deciding when free speech crosses a line into a nexus to criminal activity like fraud, libel, conspiracy, incitement, disturbing the peace is hard. deciding when it crosses a line into simply violating community standards designed to further the goals of the community and forum owners, and violates the right or expectation of others for civil discourse is also hard.
it's a bias-variance problem, you can ban the n-word but people find other ways to make people unwelcome, a demagogue can say they are just asking questions when they are pretty plainly trying to start a riot and get people harassed and swatted and feel like they will suffer violence if they disagree.
I don't see anything inherently wrong with using AI tools to help make decisions like that. all that AI that controls what shows up in your feed is already implicitly doing that. inherently when one guy thinks he's making a stand for free speech, someone else is going to think he's coddling extremists who are strategically flooding the zone with bullshit, driving out civil discourse and worse.
doesn't it infringe my rights if people use my site and my money to harass people or to spread stuff that is against my economic interest, religion, values, etc. or that I just don't like and didn't intend?
if people are going to run around using AI to spread deepfake ragebait memes, shouldn't I get to enforce policies using the same technology they use to pollute the space?
the Dagster folks have some comparisons, of course there are popular modern alternatives other than Dagster
once you get into the complexities that apply to investors and rich people, income is a slippery concept. you have a hot dog stand and pay yourself 10k, is it salary, dividend, capital gain, return of capital? maybe you didn't even make money after depreciation, inflation.
"Income, like sausages... are esteemed most by those who know least about what goes into them." - paraphrasing Alvin Toffler
That's why most economists prefer VAT, simple tax based on the value of work when the work is monetized at any stage of production. (you still need to deal with progressivity, income from capital gains / interest / dividends / wealth creation, the cash flows that cause those to arise are subject to VAT if not the animal spirits but that's another matter)
any recommendations on how to buy one? e.g. 24GB model, any particular model to run LLMs? what is the biggest baddest LLM you can run on a single card?
have been thinking about it but was sticking with cloud/colab for experiments so far.

A good leader is someone you'll follow into battle, because you want to do right by the team, and you know the leader and the team will do right by you. Whatever 'leadership' is, Sam Altman has it and the board does not.

The board could have said, hey we don't like this direction and you are not keeping us in the loop, it's time for an orderly change. But they knew that wouldn't go well for them either. They chose to accuse Sam of malfeasance and be weaselly ratfuckers on some level themselves, even if they felt for still-inscrutable reasons that was their only/best choice and wouldn't go down the way it did.
Sam Altman is the front man who 'gave us' ChatGPT regardless of everything else Ilya and everyone else did. A personal brand (or corporate) is about trust, if you have a brand you are playing a long-term game, a reputation converts prisoner's dilemma into iterated prisoner's dilemma which has a different outcome.
I wrote a long-form version of this bullshit here - https://druce.ai/2023/09/bullshit
On one axis we have the truth value of a statement, on the other, the intent (sadly no tables on HN)
Good intent
- Factually truthful: 'Roses are red'
- No inherent truth Value: Maybe surreal humor, like 'this statement is humor'
- Factually false: Satire, parody, sarcasm, 'Great HN comment Einstein'
Bullshit: Statements for effect, indifferent to truth value
- True: 'More doctors smoke Camels'; 'My response to the Covid pandemic was amazing!';
- No truth value - ill-formed nonsense, oxymoron, non sequitur or empty puffery: 'Our Founding Fathers under divine guidance created a new beginning for mankind.'; 'Starbucks provides an immersive ultra-premium coffee-forward experience.'; 'Nobody’s bigger or better at the military than I am.'
- False: 'Obama was born in Kenya'; 'We had the biggest inauguration crowd ever.'
Bad intent, to defraud or mislead:
- True: 'I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky'
- No truth value: 'We’re not going to sit here and listen to you bad-mouth the United States of America!'
- False: 'Clinically proven to boost genes and make your skin visibly younger in just a week'; Gish Gallop
Of course this is mostly bullshit:
- Hard to discern intent when something turns out to be false, was Bush's WMD claim bullshit, or a lie; similarly Obama, 'if you like your insurance, you can keep it'. One man's benign public health simplification about masks or food pyramids is another's nefarious conspiracy.
- Even hard science isn't free of bullshit, Feynman's cargo cult speech notwithstanding, any sufficiently complex science and engineering devolves to some amount of cargo cult bullshit in practice
- Let's not even get started on organized religion, Washington and apple trees and whatnot. Communication takes place on multiple levels, fruit flies like a banana, something can be bullshit on one level and good (or bad) intent on another.
In the words of George Carlin, "Bullshit is the glue that binds us as a nation." Or Napoleon, "History is a set of lies agreed upon."
GPT's ability to bullshit at a human level is a truly monumental achievement.
easier monetary policy creates bubbly valuations and probably increases wealth inequality.
but inflation is complicated. a decent number of not-that-rich people are 80+% levered and see debts evaporate, and not that many really rich people are that levered. on the other hand a decent number of not-that-rich people have fixed-income type assets and receivables, pensions etc., rich people tend to have more equity. unexpected inflation increases the risk premium and term premium and tends to reduce real asset values. things like startups and risk equities and long bonds are a bet on a distant future and people don't like to take those big risks when financial conditions are in turmoil. inflation might increase wealth inequality because there are big winners and losers but it might penalize capital so much that it might reduce overall inequality. in a way inflation negates easy monetary policy by canceling its real boost and making it only illusory nominal growth, and plants the seed for higher interest rates and risk premia. big inflationary surprise years like 73-74 and 78-79 were big interest rate surprise years and pretty catastrophic for stocks. capital kind of hates inflation so it's probably not that great for capital. there's also the taxation issue, a lot of inflation gets recognized as income when it's just nominal and not real gains.

