SaintSeiya··on To the brain, reading computer code is not the same as reading language (2020)
Not surprising at all, reading code is not like reading prose, not even doing math, is more like a puzzle building in the brain. There's a myriad things to mentally connect and substitute/translate in realtime in order to understand what the code is doing: each function, symbol, variable, statement, abstractions all the way down that makes reading code even more complex than writing it in the first place.

SaintSeiya··on Statement from Scarlett Johansson on the OpenAI "Sky" voice
Sam messed with the wrong girl. In the end his firing was the correct thing to do. The "bad guys" of the company were doing the correct thing and like Jesus, we crucifix them.

Of course it is a monopoly, I hope they sue them to the ground and force Apple to split like Microsoft was forced long ago.

SaintSeiya··on More Americans Are Ending Up Homeless–At a Record Rate
After capitalism comes Rentism (Feudalism 2.0): the rent economy. The rich hoard the resources and means of production and instead of creating new value, they rent it to the rest (Landlords, etc). You'll own nothing and you will be happy.
SaintSeiya··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
Good: race, gender, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, etc should not be used as an advantage, or disadvantage in totally unrelated matters (education, work, etc)
SaintSeiya··on SoftBank-backed pizza startup shuts down after raising $445M
VC start-ups where never about the start-up or the product. They are designed to shut down after few years of rising capital to pay the execs ridiculous amount of money. Is about funnelling those funds to salary and bonuses before it runs dry. Rinse and repeat.
SaintSeiya··on El Paquete Semanal
The only limiting Cubans access to internet is its own government that restricts internet access, blocks many websites, monitor every citizen's social media, don't respect privacy rights, and even have laws that fines and can put in jail Cubans for posting on social media complaints against the government and its politics. The Cuban dictatorship sees internet as its enemy because they cannot control the information there. I have lived through that hell for 30 years.
SaintSeiya··on El Paquete Semanal
Indeed
SaintSeiya··on El Paquete Semanal
I've used it for many years while living in Cuba: for 1 USD I could buy it and someone come home with an external HDD and let me copy it or I would visit them and copy it myself. It was/is our main source of information away from the national media propaganda that constantly bombard us. The Cuban intelligence services quickly realize the threat of "El Paquete semanal" to bypass its communist censorship and infiltrated and threatened the main distributors to remove anything criticizing the government or news concerning what happens in Cuba. Currently is a shadow of what it was: just a collection of pirated movies, software, music and of course, infiltrated communist propaganda as well.
SaintSeiya··on Buy well, buy once
This a 1000 times. Those kind of articles are just rich people showing off, seeking attention, they must have indeed a miserably or fake life to even think that other cares about the brand of their shoes or mattresses (except other equally unhappy people. A shoe is a shoe, a mattress is a mattress, a sofa is a sofa. There's more important things in life that those details.
SaintSeiya··on Ex-ByteDance exec: Communist Party had ‘God credential’
Is always been like that under communists or socialist like regimes, privacy is not a right under those systems and government officials are omnipotent. Thinking otherwise is wishful thinking and ingenuity at best. For example in Cuba everything is being monitored by the government: physical mail, internet, cellular data, neighbour watch organizations and so on. And is the same for tourists and foreigner businesses there.

SaintSeiya··on Singh proposes corporate tax hike tied to CEO-worker pay gap
I believe that CEOS and higher execs should be first in the firing lane by law if the company do bad and not the janitors, contractors and baseline workers. They take all the glory, credit and pay for the company success and no accountability or risk at all. Now that's an incentive.
SaintSeiya··on GUI development with Rust and GTK 4
There's nothing in "modern" UI that cannot be done with Lazarus GUI Builder: Dynamic layouts? check, anchors? check, flexbox? check, custom components? check nested hierarchies of elements? HIDPI? check Vector Graphics? check Multiresolution? check and so on. All of them compiled to native (and looking native) on every platform under the sun. As said before, GUI design peaked in the 90's
SaintSeiya··on GUI development with Rust and GTK 4
At this rate programming languages will reinvent GUI builders from Delphi/Lazarus in 2050
SaintSeiya··on Sundar Pichai received $226M compensation, boosted by a triennial stock grant

