SeanDav··on In defense of 'flicks' (or how I learned to stop worrying and love 705600000)
> The number result is 0.008333333333 with the 3 repeating forever. For a computer to store a number that repeats forever would require an infinite amount of memory

This is clearly a literary technique to create interest. Like saying something like "I told you a billion times not to exaggerate". It should be clear to most readers that this is not an attempted mathematically precise comment.

SeanDav··on What Every Developer Should Learn Early On
While I agree that lines of code is a poor metric for basing decisions on, all the suggested altenatives in OP are very subjective.
SeanDav··on How to Measure Indoor Air Quality with a Raspberry Pi, RuuviTags and PMS7003
> My Android device that runs slower after each "update"?

This is not only an Android problem, Apple is equally guilty of this. Arguably, more so.

Nor is it a Java problem. Some extremely speed-sensitive high perfomance code used by high speed trading algorithms use Java. This is in an environment where micro-seconds count.

SeanDav··on How to Find Hidden Cameras in Your Airbnb
There will always be people that find ways around rules, but if the rules exist and are reasonably well enforced, then that is really what is required. This assumes the rule is reasonable, which does appear to be the case here.
SeanDav··on Cobol Still Powers the Global Economy
This comment appears to be fairly insulting. Is it implying that older programmers can't / won't / wouldn't like doing innovative programming?

Is it implying that if you like doing innovative programming and learning more about new languages and your craft, you must have a short attention span?

It is also rather naive if it is believed that anything other than a tiny fraction of programming in the real world is actually innovative.

SeanDav··on A material way to make Mars habitable
I found the Mars Trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars) by Kim Stanley Robinson a very interesting, although of course, fictional account of the terraforming of Mars.
SeanDav··on With greater longevity, the quest to avoid infirmities of aging is more urgent
Can't decide if this is sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek or serious. If serious - would love to see source(s) for that statistic....
SeanDav··on HN: The Good Parts (2017)
>> So how would you judge your comment by that metric? To me it seems you just repeated what OP said many times without adding something new.

One could say exactly the same thing about this comment - and the one I am making right now. Comments about comments should be kept to the bare minimum as they invite flame wars and add noise.

SeanDav··on IT Runs on Java 8
HN is a bit of an echo chamber. A very interesting and worthwhile echo chamber, but an echo chamber nevertheless.

This is not a criticism, but probably an unavoidable by-product of how it works and the audience it attracts.

SeanDav··on Technical Details on the Recent Firefox Add-On Outage
I too am a Tab Mix Plus fan. I was using an ESR version to try to maintain better security while still using my favourite add-on. Now seemingly not possible. I am quite prepared to put up with security vulnerabilities for my personal use of browsers. I use sandboxing/ firewalls / VM's to protect myself. Not happy that an older version of Firefox was broken. I don't expect a company to maintain older versions forever, I do expect them to not deliberately or accidentally break them.

Give me back my Tab Mix Plus!

SeanDav··on The one-salary experiment, ten years in
You are lucky. Sadly, this is very much the exception, although we can only hope it becomes more common. Human nature being what it is, people hate change, so companies can gouge existing users and offer incentives to new users to get them to change.
SeanDav··on At $75K, housing a prisoner in California now costs more than a year at Harvard
Even in free markets, Oligarchies and Monopolies are a thing. No system is perfect - potential lack of competition in niche areas is one of the weaknesses of a free market system.
SeanDav··on Google may rank sites for queries that don't appear on the page at all
I would so love access to Google database, but with Boolean search and some simple Regex / Grep type functionality. We can but dream.
SeanDav··on UK Parliament petitions site crashes under traffic for petition to cancel Brexit
>> "Seriously anyone who thinks the Brexit referendum was democratic or fair is either ignorant or naive."

You may have a point about the fairness - the Government did pump in 9.3 million GBP to push the Pro-Remain position, in the form of a Pro-Remain pamphlet to every household in the UK. This, arguably, was hardly fair as the Leave side could not hope to match that level of expenditure to air their position, yet the people still voted Leave - go figure.

SeanDav··on UK Parliament petitions site crashes under traffic for petition to cancel Brexit
If it had gone the other way, all these points would have been exactly the same - why would it be any more/less acceptable (from a democratic process point of view)?
SeanDav··on UK Parliament petitions site crashes under traffic for petition to cancel Brexit
If someone does not vote, when there was ample opportunity to do so, then they implicitly are accepting the outcome - whichever way it goes.

This actually should read "Brexit - The will of the 17m + 50m who are okay with this"

This would have read the same if the result had gone the other way: "Remain - The will of the Xm + 50m who are okay with this"

At the end of the day, there was a vote and more people wanted Brexit, than Remain. A democratic process and result.

SeanDav··on Slack enables customers to control their encryption keys in enterprise version
2 Options as I see it: Either don't use Slack or try to gather consensus and change things
SeanDav··on How Discord Went Mainstream
I wonder if this is the reason I am still getting notifications on 2 servers. It sounds plausible, as they are game related servers, so quite possible I was assigned a role. I don't recall investigating this, although it is several months ago since I last tried solving mute issue.

