S0y··on Literalism plaguing today’s movies
>it was completely panned by the audiences which I think was undeserved, from a lot of people because they found it "weird" or incomprehensible.

The biggest issue with the movie is that it's boring. I personally think the weirdness wasn't used to it's full potential.

A very similar (and highly underrated) movie is Richard Kelly's Southland Tales which in my opinion is far superior and vastly more entertaining to watch. Which I guess does prove there is some merit to your point, since this movie was also panned by critics and audiences for being "way too weird".

S0y··on That Dropped Call with Customer Service? It Was on Purpose
I've never not once assumed it wasn't on purpose.

I came here to say the same thing. Red Blob Games is such a gold mine of resources for anyone looking to get into gamedev.

>In every pulse of the music, feel the zest.

Like... what?

S0y··on Suno v4.5
Honestly it baffles me at this point that Suno keeps trying to generate lyrics when everything else it generates sounds so good.

All of these example get ruined by the most simple and boring lyrics imaginable. Poetry is an art and clearly the model doesn't yet grasp all of its nuances like it does for the rest of the "composition".

At this point the only thing that gives this away as AI generated are the vocals.

S0y··on Airline demand between Canada and United States collapses, down 70%+
I'm not sure why so much of the comments are about fear of being detained at the border.

I'm Canadian, and it's pretty clear to me that most of us just don't want to give the US our business anymore. At least as long as this whole trade war thing is going on.

S0y··on Show HN: I built a tool to create polls on Bluesky
I think it's pretty unfortunate .xyz domains ended up having such a bad reputation. I know when the tld first came out it was extremely cheap ($1 for the first year?) so I suspect anyone who wanted a good deal grabbed one.

S0y··on Show HN: Audiocube – A 3D DAW for Spatial Audio
It's funny to see this now because I've been for a couple weeks looking into audio spacialization. After a lot of research and even trying to write my own spatializer plugin, I found that Game Engines have probably the most complete toolset to do this task. (Specifically I'm using Godot with https://valvesoftware.github.io/steam-audio/).

Steam audio is pretty awesome in that regards because it supports HRTF and all the physical based goodies like occlusion/reflection and sound propagation. So you can get really really immersive spatial audio.

The only downside with this solution is that you can't do offline rendering. So my question is:

can Audiocube do offline rendering? seems like it would be one killer feature for my use case.

S0y··on Show HN: K8s Cleaner – Roomba for Kubernetes
When I saw the headline I was pretty excited, but looking at your examples, I'm really curious about why you decided to make everything work via CRDs? Also having to write code inside those CRD for the cleanup logic seems like a pretty steep learning curve and honestly I'd be pretty scared to end up writing something that would delete my entire cluster.

Any reason why you chose this approach over something like a CLI tool you can run on your cluster?

S0y··on Bluesky is breaking the rules in the EU
It's a variation on "Premature Optimization Is the Root of All Evil". Focus on what actually matters for your startup. If for some reason some EU regulator actually comes knocking, you're most likely big enough to mean you've created a successful startup.

Then you just say "Sorry!" and you implement what they want.

This is probably different if your company is in the EU, but this is my North American point of view.

S0y··on Bluesky is breaking the rules in the EU
Wonder how you define "Bluesky" users in the context of ATProto. is it users of the relay? users of bsky provided PDS? users of the bluesky frontend?
S0y··on The Man Behind the Legendary Donkey Kong Country Soundtracks

S0y··on Scientists Clone Two Black-Footed Ferrets from Frozen Tissues
I think "domesticated" in this context refers to the 24 Black-Footed ferrets they initially captured.

"officials captured 24 ferrets and started a breeding program."

S0y··on How decentralized is Bluesky really?
This is also written by one of the person who helped create ActivityPub and worked along Jay Grabber to create one of the first proposals at twitter for the thing that eventually became the ATProto.
S0y··on Thoughts on Bluesky
I Appreciate you taking the time to properly respond.

>large secondary indexing services

We've talked about this before. The relay isn't secondary. proof of the matter is, bluesky last week went down because it was down.

>Anybody can run a relay or appview, same as anybody can run a PDS.

That's just saying anybody can fork the network if they're not happy. that's not very collaborative and social.

>When the software is sufficiently tested and implemented.

I would think this was a more pressing matter seeing your previous response.

>This remains true only so long as the network remains under a certain size, and your posts never go viral.

I think you're overestimating how taxing going "viral" is on an ActivityPub server. if one of your posts goes viral, it doesn't get hit for every follower you have. It'll only be a request per instance. Plus, task queues exist. Yes going viral is taxing on a server. it doesn't mean the solution is just to offload that burden to some centralized server.

>We're keeping the most valuable part of the system -- account ownership -- from having its costs bundled with application ops.

Except the tradeoff is relying on a handful of large organization that have the resources to burden the cost of running a network. Those networks then decide who gets to post or not. account ownership isn't worth much if you can't speak anywhere. If I were to get banned from the bsky relay, I'd be essentially barred from interacting with anyone on the ATmosphere until someone else came along and created a new relay or appview. On activitypub, maybe mastodon.social doesn't like what I say so they ban my instance. But at least I can still interact with the thousand of other instances that exist. Now you can say, don't be an ass and you won't get banned, and I agree. But when you've created a system where only large organizations have the capacity to run a network, Maybe now I get banned because Coca-Cola decided they didn't want anyone saying Pepsi tasted better on their network.

>In fact, I would argue that binding user accounts to individual application instances & their governance like AP does is a massive mistake.

