Severian··on Ask HN: Devs, can we please verify Gmail email addresses when users sign up?
I can see how this would be.

I've been in the unfortunate position of receiving very confidential financial documents, which I could have done a lot of damage with.

Most times I have sent a friendly "this is not the person you think it is" type reply, but with automated systems, this is impossible.

Severian··on Ask HN: Devs, can we please verify Gmail email addresses when users sign up?
I have to disagree, for most other email providers, this would work, however gmail this is a unique issue. Since gmail doesn't consider a dot, then by all accounts it shouldn't be considered on the application/site side as well.

Checking would short-circuit this, and simply not allow a signup at all.

Severian··on Magic: The Gathering Is Turing Complete (2019)
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought an infinite combo that doesn't require user at interaction results in a draw. So your first example would be this, but the tapping one isn't. It's been years since i played however.

Indeed, however one of the listed limitations is: The generated images are of a fixed resolution (512x512 pix), and the model does not achieve perfect photorealism.

Severian··on Microsoft is removing Maps and Movies and TV from Windows 11
Their weather app is surprisingly accurate and provides some good info. That better stay around.
Severian··on The white furnace test
Funny enough this Youtube video presented itself to my feed the other day that goes over this very topic in the planned Blender 4.0 release. They have a new Multiscatter GGX function for BSDF. I think this goes a lot more in-depth and presents a lot of examples.

Severian··on Microsoft Deprecates VBScript
One could argue PS has some shit-house qualities too. Some weird choices.
Severian··on Gcsfuse: A user-space file system for interacting with Google Cloud Storage
You can use S3 versioning, assuming you have enabled this on the bucket. It would be a little clunky. It would also be done in batches and not continuous append.

Basically if your data is append only (such as a log), buffer whatever reasonable amount is needed, and then put a new version of the file with said data (recording the generated version ID AWS gives you). This gets added to the "stack" of versions of said S3 object. To read them all, you basically get each version from oldest to newest and concatenate them together on the application side.

Tracking versions would need to be done application side overall.

You could also do "random" byte ranges if you track the versioning and your object has the range embedded somewhere in it. You'd still need to read everything to find what is the most up to date as some byte ranges would overwrite others.

Definitely not the most efficient but it is doable.

Awesome! Thanks for the links! Sorry I didn't see this earlier, my HN app didn't notify of a reply.

Does anyone know of the the "other" male scream that started showing up around the mid 1990s? It's a more drawn out almost growl-like yeeeeeeeaaarrrrghhhh. Usually in action movies where someone is falling or blown off a tall building or bridge.

It pops up in trailers a lot it seems around that era.

Severian··on Where in the USA is this?
My thoughts too, big WV energy (pun intended). I got 18 miles. It looks very similar to where I do a lot of camping.
Severian··on Ask HN: Has Google search switched to infinite scrolling for you too now?
> On mobile it might be. On Desktop it (1) devalues the scrollbar, since you can no longer use its size in proportion to its container to judge how large the page is compared with your view of it, and (2) adds jank while the next set of results is loaded (the pause while loading feels random rather than an expected event in response to your changing page). The other thing that's annoying me is the overriding of cursor keys, making each scrolling step much larger than it would normally be. Yes, it might be more logical for a keypress to step to the next result, but that's not how the cursor keys are expected to behave in the browser, so it's jarring.

I've been very cautious the last couple of years due to these bad actors when looking at packages that might suit my needs. If there is no online presence of the source code (git anything, zips/gzs, etc), multiple packages submitted in a short time frame, or a greater than normal amount, an/or a derivation/plugin of a popular package it's usually a no-go.

For those that I do possibly trust, I then download the package (pip download) and review it. Doing a quick regex for URLs or exec() calls helps, but I probably should use something like guarddog (https://github.com/DataDog/guarddog)

Severian··on Build your own private WireGuard VPN with PiVPN
The one problem I encounter with Wireguard is the use of UDP. Some publicly accessible Wifi nets at shops don't allow UDP at all, and this effectively breaks use of the VPN.

Yeah, there are utilities like setting up udptunnel or udp2raw and similar, but what a headache. I really don't agree with Wireguard's developers justification that it makes speeds terrible. Who cares? It'll be terrible using those utilities anyway. Give us the option, JFC.

I'm sure it did! I'm glad you provided this for them.
Severian··on Show HN: Homemade rocketship treehouse – hardware to custom OS
Man I love this. As a kid my dad had a friend that had some type of old industrial control interface, in unpainted sheet metal, he had wired up that just did blinkenlights. Had a bunch of 7-segment LEDs, light-up push buttons, switches, throws, dials, meters, and a bunch of other stuff. It had that tactile goodness that a touchscreen doesn't.

Basically it did nothing, but man did it inspire my imagination. I remember spending hours playing with it as my parents talked and played cards. This must have been the late 70s as I was 4 or 5 at the time (if that tells you my age).

These kids have it good.

Severian··on GPT-4 is Computer Vision on Steroids
I disagree with the other comments. This is a single frame of video, of which NO context can be derived. Anyone, not just AI can guess at "emotions" or "intents" or "attributions". It's all just weighted guesswork.
Severian··on Low-cost open source device can measure air pollution anywhere
Not only that, but they are deployed on top of automobiles, where the air quality in the surrounding air is going to be worse to begin with. I understand the benefits of using GPS, but I don't see where they mention this being an issue.
Severian··on My manager spent $1M on a backup server that I never used
Oh yeah, for sure. I got the gist of your article. I thought it was pretty clear.

But overall, planning a backup strategy can take some time. You need to know your goals before you go buy some vendor's hardware. But, in your circumstance, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Severian··on My manager spent $1M on a backup server that I never used
I can comment directly on this as I work in the backup sector. First hand knowledge, yada yada yada.

Dell EMC DataDomains do have good ingest performance, you can typically throw hundreds of streams at them and they'll greedily gulp it down.

And it is true that they are dog slow at restoring data. The reason? They are deduplicating appliances, you have to rehydrate the data, and this can take a very long time depending on the number of blocks needed that constitute the backup. Some blocks may be shared between hundreds if not thousands of backups. Dell isn't one to talk about their downsides much.

They are best used not as _primary_ storage, but secondary (think 3-2-1 backup rule). You should have some fast nearline storage available for recent backups that require really low RTO (recovery time objective).

Depending on the application used for backup, it may not have had native Postgresql WAL processing. This and may have had to be image based which slows down the process and requires some additional scripting.

Severian··on Amazon removes books from Kindle Unlimited after they appear on pirate sites
What, no. They won't finance shit. They are trying to reduce legal exposure with the minimum resources they have to use.
Severian··on Vikings went to Mediterranean for ‘summer jobs’ as mercenaries, left graffiti
This is funny, as I just finished a novel that had this as a large plot point. Talk about Synchronicity. It's Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland's "The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O". It's a pretty entertaining read, from the point of view of several characters.

I'm waiting for the sequel in the mail, "Master of the Revels: A Return to Neal Stephenson's D.O.D.O." by Nicole Galland herself. It appears Neal dropped off.

Severian··on Creating a landing page using AI tools and no code
"I haven’t found a workaround for this yet but I can imagine this would be a game changer if future improvements allow precise blending placement from one image to another."

ControlNet allows you to sketch or use a pre-existing sketch to then use as the basis for image generation. Allows for very, ahem, /stable/ variations between different sub-prompts.
