Sagat··on Sleep 'boosts brain cell numbers'
I learned early in life that it's better to work intensely and rest a lot than do more work of a lower quality. If you are sleep deprived you might miss insights and opportunities. Time is the most valuable resource in the universe: by staying awake longer you are not gaining time but shortening your available time pool in the long run.
Sagat··on Non-English-based programming languages
I don't understand the urge to create a new language to make a statement instead of trying to improve on what already exists.
Sagat··on How Poverty Taxes the Brain
One (admittedly cynical and disrespectful) hypothesis could be that some of the low-income people are low-income precisely because they disliked abstract reasoning in the first place, thus making them less likely to pursue their education.

To be honest, there are dozens of different ways to interpret this data.

Sagat··on How Poverty Taxes the Brain
Both ideas can be valid at the same time. You can know how to think or be able to autonomously change your life, but at the same time you can also be severely limited or constrained by your circumstances. Humans have a degree of agency (assuming free will) but that doesn't mean they can always realistically escape the human condition.
Sagat··on India will reportedly ban use of US e-mail services
Aside from the misleading headline, I think this is largely a symbolic move or a way to show that the government is doing something.
Sagat··on CIA is largest US spy agency, according to black budget leaked by Edward Snowden
Perhaps the real value of the leaks was to show how vulnerable the spy agencies are?
Sagat··on Privacy is not dead
I agree wholeheartedly, but that's like saying we should make everyone use condoms all the time to eliminate AIDS. A perfect solution that is unfortunately unfeasible.
Sagat··on Tell HN: Add ?share=1 to Quora URLs to display content without login
How did you figure this out?
Sagat··on Privacy is not dead
I think it's better to avoid encryption unless it's for really sensitive information or knowledge that could hurt you if broadcast. Using Tor or Truecrypt essentially paints a target on your back: you are paradoxically more likely to be under surveillance by agencies if you use them, even if you aren't concealing anything illegal or reprehensible.
Sagat··on Ask HN: How Can I leave Syria now and get asylum in Europe (Germany)
I really hope this isn't a scam. I would recommend heading to Northern European countries, specifically the Netherlands and Sweden.
Sagat··on Ignored by big companies, Mexican village creates its own mobile service
Where's Carlos Slim when you need him?
Sagat··on Does Steve Jobs know how to code?
This is probably just a side effect of the legacy that led to this film being made in the first place... the mythology surrounding Jobs.
Sagat··on Does Steve Jobs know how to code?
How much technical experience did Jobs actually have? Did he actually have a part in designing all the successful products or was he just a manager and marketer?

I don't mean to diss Jobs or imply that he wasn't important, but I don't clearly understand what his role was in Apple's success.

Sagat··on Android’s Hugo Barra Departs Google for China’s Xiaomi
What makes you think the NYTimes isn't also biased?
Sagat··on Android’s Hugo Barra Departs Google for China’s Xiaomi
I'd rather have a license violator than American tech companies selling my personal information or making it freely available to their government.
Sagat··on Harvesting solar power in space and sending it back to Earth
I know Musk is worshipped by the Hacker News crowd (and rightly so) but as with all things related to technology it's really hard to make predictions considering the fact that there could be a "black swan" type breakthrough or accidental discovery that completely changes everything.
Sagat··on Ask HN: Any Hackers Appreciate The Importance Food Has On Feeling Good?
Good luck to you and your endeavors. However I don't think promoting pseudo scientific diets such as the paleo and the gluten-free is very ethical, although it will certainly net you some extra dough.
Sagat··on Ask HN: How should I read comment threads?
My account is new but I'm a long time lurker. From personal experience it gets easier to skim over the low-impact parts after having spent some time using the site. It just happens naturally: you will soon be able to gauge a comment thread's usefulness in seconds.

To be honest I am glad the comment scores are not displayed and that there is less attention given to usernames. This prevents the hivemind-style comment ranking that is probably the single worst flaw of Reddit.

Sagat··on Ask HN: What did you want to be when you were younger? And what are you now?
When I was a child I honestly wanted to be some sort of god, watching the world go by and knowing everything. Needless to say it didn't work out exactly that way.
Sagat··on Apple seeks to trademark “startup” in Australia
In other news, Google trademarks the color blue. Smurf village foreclosed.
Sagat··on What Happens to the Brain When You Meditate
If you are interested in meditation but wary of the eastern mumbo jumbo, I suggest checking out Jon Kabat-Zinn and his works on mindfulness from a scientific perspective.
Sagat··on Ask HN: I want to take a no-tech retreat for 6 months straight. Where?
If you have never done this before, I think going on a six month trip is too ambitious. I suggest starting with two weeks first, and then continuing only if you still feel comfortable. An extreme change of lifestyle is more difficult than you think. I also think that the hermit life has been overly romanticized. It might not necessarily solve the underlying problem, which I assume is your frustration with your current routine. Not everyone is Thoreau or Emerson.

IMHO it's more worthwhile to do something active (a hiking trip with friends for example) in nature than to just isolate yourself. Some of my best memories have been week long trips in nature with a handful of close pals. I remember going almost insane with modern life and seeing all the anger and hatred fade away after a few weeks of physical activity in a new setting.

That said I think your desire to abandon technology for a while and taste freedom is laudable. Good luck to you, sir. All I ask is that you do not abandon human contact but instead seek new people to meet.

Sagat··on 'StarCraft' Gameplay Boosts Mental Flexibility, Says Study
I've also noticed from personal experience that playing video games for long lengths of time reduces your ability to concentrate on real world tasks or simple things such as reading.
Sagat··on 'StarCraft' Gameplay Boosts Mental Flexibility, Says Study
Starcraft is arguably a more difficult game due to the real-time element and the fact that the pieces aren't constrained by squares on a board (meaning there is more positional variation). As Bobby Fischer complained, chess between accomplished players can seem stale when the first twenty moves are often played from memory, following opening theory and leaving no place for experimentation.
Sagat··on The Maginot Line
This is perhaps off topic but my cousin is a tour guide in one of the villages close to the border with the Germans. Thanks to this I had the opportunity to visit some of the Maginot bunkers where the French troops waited anxiously for the invasion to come to their doorstep. A few rooms had their walls entirely covered in miniature Mickeys, giving the place an eerie and deeply melancholic atmosphere.

The point of my post is that it feels really great that France and Germany are now allies, maybe even friends. You can criticize Europe a lot but at least we aren't fighting each other and hopefully won't do so for another century. Whenever I see Americans complaining about their country turning to shit I want to tell them to focus on the fact that it could have been so much worse.

Sagat··on 'StarCraft' Gameplay Boosts Mental Flexibility, Says Study
Excellent post. I was about to mention the same things but you beat me to it.

However I think it's worth mentioning that games such as Starcraft offer the unique opportunity to taste glory (at least in Korea) at no personal risk. In the same way that Rome's gladiators had their whole lives defined and determined by the games, perhaps Starcraft players live and breathe the game and consider it their ultimate purpose? With such a mindset, analyzing costs and missed opportunities becomes irrelevant: you don't need to learn skills because you are already doing what you love.
