RyanOD··on Tesla registrations crash 17% in Europe as BEV market surges 14%
I second this. Is there anyone who actually believes Optimus is going to be a success and has any sort of data to back that up?

I'm not in robotics, but I look at humanoid robots and, while incredible examples of engineering know-how, they seem to be a long way from useful in commercial applications. Am I jhust ignorant of their true value? Seems like all I ever see them doing is parkour.

Love that they took the time to draft a kind letter and let you down easy. Maxis cared.

I feel this way about many such networks. We avoid networked appliances, garage doors, door locks, external cameras, etc as often as we can.
RyanOD··on AI-First Company Memos
Unfortunately, I would expect the boss to say, "hey, since you're all going to be so much more productive working in the factory, we'll give you all 10x the shoes to repair".

Recently upgraded. Ughhh...it's just so god-awful terrible.
RyanOD··on Nvidia shares are down after report that its OpenAI investment stalled
Yes to this. Take no alternative actions. Just keep investing and don't watch the market for a year or two.
RyanOD··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
I'm terrible at this because I just can't handle extended lulls in conversations with anyone who isn't a close friend. As a result, I talk too much and that's the end of building a friendship. Sigh...

RyanOD··on Show HN: I made a memory game to teach you to play piano by ear
Sounds like a good idea. Right now, I'm splitting my time between drill based content (Bartok, Gurlitt, Kunz, etc), beginner classical pieces, and the occasional blues.

Funny, but in church, I spend more time than maybe I should sight reading hymns during the sermon. :)

RyanOD··on Show HN: I made a memory game to teach you to play piano by ear
I think it depends on your end goal.

I have a great ear and am terrible at reading sheet music. Fine if you aspire to be a rock guitarist. Not so fine if you aspire to be a classical pianist.

Funny, but I'm final tired of my poor sight reading and have set a goal for 2025 to average one hour of piano playing from sheet music per day.

And I agree...a "mess around" mode on the app would be great. Feels almost punitive when I make a mistake.

RyanOD··on Show HN: I made a memory game to teach you to play piano by ear
I took several years of Suzuki piano method when I was a kid. Suzuki focuses initially on developing the ear.

During lessons, we did this kind of stuff all the time. I would close my eyes and my instructor would play a series of notes and I would need to play them back by ear.

I would also listen to whatever song I was learning before I went to be bed and again when I woke up in the morning, visualizing every note.

Give me a guitar today and I can work out pretty much any song I hear on the radio in under a minute just by listening.

EDIT: To be clear, I also played a LOT of guitar and piano. Ear training was in addition to the hard work of becoming a player.

RyanOD··on A tab hoarder's journey to sanity
Every couple weeks, I click the red "x" and close all my tabs and start fresh.

This approach has never once caused me any issues...and it sure feels good.

"we did not want to require our users have accounts on any 3rd party platforms in order to access our postings"

1000x yes to this! It can be really frustrating when a link takes me to FB, TW, IG, etc. - none of which I use.

RyanOD··on Show HN: I created a tool to design and create foamcore inserts for boardgames
Yes to this.

Why should more than one person create a layout for Risk, for example? Start storing these in a library, bearing in mind that most games have multiple releases with their own specs. Think of a site like Thingiverse.

RyanOD··on Games’ affordance of childlike wonder and reduced burnout risk in young adults
How many hours does your job and commute require?

I'd genuinely like to understand a job that is so time consuming that a person wouldn't be able to cook dinner. That doesn't seem ok to me.

RyanOD··on Learning Fortran (2024)
First language I learned while in college in the 1990s. While I enjoyed the class, I have a funny picture of me kicking the FORTRAN book across my dorm room after I turned in my final project.
RyanOD··on Is it a bubble?
Sure...that's why it's important to diversify investments. For every Pets.com, hopefully you have a Google in your portfolio.

Or, you skip all that and just put it all in an S&P 500 fund.

RyanOD··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
For ideas that are already well established, you can ask it to evaluate an idea against generally accepted best practices. I don't have a background in game design and I'm more of a hobby developer so I used to do this when I was building retro game clones.
RyanOD··on What will enter the public domain in 2026?
Read this to my daughters. What a great story! Wish I had known of it as a kid.
RyanOD··on Stop Putting Your Passwords into Random Websites (Yes, Seriously, You Are the PR
I make up all my passwords on the spot and never write them down. Every service I use has a different password I may or may not remember. If I need to reset it, so be it. I consider changing my passwords frequently a good thing. Yes, it slows me down from time to time, but whatever.

And for something I use every day like email, I just leave myself signed in on my main devices. But eventually that even gets reset...probably a few times a year.

RyanOD··on Microsoft makes Zork open-source
When I was around six years old, my older brothers convinced me computer games were written in paragraph form. I wrote a lot of games! Asteroids went something like this, "You fly around in a ship that is a triangle. When you shoot asteroids they break up into smaller asteroids."

My brothers got a lot of laughs out of those "programs".

Fast-forward 45 years and whose laughing now?! :)

RyanOD··on Microsoft makes Zork open-source
This literally gave me goosebumps. It's hard to convey how much Zork (and the rest of the Infocom portfolio) means to me. This was my first entry into gaming on my Commodore 64.

For anyone out there who had anything to do with bringing these games to market, know that you impacted so many lives in a fun, meaningful, heartfelt way.

RyanOD··on I think nobody wants AI in Firefox, Mozilla
For me, it's exactly what you said...asking specific questions. That's what I use search engines for and much of the time I'm online, it's asking questions and seeking answers. And, as near as I can tell, AI does that very well and very fast.
RyanOD··on The Useful Personal Computer
We had a Commodore 64 and an Amiga back in the 80s. I used to type up books reports and research papers which was really nice.

Once, I got in trouble and had to go home and write sentences. I used the word processor to copy/paste the sentence 500 times (or whatever it was). The teacher was dubious of this, but not fully understanding personal computers, gave in and accepted it.
