Rinzler89··on EU: Definition of "potential terrorists" opens door to broad information-sharing
Of course countries in Eastern Europe like Poland can be safer. Who knew that being selective with who you let in and unwelcoming to people who enter your country illegally instead of giving them generous welfare can make it safer? That's like being surprised that standing in the rain makes you wet.

Unfortunately promoting strictly enforcing immigration laws and borders makes you a right wing supremacist in the other progressive EU counties so they need to make themselves unsafe in order to virtue signal to the world how welcoming and tolerant they are.

>I've never actually _seen_ anyone use an iPad by writing on it

I go to a cafe in the university district where a lot of young students hang out and see many hand writing and drawing on their iPads.

Rinzler89··on EU: Definition of "potential terrorists" opens door to broad information-sharing
Unfortunately when crowds go berserk and riots happen, it's very difficult to get solid proof on who exactly started it and identify that person since the tend to cover their faces.

And even if by a miracle you do manage to get the face of that person and submit it to law enforcement, if they happened to be part of one of the intelligence agencies like it was in my country, the government would turn a blind eye and pretend they cant identify that person in order to protect them.

Throwing LEOs under the bus, even if they're guilty of something, is not something most government leaders are rushing to do since they need LEOs on their side in order to enforce the laws and maintain their positions in society, and it's not a good idea to piss off those in charge of the guns and surveillance capabilities and turn them against you.

>Sometimes they are not protesters

I don't have the source at hand but I remember reading that in Germany, plain clothes police inserted themselves into the group of climate protestors and start throwing rocks at the riot police, in order to give them legal justification to engage the protestors.

Don't know if this is the truth, but since this has also happened in my country in the past, I wouldn't be surprised that it is. Governments and the ruling elite can and will always find ways to legally justify their actions against citizens they consider a threat. The US had the Pinkertons (who stil exist today) who did similar actions but for the private sector.

Rinzler89··on Microsoft: 'ever present' AI assistants are coming
Maybe, maybe not, I'd say that depends on a lot of factors from social class, wealth, education, life experiences and upbringing, but either way the truth is that all people, liberal or conservative, don't like being lectured on biases, religion, politics, sexuality and morals by other people or strangers, and least of all by corporations which are incredibly hypocritical and don't practice what they preach for one second and just push their own agendas instead masquerading as morals.

I don't want to be lectured on morals and values by the likes of Apple or Amazon who's factories and warehouses are worked on by modern slaves with suicide nets or who need to piss in bottles, and who shit on the EU for being regulatorily unreasonable on user rights, when they bend over backwards for the CCP.

I don't want to be lectured on diversity and inclusivity by the likes of Disney who is covering up or shrinking the black actors in their movie posters for China.

You see, people don't want to be lectured on morality by these ultra wealthy hypocrites who have no morals, and who's only goal is to squeeze more money from people for themselves and their shareholders at the expense of society and the environment. They need to just focus on the products and shut up about lecturing people.

>We generally don't use them by _writing_ on them

Writing and drawing on tablets is actually one of their major selling points in replacing computers and paper notebooks, versus just buying laptops with flippable touch screens which were the tablets of the past.

It's not that they can't, it's that they won't. It's malice, not incompetence.
Rinzler89··on Microsoft: 'ever present' AI assistants are coming
A lot of Microsoft's or Bill Gate's predictions turned out correct, they just weren't the ones to make those visions happen.

Gates said about 30 years ago that we'd all be having internet connected computers in our pocket in the future, and they were right they just turned out to be powered by Apple and Google and not by Windows. Same with tablet computers. Their own implementation failed but the tablet computer exists today and is pretty successful, except is not Win PC based but based on mobile platforms.

Same with AI, it will definitely happen in the near or distant future that consumers will be tied to AI assistants for work and life, same with full autonomous cars, but nobody knows yet who will be the one to win this battle, that's why tech giants are lighting piles of money on fire to make sure they'll be the ones on top of the rubble pile at the end of the AI war. This is the next gold rush.

Can't wait till Little Johnny's AI assistant will tell him his social and political views are wrong and sway him in the "correct" direction. Oh wait, that's already happening.[1]

Interesting. Is there any comparisons on the difference in latencies at which those memories operate? I assume Apple's memory operates at lower latency due to it being directly on the CPU package rather than in a socket on the motherboard.

>Google's review team all are in India and they cannot write clear English.

Which is ironic considering the reason they went to India and not other countries with cheap labor is that English is an official language there.

I was talking about modern day designs with high frequency and low latency memory, not that older laptop in particular.

Plus, isn't that laptop also thinner than models with slotted RAM? If you're chasing thinness then soldered is the only way to go even if you're not yet limited by frequency/latency.

Rinzler89··on Dell XPS13 RAM Upgrade
They are using slower ram. You're comparing apples to oranges. Look at the performance per watt of a modern laptop compared to a desktop or server with slotted components. Performance per watt and energy efficiency goes hand in hand with tighter integration of components.

Where will this explosive growth in SW keep coming from next? How many more music streaming apps does the market have room for? How many food delivery and ride sharing apps does the market have room for? How many more social networks and dating apps does the market have room for? How many more digital payment processors, stock and crypto trading platforms does the market have room for?

Just like with every job in history, the demand for SW jobs can't continue at the same high rate indefinitely, eventually you'll run out of things to digitize and monetize by moving to the internet/AppStore while also having too many candidates in the industry.

What then?

What's gonna stop kids from just asking ChatGPT to do it for them so they can get back to doom scrolling social media or playing videogames?

If kids today have access to much higher quality (and addictive) entertainment than books, how are you gonna convince them to read anything?

That tends to be the common reaction amongst SW developers who's jobs revolved around automating away other jobs or developing SW products that help employers monitor and squeeze more "efficiently" out of their workers, but wait util some form of automation or workplace surveillance threatens your own job, then you'll start to empathize.

>So I'm not sure about the economics of it once you include labour, rent, machine expenses etc...

Especially not at western levels of wages and commerical space rental costs.

Such services might be economically feasible in places like Taiwan or China where these skills and equipment is abundant at every street corner, but if you have to pay someone in the west where these skills are specialized with high hourly wages, to do all that for your laptop, the cost could be higher than if you would flip your existing machine on the used market and add another couple of hundred bucks on top to buy a new laptop with the exact specs you need.

Rinzler89··on Dell XPS13 RAM Upgrade
> It's sad that we have to resort to soldering components that used to be easily replaceable

Those memory components are now operating at much, much higher frequencies than in the good old days, and need to be mounted closer and closer to the compute units to reduce latency, making soldering them the easiest way for reliably achieving those frequencies and latencies for best performance.

Especially when you look at high end (g)DDR5 frequencies for APUs and what Apple is cooking with the Mx chips. There's no way you can easily get that using DIMM slots, so soldering it is.

Yeah we used to even have memory slots on GPUs back in the '90s, but those days are long gone now and it's not all due to planned obsolescence but simply due to the performance requirements whos goalposts have moved leagues and bounds since then.

FOSS dramas we knew from the past were around technical topics mostly where devs have differing views (to system-d or to not to system-d, GNOME file picker, etc) while Godot's drama is anything but technical, but only around the world views and identity politics of the CM.
