RodericDay··on Some Uber Employees Balk at Travis Kalanick’s Exit
Uber is not just like every other company. That's seriously some "boys will be boys" type thinking to excuse the messed up behavior of a certain few.
RodericDay··on Verizon is killing Tumblr’s fight for net neutrality
The fallacy is "it's just a matter of resources, so those resources will advantage them in some other way if not this one". It's a bad argument.
RodericDay··on Verizon is killing Tumblr’s fight for net neutrality
Facebook competitor may be unlikely, but newspapers striking local deals with Facebook vs. newspapers which don't, is likely.

It's a huge, huge fallacy to claim "this thing would happen regardless, so who cares how difficult we make it for it to happen". Your mind is wrong.

I'm proud of India for rejecting Zuckerberg's ploy, and I wish Peru was wise enough to do the same.

RodericDay··on Verizon is killing Tumblr’s fight for net neutrality
I was just in Lima, Peru. This is what you see if you're on Facebook on someone's phone (I was tethering), and click a link that takes you outside of Facebook:

What do you think your chances of competing against Facebook, or Facebook-based businesses, are, when clients see this before accessing your site?

RodericDay··on 14 People Make 500K Tons of Steel a Year in Austria
The Democratic party does not credibly propose any of those things. Hillary Clinton explicitly rebuked Bernie Sanders' campaign promises with regards to health and education.

We have not yet seen a candidate running on a socialist proposal coupled with even mediocre or passable mediatic support. Every time a socialist-leaning candidate pops up, moneyed interests work really, really hard against them. However, it's getting better and better (see: Corbyn in UK).

It'll come. People will vote themselves, not bread and circuses, but health and education. And democracy and markets, as opposing decision-making mechanisms, will clash.

finally a good plaintext candidate for the thinking emoji shortcut!

I always liked this Gore Vidal quote:

> The political-science professors, perfectly sane men, look at me with wonder when I talk about the ruling class in America. They say, “You are one of those conspiracy theorists. You think there’s a headquarters and they get together at the Bohemian Grove and run the United States.” Well, they do get together at the Bohemian Grove and do a lot of picking of Secretaries of State, anyway. But they don’t have to conspire. They all think alike. It goes back to the way we’re raised, the schools we went to–after all, I’m a reluctant member of this group. You don’t have to give orders to the editor of The New York Times. He is in place because he will respond to a crisis the way you want him to, as will the President, as will the head of the Chase Manhattan Bank. http://davidsheff.com/article/gore-vidal/

The interview it comes from, in Playboy, is pretty great. They're talking about how that now that the commie threat is spent, they'll need a new threat to keep people scared (they, as in the, the conspiratorial they). He jokes about Nicaraguan imperialism. We now know what we got instead.

RodericDay··on Connect: behind the front-end experience
It's neat and all but I feel like there's something so utterly unnecessary and gratuitous about beautiful bouncy payment web widgets.

Makes me sad that CSS programmers make truckloads of money while other workers in the economy rot.

RodericDay··on Over time, leaders lose mental capacities
I hate dealing in stereotypes, but even if we stick to stereotypes, the idea that men are "less emotional" than women is hilarious.

Two stereotypical emotional memes for men:

- men think with their libido, and will throw away their life for a shag

- men have fragile egos, and will pick up a fight over a perceived injury to their honor

The sexist stereotype "women are emotional" just doesn't work.

RodericDay··on Canadian Tech Is Having a Moment
Very very fun.

You don't get paid like an ultra rockstar that lives in a different strata of society than other people, but it being Montreal where rent is affordable and events like the International Jazz Fest, Tam Tams, or drinking wine in one of the many parks is free, and you move all over the island with high quality public transport, it's for the better.

However, it feels a little bit hollow sometimes and like not a lot of real tech work is being done. Lots of stuff geared towards yuppies and going to coffee shops and renting pads and shopping, not a lot of really groundbreaking stuff.

There's gaming companies (eg: Ubisoft), old ex-startups (eg: Shopify), new startups (eg: Transit), Google and Microsoft have offices here, big investment into machine learning research in local universities, etc. It's a college town... for 5 universities... in the downtown of a great city.

There's probably better places to go if you want a super prestige-track career, but I doubt there's many places that are more fun or better balanced.

RodericDay··on Telegram founder: US intelligence tried to bribe us to weaken encryption
tbh, people like tptacek and his buddies have a clear agenda and attitude of their own. I'm definitely not sated by their pronouncements alone.
RodericDay··on New features you can't use unless you are in Python 3
This shouldn't be downvoted, it's a legit question.

I hear some people really really prefer `print as statement`, but I've never seem them in real life.

RodericDay··on How Much Do You Know About Solving Global Warming?
Maybe it's just me, but I think this test avoids some questions I expected there, and does so in a very contrived manner.

"Switch to Electric" is favorably compared to "Hitch a Ride", and then "Hop on the Bus" is unfavorably compared to "Ships ahoy".

The overall impression I take is something like: "just wait and see, some guys are working on hard engineering problems wrt ships and planes, you save for your Tesla while eating plants and you'll be doing your part".

RodericDay··on Anonymized list of engineering salaries from bootcamp grads
I don't have a menu at all. Other comment worked though, thanks!
RodericDay··on Anonymized list of engineering salaries from bootcamp grads
Pardon my ignorance of the google ecosystem but... how can I download this spreadsheet?
RodericDay··on The electric car has dropped out of favor in Denmark
People don't like to be reminded that buying mansions with solar shingles and electric sports cars are far more about making consumers feel good than about meaningfully saving the planet in any sense.

Trickle down environmentalism is just like regular trickle down economics.

RodericDay··on Social media bubbles may threaten democracy
This isn't a bingo it's just a checklist.
RodericDay··on Show HN: Grid-based window tiling for X11 with powerful keyboard controls
The extra level of multi nested grids etc is cool, but honestly I get by just fine with Spectacle.
RodericDay··on The Clintons Had Slaves
Preempting the question "what is the relevance to hackernews?" --

Outside of the fact that politics is always important for everything, this is crucially about a "hack" in the 13th amendment, that allowed a backdoor so that slavery could continue, ostensibly "smoothed out", rather than a true abolishment as often portrayed.

RodericDay··on The future of MDN: a focus on web docs
Using DDG is an awesome, ethical thing to do. The fact that it's actually got perks over Google is just the cherry on top.
RodericDay··on The future of MDN: a focus on web docs
If DuckDuckGo is your default search engine, you can just do

    !mdn <search query>
and get the MDN search results page.

You can also do the same for stuff like

    !gweek <search query>
And get google results limited to the last week (or StartPage ones if you swap the g for and s).

It's amazing.

RodericDay··on JSC loves ES6
I'm one of those people. I don't like mucking around in the app-store, but I'd save a shortcut.
RodericDay··on How Twitter Is Being Gamed to Feed Misinformation
Absolutely not true. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy, usually regurgitated by people who don't discuss politics much.
RodericDay··on Operation Car Wash: Investigating corruption at Brazilian oil company Petrobras
Dude, your posting history makes you seem like an ultra die-hard libertarian:

https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=andrenth

You may want to check on that before you accuse the notoriously anti-Corbyn Guardian of having some kind of "Worker Party" allegiance.

Seems more like they're being even handed, while you absolutely need Roussef and co to be considered worse than capitalist-style corruption.

I think you may like it.

RodericDay··on 1Password Travel Mode: Protect your data when crossing borders
If you, as an innocent person, don't refuse to have your belongings inspected, you participate in making belonging-inspection-refusal into a great heuristic for determining guilt.

This is a form of "citizen duty".