it would be interesting if the entire lab notebook record was available to such an AI and cryptographically signed and dated. that would potentially prevent people from doctoring images and data, as has been recently alleged on multiple occasions.
it would be interesting if that AI was trained to do causal inference and do-calculus, and every paper published generated an incremental update to an automatically constructed meta-analysis and systematic research review.
keep going and make a large body of real-world e.g. medical data available to the AI, and every interaction could be an addition to the clinical trial data. and then make the AI able to generate new hypotheses and directions for experimentation to test those hypotheses.
I was wondering if maybe the state of data feeds has changed, seems like there are so many competing data feeds now - https://docs.openbb.co/terminal/usage/guides/api-keys
but one does wonder if they are same quality as expensive professional feeds like bloomberg, keeping up with splits and ticker changes etc.
that being said ... not long ago I was waiting pretty late, like midnight, express train stopped on local platform with no indication or announcement whatsoever and I ran and missed it , had to wait 10 minutes for next train. that was some BS.
and there is the possibility if you're switching, that they hold one train a bit longer and don't ensure you get same connection at 42. but pretty rare, they are decent at holding for connection except in rush when trains come super frequently.
it's a bit of a quirk and not seeing why it gets people super riled (other than my late night CF)
It is a weird quirk built into the system but not too many situations where it slows anyone down since 42 is the next / previous station and you will almost always end up connecting to the same train you would have at Penn?
I guess there could be some situation where uptown local and express pull in to Penn at same time and you would be able to make a connection but then one is held and they don't connect at 42. But unusual and they run pretty frequently on 1-2-3?
wealth can take many forms including human capital, social capital, future earning power, you can be wealthy in some way and yet cash-poor
- one of the apparently ignorant masses
You can of course run Llama2 in Azure, but you can't host OpenAI models in AWS
It's only going to get more impossible. All that VC money going in at 100x revenue needs a return and they aren't going leave money on the table with full-featured open-source or CentOS type alternatives.
All those data engineering startups, database providers with 'open-source' + cloud hosting, the 'open-source' is going to be just 'open' enough to claim there is some fallback for someone else to pick up the mantle using the community version, if the cloud version gets enshittified beyond reason.
You're not going to even be able to run the full-featured software version on-prem because the economics of cloud are so much better.
Unless you are writing and compiling your own code you are going to be out of luck if your privacy standard is that high. That war has been lost. And Web3 sure ain't gonna save you either.
or an argument on efficiency grounds, that the payment system is an insufficiently effective form of annihilation?
What does it make owners of platforms who decide with more or less absolute authority what is acceptable on their platforms?
As software platforms 'eat the world?'
