ShardPhoenix··on Lovelace's Leap
If you believe this idea is false, why do you need to label it as a taboo thought-crime ("sexist")? (I didn't think that it was expressed in an aggressive or especially irrational way, in which cases some criticism might have been warranted).
ShardPhoenix··on Full Tilt Ponzi
The poker sites make a large amount of money by taking a 5% rake on every pot played.
ShardPhoenix··on Show HN: We made a spam-free lyric search engine
I just tried again, it's working for me now.
ShardPhoenix··on Show HN: We made a spam-free lyric search engine
I can't figure out how to do anything here. I click the text below the logo and it disappears, and nothing else happens.
ShardPhoenix··on Who Does Facebook Think You Are Searching For?
You realize he wasn't talking about you, right?
ShardPhoenix··on Flickr is dead
Maybe it's just because I'm not a photographer, but I'm surprised that something like photo sharing can generate this much passion.
ShardPhoenix··on The Brilliance of Dwarf Fortress
Apart from age, there's performance - even written in c++ and running on a modern CPU, the framerate can get pretty slow.
ShardPhoenix··on The Brilliance of Dwarf Fortress
Supposedly his code is pretty rough. That would explain why development is slow and the game pretty bug-ridden.
ShardPhoenix··on New John Carmack Interview
Maybe, but good programming is not the same thing as good gameplay design.
ShardPhoenix··on Response to John Cook's "Myth of the Lisp Genius"
It seems that the main thing this guy is really saying is that Lisp is easier to program in than C++. I don't think that that's controversial around here. What is controversial is whether Lisp has a significant advantage over Python, Ruby, etc. Heck, he didn't even actually point out any advantage of Lisp over Java.
ShardPhoenix··on Nodejs vs Play for Front-End Apps
Those sure are some misleading bar charts.
ShardPhoenix··on Duke Nukem Forever Gets Delayed... again
There were two Duke Nuk[ue]m side scrollers.
ShardPhoenix··on Steve Yegge's foreword to Joy of Clojure
Strunk & White is frequently wrong and doesn't even follow it's own rules. For example, what you quoted is obviously wrong - "better than me" is correct here and is what anyone who isn't completely pretentious would write.
ShardPhoenix··on Natalie Portman - Scientist
Sheldon is actually played in a pretty high-status way, despite his quirks.
ShardPhoenix··on Intel Closes $7.68 Billion McAfee Acquisition
I could easily see it becoming BigCo policy to only use hardware with Enterprise Security Robustness(tm), if only as an ass-covering move.
ShardPhoenix··on Putting the Science back in Computer Science
My impression (given the next FAQ about Matlab) is that by "abstraction" he means "static types". Whether static typing is better or worse for beginners than dynamic typing is (as far as I know) an open question, like (unfortunately) most questions about software engineering practices.
ShardPhoenix··on Redditors earning $100k+ a year, what are your secrets to your success?
Only while the housing bubble lasts...
ShardPhoenix··on Are Silicon Valley’s Engineers Underpaid?
I think the thing people aren't taking into account is risk. Sure, you don't get to capture all the value you create, but you also aren't (usually) liable for any value you might accidentally destroy, and you still get paid even if your project generates $0.
ShardPhoenix··on Warning signs for the year 10,000
Is the slight possibility of some people being killed in the event of total collapse of civilization (with presumably billions already dead) really worth spending time on?
ShardPhoenix··on Root molecular cause of declining health in the old found by scientists
My point is that you're probably going to die soon anyway, so even with the cancer risk the treatment may well be +EV. Similar to how people are more willing to undergo risky medical treatments when they're already dying.
ShardPhoenix··on Root molecular cause of declining health in the old found by scientists
While you probably wouldn't want full-on telomerase in your 20s might be worth the risk if you're pushing 80 :).
ShardPhoenix··on Predictions for the World in 2030
Only if it happens to go where you want it, and at the speed you want. Roads coverage is a lot more thorough and road travel tends to be faster outside of rush hour.
ShardPhoenix··on I Can Has Funding: Cheezburger Raises $30M
Unlike those things, there have been grandmas buying decorative cat plates for decades. Lolcats are just the same thing with an element of comedy.
ShardPhoenix··on List of JavaScript Game Engines
Isn't the whole point of HTML5 games is that they don't take the whole focus of the computer? Otherwise you may as well play a normal game.
ShardPhoenix··on Software engineers hard to find
"JumpForward interviews three to five engineers a week as it tries to fill four to six technology jobs, but most candidates don't have current skills or they lack the passion to stay on the cutting edge"

In other words, there's no shortage of software engineers, there's a shortage of perfect candidates. If these companies were actually willing to train people, they'd have a lot fewer problems.

The trend seems to be that software development, like a lot of other industries, is becoming increasingly winner-take-all, with huge demand for the very best of the best, and a lot less for anyone else.

ShardPhoenix··on Your Code is Not Self Documenting
I don't think every function needs a comment, necessarily, but I have seen "self-documenting" used as an excuse for not documenting anything at all. It's easy to declare code understandable and readable when you're the one who wrote it.
ShardPhoenix··on Technical job post tips for the desperate
>How is it that even large companies with dedicated HR departments, training for managers, etc. still seem to push in the opposite direction?

For one thing, managers probably care more (on some level) about asserting their status over the regular employees than they do about making the company more profitable (especially at larger companies).

ShardPhoenix··on Rich Hickey stops Clojure funding appeal from 2011 onwards
Combined with Hickey's post in that thread, this whole thing strikes me as rather petulant - "throwing the toys out of the pram" as the English would say.
ShardPhoenix··on Goldman Sachs invests in Facebook at $50 Billion valuation
If a company is not growing anymore, the only reason to own shares is to get dividends. If the P/E ratio is too high, then the amount of annual dividends per dollar of share won't be worth the risk of the company going bust.
ShardPhoenix··on The Hot Girl Effect and Networking
Good data, but online dating may be different due to the lower perceived cost of approaches and rejection.