This does not solve my mute issue, but great to know that this might be the cause! Thanks for this.

SeanDav··on How Discord Went Mainstream
Thanks for the ripcord suggestion!

As far as server/channel mute - believe me, I have tried every option, including your suggestions. It works for most servers but I have 2 that I can't mute no matter what I try.

SeanDav··on How Discord Went Mainstream
I was a huge Discord fan, but now stopped using it for several reasons.

- I can't mute some channels completely. I have raised bug reports, tried all the various options, researched everything I could find in Google about this issue. Bottom line is that "mute" is taken by Discord to be "only mute, unless I think you need to hear this", with no way to fully mute a channel.

- I only use Discord in browser and it now has a complete and very distracting screen refresh every few seconds.

- It is a memory pig in browser and my browser seems to become unstable after a short time, while running Discord in one of the tabs.

SeanDav··on The ups and downs of porting 50k lines of C++ to Go (2015)
Where does Windows development fit into the Go way of doing things? Is Windows a first class citizen for Go?

Python, Java, C#, C, C++ are all very well supported in Windows.

P.S. I don't have any hidden agenda with this comment - genuinely curious.

SeanDav··on Google is reportedly shutting down its in-house VR film studio
It could just be that VR at Gooogle scale is not ready. There may still be a huge part for VR to play in "niche" markets like games, training simulators, data visualization etc.
SeanDav··on Online activists are silencing us, scientists say
If anyone doubts the power of the mind-body effect, look up Nocebo effects (opposite of placebo) where the mind manufactures "real" symptoms as side effects to medication. I can't find the source(s) right now - but I have previously read about cases as extreme as blindness and paralysis with purely mind-induced and non-physical causes.
SeanDav··on The Stigma of Choosing Trade School over College
A large component of a university education is not so much what you learn at university, but the doors it can open for you later. In general (with some exceptions of course) it is unlikely you would be using very much of your university knowledge after a few years in your job in any case.

You can have a very successful career without a college / university education, it is just easier to do the same with such an education.

It is almost impossible to get certain jobs at all without a university education. For example, try getting into a major investment bank in any kind of well paid position without a good university education or serious work experience - it is just not going to happen.

This is not a comment about trade schools - it should be a completely valid and respected career path, I am just saying that one should try getting a university degree if at all possible and makes sense for your type of career.

SeanDav··on John Lasseter taking a leave of absence amid reports of inappropriate behavior
> "As for patting backs, do avoid doing so. Many of us don't like it even if it's totally non-sexual."

...and many of us do like being patted on the back (non-condescending of course).

Perhaps in the future, we will all have to work in an environment where no touching of any sort is allowed, ever, but I can't help thinking that would be a step backwards.

SeanDav··on John Lasseter taking a leave of absence amid reports of inappropriate behavior
Not sure what you mean - I have been touched by male and female colleagues numerous times. Not once was it sexual, it was just people being people. Are you suggesting that they ask my permission every time before touching my arm or shoulder or slapping me on the back?

Can you imagine the following scene:

"Gee John, you did a great job there, I would like to shake your hand, or even pat your back (only near the shoulder mind you and no lower than a line formed by the bottom of your shoulder blades). Do you think that would be permissible? I want to reassure you that this touch will not be sexual in any way."

SeanDav··on Ketamine lifts rodents' mood only if administered by male researchers
Even automation would not solve this issue. If these results are scent related, then it is quite possible that different automation methods would produce different scents, or even the same method, in a different environment / location.

This is a fascinating issue.

SeanDav··on John Lasseter taking a leave of absence amid reports of inappropriate behavior
One of the parent posts mentioned that it is difficult to even agree what constitutes sexual harassment, so difficult to know what to act on or how to act in all circumstances.

Some consider a hug sexual harassment, some consider touching a knee. What about putting your hand on a person's back? Does it make a difference what part of their back, if so exactly how and where?

Sexual harassment should be far more about intention rather than the specific part of the body touched (excluding the obvious no-go areas of genitals and breasts). Generally you should be allowed 1 strike, for mis-reading signals.

In a society where men are expected to initiate contact, this is a fraught situation.

It is not a simple answer.

SeanDav··on “We have obtained fully functional JTAG for Intel CSME via USB DCI”
> "Apparently, ME is the perfect combination of opaque, obtuse, and obscure. It’s not rocket science, but complicated enough it’s hard to explain well quickly."

The way I see it is Intel ME is a processor-level application that has full control of all computer activity and cannot be blocked or disabled and can be accessed and controlled remotely.

Would like to hear other people's opinions of what it is.

SeanDav··on Fact or Fiction?: An Opera Singer's Piercing Voice Can Shatter Glass
We have plenty of "proof" and "witnesses" of UFO sightings as well...

I agree that a Mythbusters finding may not be proof of the highest calibre but they do go through a lot of effort to avoid false positives/negatives.
