ShardPhoenix··on Are Stanford Students Just (Really Excellent) Sheep?
It's not like countries with universal health-care are so different in this respect. People are under a bit less stress but most still aim for normal "sheep"-like jobs and lives.
ShardPhoenix··on Jury in Oracle v. Google has reached a verdict on all questions but one
It seems completely insane to have a jury of random people decide these kind of technical questions.
ShardPhoenix··on 1 in 2 new college graduates are jobless or underemployed
I'd imagine it's a combination of: 1.) Hangover of attitudes from better economic times. 2.) Cultural pressure to be seen to "follow your dreams" rather than directly focus on money.
ShardPhoenix··on A Man. A Woman. Just Friends?
While mutual attraction is self-reinforcing, I wouldn't say that unrequited attraction is rare.
ShardPhoenix··on I don't hire unlucky people
I think that comes across as a bit smug.
ShardPhoenix··on Today is World Backup Day
Backing up in the sense of maintaining a full copy of your harddisk seems increasingly unnecessary these days. Most of the stuff I would care about losing is effectively already backed up on Github, webmail, Facebook, Steam, etc.
ShardPhoenix··on Why did Objective-C never catch on? (Ask Slashdot, Aug 2000)
Unfortunately this hasn't been updated in almost a year.
ShardPhoenix··on Java 9 with GPU processing, Java 10 will be all-OOP without primitives
On the other hand, not acknowledging what everyone is saying can make you look out of touch.
ShardPhoenix··on The Best Textbooks on Every Subject
It doesn't have to be perfect, just better than the alternative (choosing randomly or based on Amazon review scores).
ShardPhoenix··on The Proof Is Trivial
The script is trivial! Just view it as a concatenation of strings whose elements are pulled from a discrete set of terms.
ShardPhoenix··on Notes from UPenn's Forum on Brogramming and Sexism in Computer Science
That's fine if you also realize don't (in general) have the right to not be offended.
ShardPhoenix··on Electric Potential Pong (html5/processing.js)
I feel like the performance of these HTML5 games still isn't quite good enough for them to "take over" just yet.
ShardPhoenix··on TV is broken
Ablock Plus gets rid of them.
ShardPhoenix··on Is Throttling Smartphones Pointless? Study Suggests So
Despite this, a lot of plans (at least here in Australia) do offer unlimited text messaging.
ShardPhoenix··on Startup dudes: Cut the sexist crap
If someone honestly disagrees with something that's strongly believed by the mainstream, they may well want to remain anonymous when expressing it.
ShardPhoenix··on What Silicon Valley gets wrong about math education again and again
It's not a proof, but you can figure it out by considering some simple cases such as 2/3 vs. 3/4.
ShardPhoenix··on Farewell Stack Exchange
The Reddit/HN style is better when there are small number of most interesting or most correct replies, forums are better when there are a large number of valuable contributions. They're also better for long-running events and the ongoing discussion of broad topics.

Basically, Reddit style is better for "New Star Trek Movie announced", forums are better for "Let's talk about Star Trek".

ShardPhoenix··on Commenting, community deterioration, and Hacker News
Don't label people "jealous" or some other negative label based on pure speculation.
ShardPhoenix··on Lisp as an Alternative to Java
Invokedynamic in Java 7 (http://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=292) seems to have fixed this: http://ruby-lang.org.ru/post/5533.html
ShardPhoenix··on Stanford Free Classes – A review from a Stanford Student
If you had to pay up-front (even $10), they'd probably have gotten <1000 signups.
ShardPhoenix··on [dead]
Dictionaries aren't necessarily a good reference for technical terms.
ShardPhoenix··on Yammer moving from Scala to Java
Part of the original complaint was the issues introduced by using a combination of Java and Scala rather than just one or the other (with Scala-only being impractical due to the need to use Java-based libraries).
ShardPhoenix··on The Rest of the Story (Yammer & Scala)
Why are the needs of the "Scala community" to save face more important than the truth?
ShardPhoenix··on Why everyone hates the IT department
This attitude might be ok for managing the average office worker's machine but when it comes to jobs like programming that are not highly regimented, it's just not good enough. Get out of my way and let me do my job. I'm glad I'm at a company that lets us do whatever we want to our machines (we use a VM for the few things that require IE).
ShardPhoenix··on Clojure & Python, Side by Side
I found the Python more readable even though I have written programs in Clojure and never written programs in Python. In fact I'd be willing to bet that Python-like syntax would be found to be more readable than Lisp-like syntax for programmers with N years of experience in that language, if such a study could be conducted. (ie, I'd bet that an average programmer with 5 years of Python experience and nothing else can correctly read programs faster than an average programmer with 5 years of Clojure experience and nothing else (not that the latter exists)).
ShardPhoenix··on Programmers' salaries at Google $250k (and up)
The new paper didn't say that the problem wasn't correct, just that their original solution (test) didn't work out. It's true that it seems to be hard to come up with a reliable test for this sort of thing, but that doesn't mean that it's impossible.
ShardPhoenix··on Rich Hickey: "Simple Made Easy" from Strange Loop 2011 [video]
Good talk - reminds me of Yegge's recent rant about the Service Oriented Architecture, but coming from another angle (internal use vs. external).
ShardPhoenix··on OpenClassroom: Free video courses from Stanford University
I find the ability to run the videos at 1.2 or 1.5x helps a lot.
ShardPhoenix··on Who killed videogames?
It's more simulation than game, but one of the most intricate and detailed simulations ever. Personally I lost interest once I realized there was no real goal or point to it, but a lot of people like the sandbox feel.
ShardPhoenix··on Carnegie Mellon face recognition study has unsettling results
"Do you feel like you might be enjoying a privileged freedom that many can not hope to take advantage of?"

Do you feel that you might be someone who likes to ask leading questions?
