Rumudiez··on Waymo Premier
that's crazy. my 2005 volvo, 1991 nissan, and 1986 toyota altogether cost me a little over $1k per year (mostly insurance) and it was less than $10k total to buy them all. goes to show average financial literacy in the US. people won't save a few grand for a used car (or take out a small loan even!) and then pay 10x the cost for new

Daydreaming or zoning out while driving is reckless behavior. You should be fully occupied by the task at hand. If you aren't, find a parking lot to doze off in instead please, or call an Uber
Rumudiez··on I want to live like Costco people
right, it buys Costco people. my local Haggens is a veritable paradise by comparison to the overcrowded warehouse that's too far away and closes too early to shop at after work. don't get me started on Fred Meyer clientele
Rumudiez··on Tech job relocation market is recovering. The competition is growing faster
even when they make 6 figures, live in a tiny apartment with no furniture, and send back their whole paycheck in remittances each month?

or do you mean the old motel in the scenic locale you used to go as a kid, that has since been bought up by immigrants, has AI art peeling off the walls now and has gone without basic maintenance for 30 years?

Rumudiez··on Anatomy of the .claude/ folder
I thought that was supposed to be “decision tree” but otherwise, totally agree the exact words don’t actually matter all that much in most instances. I copy-paste templated prompts and every now and then notice some baffling grammar on my side after the fact… claude doesn’t mind
Rumudiez··on No one is happy with NASA's new idea for private space stations
Do you have any grounds to deny it? If it were easy it would have been done already
Rumudiez··on Porting 100k lines from TypeScript to Rust using Claude Code in a month
if you do enough planning up front, you can get a swarm of agents to run for hours on end completing all the tasks autonomously. I have a test project that uses github issues as a kanban board, I iterate with the primary chat interface to refine a local ROADMAP.md file and then tell it "get started"

it took several sessions of this to refine the workflow docs to something claude + subagents would stick to regarding branching strategy and integration requirements, but it runs well enough. my main bottleneck now is CI, but I still hit the weekly limit on claude max from just a handful of these sessions each week, and it's about all the spare time I have for manual QA anyway

Rumudiez··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
marketers are not designers and vice versa. of course the press release is going to be melodramatic no matter what the designers thought, or were told
Rumudiez··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%

You have a real obligation to learn how to drive. Your examples indicate neglect to take the safety of your family and others’ seriously

Rumudiez··on Should CSS be constraints?
(1) could be answered with container query units. Set `container-type: inline-size;` on the parent element (falls back to the whole viewport if unset), then use, e.g., `width: 50cqw; height: 50cqh` in children. The value is a percentage of the given axis
Rumudiez··on When 'perfect' code fails
this issue was caused by a framework that's trying to do too much, relying on "magic" interfaces to supposedly reduce developer burden. the function is very unambiguously written and the language did nothing wrong

I also support using whatever language you and your team prefer when you can. that's the glory of backend: no restrictions on what you can run. but sometimes you need to write client software, and those are strictly easier to manage in the platform's native tongue: Swift, Kotlin, JS, and so on

Rumudiez··on Two Amazon delivery drones crash into crane in commercial area of Tolleson, AZ
The code, all of it, is just an implementation detail. All that matters is real world behavior and its consequences.

I've been my own manager more than once and on teams from a few folks to a couple dozen in size. Rigid schedules and expectations absolutely make me less productive. My last 2 startups were chock full of fast paced, high quality work that got us off the ground and up to hundreds of thousands of users with me as the single engineer building apps for web, iOS and Android by myself. That is, until we hired engineering managers who tried too hard to get a glimpse inside my head, after which productivity dropped off a cliff. My current startup now has around 10 app devs and it feels like we deliver fewer features over longer timelines at a lower bar for quality than ever.
Rumudiez··on The bloat of edge-case first libraries
Yep, I’ve seen this in Swift with a dozen overloads for functions and class initializers to support umpteen similar, but different, types as input. Sloppy schema design reveals itself in combinatorial explosions of type conversions
Rumudiez··on Show HN: Hacker News em dash user leaderboard pre-ChatGPT
The rule is spaces on both sides of an en dash – like so – or an em dash without any spaces—like this. Important to note the US keyboard layout does not have either of these or the minus glyph, just the hyphen, and it’s unadvisable to mix multiple styles
Rumudiez··on The cost of transparency: Living with schizoaffective disorder in tech
That post is all about money. The author came into someone else’s project, acts miffed that he isn’t treated as a founder right off the bat, and then complains endlessly about where the donations went. Even belaboring the “dishonesty” of rounding 28k to 30k. I won’t read to the end because clearly this person has major faults of their own and just wrote an attack without making any reflections on himself

Rumudiez··on Building better AI tools
I want to believe there will be a small contingent of old schoolers basically forver, even if it only shrinks over time. maybe newcomers or experienced devs who want to learn to more, or how to do what the machine is doing for them

I think it'll be like driving: the automatic transmission, power brakes, and other tech made it more accessible but in the process we forgot how to drive. that doesn't mean nobody owns a manual anymore, but it's not a growing % of all drivers

they only posted one photo in the post, but going off of that it's still an easy match based on streetview imagery. furthermore, the AI just identified the license plate and got lucky that photographer lives in a populous area, making it more prominent in the training data and therefore more likely to be found (even though it was off by 200 miles on its first guess)

Rumudiez··on Show HN: A website/app to help manage your game library
Okay, now that it's darker out I can see the game covers faintly. I guess I'd suggest making it a little brighter since it's hard to make out detail in daylight if you want it to come through, not a big deal if it looks how you want already

I also see it's actually a png on desktop and jpg on mobile. For an image of this size, I don't feel like png is a good fit without significant optimizations like restricting colors to a very limited palette. Baking the underlying background color into it as a jpg, like you did for mobile, could help reduce the file size quite a bit for a lot less effort. I converted them at 90% quality and ran them through ImageOptim which got the file size down to 115KB for the desktop image and 88KB for mobile

Sorry for the AI comment. I noticed Tailwind and NextJS while inspecting the images and jumped to conclusions

Rumudiez··on Show HN: A website/app to help manage your game library
why is the black background a 1.5MB JPG[1]? and it even has a responsive counterpart[2] that's half a megabyte for mobile. surely it could have just been `background: #000`? I didn't go looking for issues, I just noticed the image load in jaggedly (not progressively encoded) and couldn't believe my browser would do that for a solid color fill. did you use AI to make the website?
