Commenting on this to mark it in my feed for later reference. Well said!
SavageBeast··on More men are addicted to the 'crack cocaine' of the stock market
There is only one truth: Monthly account statements.
SavageBeast··on More men are addicted to the 'crack cocaine' of the stock market
I tried for a long time with stocks, then I tried stock options. I eventually moved off to index and treasury futures. No money to be made in stocks, shitty leverage, high fees, LOUSY TAX TREATMENT and to complicate matters further shorting can be problematic. Also no "real" market is open 24h so you really just get to trade open-to-close standard hours. Stocks just have too many things going against you to make any money and thats before you figure your broker is front running you in the first place.

My basic strategy is that the signal/news/data contains no real information beyond whether or not people are buying or selling. When they stop selling I start buying and vice versa. Use your data skills to identify "things that work with regularity" and "things that rarely ever work" while at the same time understanding "literally any strategy works SOMETIMES".

Develop a roughly asymmetric strategy where your average gain is greater than your average loss per trade. The biggest thing you need is to pick some BIG WIN trades and ride them for a large profit. A small percentage of big wins pay for the losers and make the whole thing profitable. Remember that you "Make more money" by trading larger quantities, not by seeking larger moves. You don't "make money" so much as you harvest what the market gives you and if its not giving you close the trade. Your chosen trading system should reflect this.

Size your trades such that if you're betting N shares with $Y dollars now and you take a loss, you're coming back to the table with at least N shares and $Y dollars. Never loose $100 and find yourself in the position of recovering that loss with only $50 to play with. Read about "money management" in gambling for some ideas heres.

Don't be afraid of the short side either as you will make about half your money there. Don't be afraid to bet agains the trend and "call bullshit" on a move - your system should be designed to detect the success rates of these calls and should be looking for those situations.

For me its about using data to make bets where, in the event I win, I win pretty big and in the event I lose, I lose minimally.

USE BRACKET ORDERS FOR ALL POSITIONS OR PERISH. AUTOMATE YOUR STRATEGY OR PERISH. ALWAYS TAKE YOUR TRADES OR PERISH.

Making profitable trades here and there is EASY - keeping the money you made on those is the hard part.

EDIT: If you're concerned about "slippage" you have a bad strategy. If the strategy can be undone by a .75pt slip then you need to consider something else.

EDIT: Don't be seduced by the High Frequency Trading bullshit. You don't have the infrastructure for this and the fastest safest Rust code you can write is still connected to some slow retail trading infra here. Plenty of money to be made in Low Freq mode. 20 trades a month per instrument is a lot of trades a month!

SavageBeast··on Ask HN: What are your top AI stock picks?
For lack of knowing a better play at the time I got long MSFT on news of their OpenAI investment. Pretty minimal exposure but more than what I could justify elsewhere.

I came here to say exactly that myself.
SavageBeast··on Are Ghost Engineers Real?
Firing people is hard and fraught with peril legally for a large company in the US. It was simply easier to marginalize them and get things done in spite of them. That was my strategy anyhow. My management discouraged me from making a further issue of it lest someone outside the org start asking questions about how we had people on the payroll doing exactly nothing for so long. Keep in mind that this was a team I was put in charge of, not a team I built from the ground up and groomed as my own. I inherited organizational mistakes/neglect and the organization was happy to not have them see the light of day that correcting the situation would bring.
SavageBeast··on Are Ghost Engineers Real?
"where getting in everyone's business is used to feign productivity."

I see this so often, everywhere. The useless people make the most noise, the productive ones are too busy.

SavageBeast··on Are Ghost Engineers Real?
"A Stanford researcher says data on programmer productivity suggests 14 percent of remote software engineers get barely anything done."

Having managed a team of in office devs, I can say that easily 14% or more get barely anything done from the office. Low performers are going to cash paychecks and underwork where ever they are. Bringing low performers back to the office won't help anything.

SavageBeast··on America's gambling boom should be celebrated, not feared
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astroturfing

Astroturfing is the deceptive practice of hiding the sponsors of an orchestrated message or organization (e.g., political, advertising, religious, or public relations) to make it appear as though it originates from, and is supported by, unsolicited grassroots participants. It is a practice intended to give the statements or organizations credibility by withholding information about the source's financial backers.

SavageBeast··on USDA orders testing of milk for bird flu
Bird Flu isn't new - this is posturing to justify USDA existence under the coming DOGE microscope. No different then when layoffs are looming around the office, you start seeing people showing up on time and scheduling superfluous meetings on "Important Topics" in an effort to provide the illusion of value/leadership. I expect to see a lot of this in the coming months.

The first detection of this was in 1996 and in 2024 its now an emergency to start testing for. If this is a real issue, its safe to say the agency has ben derelict for some time in the intervening 28 years. Im not saying its a terrible idea on its face - I am saying the timing for this becoming an issue is suspiciously convenient.

This reads like a guide on how to get fired for cause. Additionally its quite childish. Why not just throw a tantrum and save the trouble?
SavageBeast··on Ask HN: Why are Teslas seen as political while Macs are not?
I have a good many neighbors with Teslas and while the media loves to spin a tale about Teslas and Liberals being a thing, my first hand observations don't support that narrative.
SavageBeast··on Ask HN: How do you handle repetitive research tasks in your workflow?
One problem of mine that seems to fall in line with this: There is a set of data that some other daily process requires. This data is only available on a well structured and difficult to quickly navigate web page and any of it can change at any time.

