideration about the harm it creates. All of this to make a buck or keep the stock prices up.
SkipperCat··on Juniper Networks to Combine with HPE
Ha! I laugh because I've done the same exact thing... It is a paradigm shift coming from Cisco to JuniperOS.
SkipperCat··on Juniper Networks to Combine with HPE
Agreed, WARP mode on the Nexus does give some pretty nice port-to-port latencies (for a L3 switch - L1 gear blows them all away).
SkipperCat··on Juniper Networks to Combine with HPE
True, but a lot of companies want to source it all from a single vendor so they can talk to one entity when dealing with configuration/integration issues. Its not how I roll but it is how a lot of big companies operate.
SkipperCat··on Juniper Networks to Combine with HPE
But Arista only has switching hardware and a few other specialty devices (L1 switches from their Metamako purchase). Vendors like Juniper offer load balancers, firewalls and everything else you need for managing a data center or company.
SkipperCat··on Juniper Networks to Combine with HPE
Companies go with Juniper because they can outfit a data center at half the price of Cisco. NYSE did that a decade or more ago with their Mahwah data center.

Its not really a bad strategy. If you're going to have a large team of network engineers work continuously on a the Juniper tech stack, they'll get use to it - even if they were raised on Cisco IOS. Juniper stuff works just as well as the rest of them.

SkipperCat··on Fired comedian ordered to get day job back after jokes ruled 'simply funny'
True that, stand up is hard. I did a little bit and it would take me several hours to just get 1 or 2 minutes of content. And it was still hit or miss. Plus, when a good idea popped into my head, I felt like only had about 10 minutes to write it down or else I would just forget it.

Add to that the discipline of delivering the lines with the right timing, tone and pace.

Stand up comedians are some of the smartest people I've come across. Also, they're some of the most f'd up people i've met too. Its a weird combo, but I like them a lot.

SkipperCat··on Fired comedian ordered to get day job back after jokes ruled 'simply funny'
Its probably because the firing decision was made/approved by committee and 100% by an individual. One can fire an employee but its harder to deconstruct a system.
SkipperCat··on Substack faces user revolt over anti-censorship stance on neo-Nazis
But by going to 4chan, you are providing ad revenue allowing them to host pretty racist and hateful content. You may be there for the altruistic content, but you can’t separate it from the rest. Is the openness of the other content on 4chan worth that?
SkipperCat··on Substack faces user revolt over anti-censorship stance on neo-Nazis
I'm of the mindset that it takes work to keep democracy, freedom and egalitarianism alive. You can't just let anyone publish anything and think that it will all work out in the end.

It is tough because separating freedom of expression from hate speech is hard and prone to errors, but the alternate is to let Nazis and other hate groups to grow and strengthen. History has shown that when evil is given a platform, it grows instead of withering away in the light.

SkipperCat··on Formally modeled Dreidel for no good reason
Was the eating of chocolate coins factored in? I think you can consider the reduction of chocolate coins due to consumption as theta . My initial assumption would be that there would be increased theta dependent on proximity to dinner.

Plus you could factor in gamma as the rate of change of the value of those coins as gummy bears are within proximity.

Just sayin' if you wanted to be real technical....

SkipperCat··on I told the flight attendant "the WiFi isn't working"
The entire commercial aviation industry operates using the english language. All pilots communicate with all airports via english. I'm sure FAs are most proficient in english too. Its the lingua franca of the biz.
SkipperCat··on Los Angeles police flights cost $3k an hour, audit finds
$3k/hr to catch a kidnapper is not excessive. $3k/hr to go to a chili cook off is excessive.

Police in the US act as if they are royalty. Above the law when the break it, sacrosanct when their budgets are questioned. The one thing I've notice is when they're not around, annoying behavior increases (littering, traffic, etc) but society seems to keep humming along and it doesn't collapse. I'll take the annoyances over their cost and bad behavior any day.

SkipperCat··on "I just bought a 2024 Chevy Tahoe for $1"
This is hilarious. But lets not take this too seriously and say it proves Chatbots are worthless (or dangerous). People will start to understand the boundaries of chatbots and use them appropriately, and companies will understand those limits too. Once both sides are comfortable with the usage patterns, they will add value.

Want to know the hours of the dealership, how long it will take to have a standard oil change done or what forms of ID to bring when transferring a title, chatbot is great.

This is just like how the basic Internet was back in the 00's. It freaked people out to buy things on line but we got used to it and now we love it.

SkipperCat··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
But someone else's taxes are. Until we can convince both sides of this conflict that they need to love their children more than they hate their neighbor, this cycle will only repeat.
SkipperCat··on To revive Portland, officials seek to ban public drug use
Not saying I agree with Singapore's methodology. But their calculus is that one drug trafficker will bring in enough drugs to kill 5 people. Therefore, the murder of one person is saving 5 others.

Once again, I'm not endorsing or condoning this, just trying to show you how they conceptualize their form of justice.

SkipperCat··on Ask HN: How are you dealing with the job market anxiety?
In the spirit of your comment, there's nothing wrong with spinning your skills to fit the job req. If they ask for 5 years of Golang and you've only worked on it for 2 years, but you have 10 other years of programming - I'd just tell them you know Golang and have 10 years experience programming. No real harm in them making a technically incorrect assumption.

The real interview will be with the tech staff, not the HR bot. Let them make the decision to hire there.

SkipperCat··on SoftBank paid $1.5B to WeWork lenders days before bankruptcy
Don't worry about it. If you don't chase greed and don't try to beat the markets, you'll do fine with low cost index funds. Investing should be boring.
SkipperCat··on Judas goat
Great story about drug addicted Judas goats.

SkipperCat··on Geolocating WSJ's "Failed Rocket"
There also has to be propellant or else the rocket would not fly.
SkipperCat··on Iowa man files lawsuit after being arrested twice for criticizing the police
No insult taken - totally understand the overlap of politics and age groupings.
SkipperCat··on Tech CEO sentenced to 5 years in IP address scheme
In America, its surprising to find out someone does NOT have a gun.
SkipperCat··on Iowa man files lawsuit after being arrested twice for criticizing the police
But checks without oversight are worthless. Local police having a supervisor would be a tangible check on their authority.

Totally agree with you on your 2nd paragraph even though I'm a borderline millennial.

SkipperCat··on Iowa man files lawsuit after being arrested twice for criticizing the police
I think what he means is that anyone can be elected a local sheriff and because of that, you wind up with sheriffs who have no education or training in law enforcement. Often their lack of knowledge of the law creates situations where they violate other peoples rights.