I think we'll agree to disagree on this one.

As always Appreciate the debates pfraze, hopefully these conversation help users decide which platform they like the best.

S0y··on Thoughts on Bluesky
If you actually cared about having a meaningful conversation you wouldn't be tip-toeing around my arguments. There's clear dissonance between the words you're speaking and the actual reality of how ATProto/Bsky works. You say you have the same motives yet this is not what the technology shows.

>your argument right now is akin to saying the Web isn’t decentralized because it uses search engines.

Is that really all I said?

S0y··on Thoughts on Bluesky
>AP doesn't have the facilities for global aggregation which can power search, discovery, algorithms, and metrics.

Very nice way to say "AP isn't centralized enough".

>We felt that strong account portability was an extremely important feature of the system, to ensure that users don't get locked into a specific host. AP's redirection model of account migration concerned us.

What's your current timeline to start accepting incoming account migrations back into the bluesky hosted PDS? When will account migrations officially be a recommended operation? Source: https://github.com/bluesky-social/pds/blob/main/ACCOUNT_MIGR...

>We're concerned about the cost structure of AP. We're concerned that self-hosters are going to pay a prohibitively high price for virality. This is why we designed the network to avoid placing heavy load on PDS.

First of all, self hosting an ActivityPub service is not prohibitively expensive, heck expensive just isn't even a word a would use at all. On the other hand, what's expensive is the cost of hosting the bluesky relay. What you're essentially doing is just taking on the burden/cost of data processing and hiding it from the end user. The fact that ATProto requires a relay is at complete odds with the premise of decentralization and federation. You're no more decentralized than google search giving you results from different websites.

>I know that the AP world is frustrated with the competition between the protocols and suspicious of how we've chosen to do things. It's a shame because I think we're after similar things, and hold similar values. We didn't set out to sabotage the AP world; we just felt like there were important changes that needed to happen for this mission to work.

We're frustrated with bluesky describing itself as decentralized and federated when it isn't. Look, I get it, You guys are trying to run a business. You can't control ActivityPub so you made ATProto. It's your thing so you can make what you want with it. You can make it open-source, but at the end of the day, you guys decide. Just be honest about it.

S0y··on Thoughts on Bluesky
I can tell you that personally, if Bluesky wasn't so miss-reported as being federated and decentralized I wouldn't be caring as much as I did.

I'm happy that bluesky is successful. what I'm not happy about is that it's claiming to be something it isn't and in doing so, undermining all the work people have put into an ecosystem that is TRULY federated and decentralized.

S0y··on Thoughts on Bluesky
>To solve this, they should close sign ups. Why haven't they done that yet?

They do periodically closes signups.

>I would like to think this is true, but there are just too many frustration stories of confusion of 'which instance' to choose, losing posts due to admins (and followers) shutting down instances and having to tell your followers where to go next.

Except on bluesky, you don't even get to be confused because it doesn't support any kinds of moves!

It's pretty simple really, Bluesky hasn't magically figured out how to make proper federation work. they just say they're federated but in reality they're really just centralized.

S0y··on All the data can be yours: reverse engineering APIs
I recently wanted to reverse engineer some Websocket packets for a game I was playing. I used BurpSuite as a proxy to bypass the SSL encryption. It also has a pretty handy tool that will monitor all websocket traffic.

After that I used ImHex, pretty much exactly like in that blog to reverse engineer the websocket packets. The DSL is a little finicky but once you wrap your head around it, it`s very nice and powerful.

S0y··on Bluesky's AT Protocol: Pros and Cons for Developers
>I think these possibilities are some of the strongest reasons to be intrigued by AT Protocol

Genuine question, considering you can already do what you're talking about with ActivityPub what makes you stick around on ATproto/Bsky?

S0y··on Bluesky's at Protocol: Pros and Cons for Developers
I think the fact that devs even have to think about using "each others schemas" is a pretty big flaw in the system. It would definitely make ATProto look a lot better if it had a standardized way for all of its app to talk to each other. You don't want devs to have to implement new schemas for each and every new app that pops up on AT just so they can communicate with each other.

Like, it would be pretty dang cool if you could follow a WhiteWind blog from your Bluesky account. Honestly I'm a bit confused as to why this isn't a priority for the Bsky team.

S0y··on Bluesky's at Protocol: Pros and Cons for Developers
>Right now, there aren’t a lot of other apps in the ATmopshere, but there are experiments happening. There’s a blogging tool called WhiteWind, a Reddit clone called frontpage.fyi, and an events app called Smoke Signal. More will follow, I’m sure.

The unfortunate thing about ATproto is that even tho there are these apps that are built on top of it. None of these app actually talk to each other. Bluesky the app has no idea what you're posting on WhiteWind and vice versa. This is the BIG advantage ActivityPub has over AT. A Mastodon account can follow accounts on any ActivityPub compatible server and they're able to talk to each other. You can follow a peertube channel or some AP enabled wordpress blog and it'll all be visible and intractable inside your Mastodon feed.

At the moment, ATproto to me, seems a lot more like a glorified oAuth system than anything else. It's a lot like using your google account to login on an app and then have your data stored in google drive (your PDS).

Little nitpick about your website.

the " Trusted by" and "Backed and Advised by" scrolling marquee is WAY too fast.

I'm not sure if it's because they scroll in opposite directions or just the speed, but they make me pretty dizzy. I'm not particularly sensitive to these things so I imagine it's even worse for people with motion sensitivity.