I wrote a small Python program using Pandas and Beautiful Soup to parse the web page and insert all the data into a table. Cron schedules it to run hourly such that you get Cron->wget->Python->database. I considered using this approach on a variety of other things such that instead of browsing the raw data I could use SQL to query a database and detect changes, trends, etc.

Of course this opens the door of easy programatic access to that data. Honestly the need for me was never great enough to go any deeper.

SavageBeast··on Will the bubble burst for AI in 2025, or will it start to deliver?
I don't know how to precisely quantify the value I get, but Im happily paying $20/mo for OpenAI tools. I'll never again "read documentation" directly nor will I sift through useless SEO optimized bog-spam to learn about a new hot thing. Between these 2 activities, thats pretty much all I use the internet for in the first place and AI has become a core part of my life/work process. If this works out to be all AI is ever good for its still a win for me. I don't remember the last time I used the standard Google search for something.
SavageBeast··on Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy: The Doge Plan to Reform Government
Absolutely correct regarding medicare/ss/military. Its an issue. What will get cut? Enough things that we can start to have a real conversation about how much "government" we're all willing to pay for.

"What exactly will get cut?" - Make you a deal - set a timer and do 10 minutes of research on the subject and come back to report you found NOTHING that could be reasonably and easily cut?

EDIT - so far I haven't heard anyone claim we're going to balance the budget via this mechanism. The goal is to CUT WASTE and IMPROVE EFFICIENCY. I see this as a basis for having a real conversation about taxation personally.

SavageBeast··on Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy: The Doge Plan to Reform Government
People seem to get caught up in the political end of this issue but the fact is the US is spending 1.7T a year MORE than its tax base supports. This MUST stop and if this is how it happens, then I guess this is what it took to make the change. Stop wasting money on silly things and "services" the government has no rational business in (states have their own governments mind you) and THEN come talk to me about a tax increase to make up any necessary shortfalls.
SavageBeast··on Ask HN: Why Don't Google and Microsoft Offer an Alternative to Amazon SES?
Perhaps theres no money in it and the market need is well served today by existing companies?
SavageBeast··on Ask HN: Is it burn-out or the culture pushing me?
Take this as an outside perspective: reading the description of your work situation gave me a feeling of panic and dread. I felt it physically in my stomach. What you describe sounds awful. Whatever the reality of the situation may be, you certainly seem to hate it. Safe to assume you've tried, unsuccessfully, to adapt and make yourself like it. See if you can find a new position that genuinely excites you and let that make your decision? The tech market seems to be LOUSY at the moment sadly. Whatever the outcome, the exercise will teach you something.
SavageBeast··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
Google needs to bolster their AI story and this is good click bait. I'm not buying it personally.
SavageBeast··on 200k subscribers flee 'Washington Post' after Bezos blocks Harris endorsement
It's a free country and a guy made a decision regarding what he was willing to have HIS company say publicly. It was his call to make. His company. Privately funded. He's got the right to run it any way he sees fit. You have the right to cancel subscriptions and decline to read it. Advertisers have the right to flee. Everyone has a choice. Thats how this whole America thing works.

Besides, who was making their decision based on the Washington Post's editorial board endorsement anyhow?

SavageBeast··on 200k subscribers flee 'Washington Post' after Bezos blocks Harris endorsement
It would hurt Bezos even more if the US Govt found a way to cancel the massive use of AWS cloud services because his media arm endorsed the non-winning candidate. Given the business AWS does with the US govt, the size of his remaining stake, I can't make a good case for endorsing a candidate either.

Microsoft is always lurking around ready to push their Azure solution so not like AWS can sit back and rest easy here.

SavageBeast··on Jeff Bezos killed Washington Post endorsement of Kamala Harris
Is it censorship when your boss forbids you publishing your personal opinion as the official position of his company?

It's funny reading the comments here but has anyone considered that Bezos may in fact support Trump? Bezos is a billionaire and Harris seeks to target them to fix the deficit.

Its just possible Bezos supports Trump and it makes economic sense too, though its terribly unfashionable to come out and say such a thing.

SavageBeast··on Ask HN: How is job search going for you?
A guy I know well is a senior level recruiter at a large firm. Earlier this year his company FIRED THE ENTIRE RECRUITING DEPARTMENT.
SavageBeast··on Ask HN: How is job search going for you?
I've been passively searching, sending a resume, hitting click-to-apply here and there. For the 100 times or so Ive done this since March I've had only 2 responses and they were both automated replies of "not interested". I have a lengthy and compelling resume that has always served me well. I've never had any trouble finding a new position, save for 2008 and I still did well then even. From my perspective its as if the world has ceased to function or I've been put on some fictitious black list. I have never seen anything remotely like this.
SavageBeast··on What forms of climate protest would the public find acceptable?
People tend to have their minds made up for them by powerful interests who use money and influence to frame the narrative in their favor no doubt. In the case of climate change the fictional argument/narrative for years as been "ITS A HOAX - NOT REAL - PROPAGANDA!!!". Here in the US I don't even think idiots believe that anymore ... but here we are still.
SavageBeast··on What forms of climate protest would the public find acceptable?
"WHAT KIND of cheese is the moon made of"

Climate/Energy policy is the electorate, not the government.

You're not protesting The Government here, you're in fact protesting your neighbors who elected the politicians. It seems self evident that any policy being protested is in fact a popular policy and that protestors are the minority attempting to force their will on the majority. By this line of thinking it seems any group protesting anything is missing the point.
