ShinyCyril··on Interview with Laura Poitras
I would envision more of an adapter form factor, where the hardware encryption is done on an SD-card shaped device which has a removable MicroSD slot in it for the actual storage.
ShinyCyril··on Interview with Laura Poitras
Rather than an entire camera (which would have incredibly high R&D costs and likely not be on the same level as professional cameras), why not just an SD card which encrypts the data before it writes it to flash?
ShinyCyril··on Steve Wozniak remembers the early days [video]
However, it should be noted that the video is a little heartwarming (and interesting) and definitely worth a watch!
ShinyCyril··on How NSA and GCHQ are tapping internet cables
I'd say UCAS should be on that list too (always buckled on results day), however I'm not sure that it's government affiliated.
ShinyCyril··on Ask HN: MacBook Pro alternative for running GNU/Linux
Be warned that System76 sells rebranded Clevo machines and has a reputation for poor customer service. Their flagship machine was also plagued with an awful keyboard - hopefully they've fixed this!
ShinyCyril··on Pirate Bay Founder Peter Sunde Released from Prison
> The entire point of prison is to suck, otherwise it wouldn't serve its role, which is to deter crime.

Prison serves many purposes other than punishment - one of which is rehabilitation. Making someone's life miserable for several years, purely to punish them, does nothing in the long-run - hence why re-offending rates can be so high.

These were featured in a great series of books about bats by Canadian author Kenneth Opel called Silverwing [0]. Many fond memories of reading this book as a kid.

ShinyCyril··on Whited00r: iOS Community Custom Firmware
I'm still using my iPhone 3GS without hitch. The only problem I'm facing is that the docking connector is on its way out and needs replacing. I'll decide whether it's worth my time fixing it when I get to that hurdle.

That's the one.

State Machines, as you noted, are easy to do with C. I think the added value in this respect is that this makes it much easier to manage the State Machines. I often hear guys at work complaining about how they'd like to switch to using an RTOS because the codebase is a tangled mess of State Machines (not that the two are mutually exclusive of course). Having said that, I seem to remember there is a tool dedicated to creating State Machines that compile down to C - the name escapes me however.
ShinyCyril··on Bike lanes have sped up car traffic in New York City
> I most states its legal for cycles (motor and non) to pass cars and pull to the head of the line at a light. Not sure why; but that's the way it is. Stopped cars + agile cyclist = no problem.

A lot of lights in London have a space marked out at the front reserved for cyclists and motorcyclists so that they don't get cut up by vehicles making a turn.

ShinyCyril··on Ask HN: Open-source apps built with Flask (Python)?
Reddit is a good example of a large application running on a minimal framework (web.py). I've only used Flask myself.
ShinyCyril··on Linux Laptop Recommendations
I had similar problems with battery life. Take a look at TLP [1] - my battery life improved dramatically after installing it (mostly on default settings).

ShinyCyril··on Coolest Cooler
Can anyone offer an explanation as to how this product just became the biggest Kickstarter ever? In no way was that a dig at the product -- props to them for their success -- I'm just having a hard time comprehending how a coolbox has exceeded every other project on Kickstarter.

Is it an American thing?

ShinyCyril··on Uber's playbook for sabotaging Lyft
I'm need to make a trip from San Diego Airport late at night in about a month and was hoping to use Lyft. Sadly their app is unsupported as I have an iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.
ShinyCyril··on LowDB – A flat JSON file database
I've been using TinyDB[1] on Python for a little project - it seems to offer similar functionality.

To add to that, the prerendering is done as part of the preparation of assets - if someone were to download and run this project then the assets are ready to go!
ShinyCyril··on Ask HN: Fastest static site host?
If you're behind a CDN then use whatever backend suits your deployment style the best. If you like working with git then GitHub pages and Heroku are both great.
ShinyCyril··on Shazam for Mac
Great work and a really interesting read! Really nice performance too - for reference Echonest advises samples be 30s or longer for optimum recognition.
ShinyCyril··on Shazam for Mac
The actual identification of individual songs is done using the Echonest API (they have a huge database of song hashes).

Before this can be done however, the placement of each song within the audio track as a whole needs to be determined, which is done with a combination of ffmpeg and C. Currently this process is quite slow and inaccurate - I'm trying to learn some ML theory at the moment with the hope of improving it!

ShinyCyril··on Shazam for Mac
I just found out - it seems like an oversight on their part.
ShinyCyril··on Shazam for Mac
http://audentifi.com does this :)

I must have skipped over the article as I assumed it could pick up on internal audio. Seems like an oversight...

ShinyCyril··on Shazam for Mac
Whelp, that pretty much obsoletes my app http://audentifi.com :(

Time to evolve!

ShinyCyril··on Show HN: Audentifi – Identify the music used in YouTube videos
On further inspection it looks like the video was blocked on copyright grounds.
ShinyCyril··on Show HN: Audentifi – Identify the music used in YouTube videos
Thanks for checking it out. It's very temperamental at the moment - something I'm hoping to improve in the future!
ShinyCyril··on Show HN: Audentifi – Identify the music used in YouTube videos
The hashing algorithm is provided by Echonest in their Echoprint service and used to compare against their database (hopefully growing after their Spotify acquisition). However before this can be done, the individual tracks have to picked out - I've not had much luck with Echoprint identifying more than one track at a time.

Python, RQ / Redis for the task queue, RethinkDB for the backend, FFmpeg for transcoding and C for DSP (only in testing).

ShinyCyril··on Show HN: Audentifi – Identify the music used in YouTube videos
Hey all,

I've spent the past few weekends building this:

http://audentifi.com

It's a little app to identify the songs used in YouTube videos because I got fed up of finding awesome new music and then not knowing who the artist was.

The premise:

1. Enter a YouTube URL containing unknown music

2. Click 'Identify songs' to get the artists and songs

3. Profit!

Now unfortunately the current version is pretty primitive and doesn't always get anything right - but you'd be pleasantly surprised the times it gets things bang on! I've certainly added some new albums to my collection since...

Here are some cool videos:

- [Not another GoPro edit](http://audentifi.com/identify?video_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yo...)

- [Fireworks From A Drone](http://audentifi.com/identify?video_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yo...)

- [Freeride 41](http://audentifi.com/identify?video_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yo...)

Intuitively...

- Sports edits usually work really well

- Longer, more complex videos don't work so well (something I'm looking to improve)

Any feedback is appreciated - I'd love to hear any improvements or ideas you guys have. I'm also tweaking the backend to use some machine learning algorithms to determine where the tracks start and end - does anyone have some useful resources on the topic?

Really I'm just testing the waters and seeing if it's worth continuing with the project. I can only afford to keep a couple of backend servers running, so if a lot of people are submitting videos then the waiting time can be quite long...

Thanks for your time guys :)
