It took quite long for personal computers to catch up with super-computers of 50s and 60s. Many tools and concepts might have been conceived 60 years ago but they have become easily accessible much more recently. In late 80s and early 90s most people still had to pay a lot of money for tools like C-compiler and UNIX-like systems. Internet became easily accessible only in 90s.
There are some old techs that are just now becoming easily available like transactional memory. We used to need specialized hardware for that, but now many languages have libraries for software trasactional memory. Some are even implementing it as a language feature. This development is likely due to rise of consumer multi-core devices.
For example, would coal powered power plants be a problem if they didn't produce greenhouse gases?
Nuclear waste is the problem? Put tax on nuclear waste and raise it until the tech is either abandoned or the problem is solved.
Animated images have several advantages:
-Almost all places that support images support also animated image
-Can be downloaded and reposted (as opposed to canvas)
-No worry about audio, there is no audio
-Seamless looping
-Auto play everywhere
-Variable frame rate
These features could be achieved in a video format, but how would you convince websites that support images to support video with these characteristics?
For example, I would never let people upload autoplaying, looping videos as their avatars or as part of their comment unless I could be 100% sure that there will be no audio. I would have to inspect the video for audio and I would need different handling for images and videos.
Have you seen how people use gif animations?
Maybe they are waiting for all the promised features to deliver. So far I haven't seen working animations or lossy + alpha in Chrome so they probably aren't ready yet.
You're also missing the chat.
As for your question. I would not consider switching from gmail or paying money for an email client.
Maybe I'm old fashioned but I see no point in trying to replace email. It is an app just like everything else and any serious application should have some form of email integration.
I do like that they are experimenting with integrating the desktop to internet services. The only thing that keeps me from disabling web services is the integration with google docs and ability to open them from Dash. The sad part is that there is no obvious way to only disable Amazon, you also lose the docs.
See how well Nokia is doing with that...
On Windows or OSX though... If you were going to install X11 why not skip it and just install VNC?
It doesn't check if the letters get really tall: http://dynameme.com/embed/v1/?image=abedgun.gif&topHeadl...
The text doesn't get burned on the image so I cannot use the images as standalones.
Author seems to forget that these companies don't need to be of finnish origin. It's completly ok strategy to just educate lots of engineers and let IBM or other large company hire them (and pay income taxes to Finland). Educated workforce does create value even if there isn't silicon valley of start-ups in Finland.
I think you should use some transition effect for images.

OpenSolaris -> OpenIndiana
OpenOffice -> Apache OpenOffice
MySQL -> MariaDB?
VirtualBox -> ?
This is extremely frustrating! Why are they advertising products they are not willing to sell? (This problem is rampant in Finland, probably not applicable to USA)
Of course they might just come up with the same idea and find that there isn't a version in their first language, who knows.
Anyway, you can make an almost carbon copy me-too product to a new market and be successful.