SaintSeiya··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
And everyone (especially here) blaming the homeless and mentally ill people abandoned by the system. The homeless-phobia of white collar individuals is the problem.
SaintSeiya··on Ask HN: Are people still using Pascal?
Lazarus/FreePascal are AMAZING, so much better than all the subpar web/GUI development tools we have nowadays that require thousand of employees to have a chat app running (slack, twitter, etc) because humanity have a tendency to forget the past and reinvent the wheel every 60 years. Every young dev think they are smarter and can do better tan those who preceeded him and that's how you end up with thousand of unnecessary text editors and the mess of web dev tooling and frameworks. In fact is a business advantage I much rather keep it niche and not poisoned by hype machine. Keep thinking is a dead language.

Learned Delphi in 2003...it never clicked for me and went to C/C++, python, fortran, web (HTML, CSS, JS, frameworks) you name it, instead. And after many years, in 2022 I've rediscovered Lazarus/FPC and is like a revelation to me. Instant click, instant match to my development style and made me a 10X developer overnight in it. I feel the joy of programming again.

SaintSeiya··on We come to bury ChatGPT, not to praise it
Ludites strike again. ChatGPT is smarter than 99% of humanity. period.
SaintSeiya··on Cuba and the geopolitics of submarine cables
Some people here have bought into the cuba's dictatorship propaganda about free healthcare, LGBTQ rights, free education and all that lie: Get in a plane and walks its cities and towns. Doctors in Cuba earn around 40 dolars in cuban pesos a month while the government sell most of the goods at 3x-7x the price in U.S in dollars! The LGBTQ and Blacks are the people most imprisoned in Cuba for any reason. Freedom of speech? good luck, there are minors in jail for peacefully protesting in Cuba on July 11, 2021 sentenced to more than 10 years in jail.

Please inform yourself before spreading the dictatorship propaganda or you become a useful fool for its non elected government and support the misery of 11 million people.

SaintSeiya··on Okta and Auth0 Blocking Cuba, Iran, N Korea, Syria, Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk
Indeed, Cuba had more that 167000 covid deaths because they refuse to give its citizens foreign and proven vaccines. Trying to develop its own to profit selling it to another countries. of course they've failed. They refuse to provide scientific results that it's vaccines works. On top of that hospitals are empty of everything needed: no hygiene, no medicines, no even doctors because the government "exports" them for cash to other countries neglecting its own necessities and Doctors gladly agree to earn a bit more of the 50 USD dollars a moth they would earn working in cuba a MONTH
SaintSeiya··on Okta and Auth0 Blocking Cuba, Iran, N Korea, Syria, Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk
I'm a victim of communist Cuban regime and won't name here all my family has to suffer and endure under that system. People, companies and countries should not do business with dictatorial regimes, period. Regardless of any mental justification, is immoral and only support those regimes to continue exploiting and abusing its own people with your aid, greedy businessman. Then you go on with your life hypocritically saying that you care for others and care for the planet and blah blah. You only care for you and your money, you worth nothing.
SaintSeiya··on Okta and Auth0 Blocking Cuba, Iran, N Korea, Syria, Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk
There's no "blockade" of US against the dictatorial communist regime of Cuba, just an embargo. which is totally different. Proof of that is the thousand of Canadians that go to Cuba to have cheap sex with poor people including minors, something they cannot do on their country. With a blockade you could not do that. Basically the Cuban government is a mafia, that never pays back what it owes to other countries on top of intentionally impoverishing its own people and violation all sort of human rights there. making paper laws for the world while doing anything they want one on the inside to its slaves citizens. In Cuba you can go to jail for 30 years just for pacifically and silently protesting on the street with a t-shirt saying: "Patria y Vida"
