Rinzler89··on Employment Barometer in Germany Falls Further
>Germany is a developed economy with a highly skilled population. It will eventually recover from its crisis.

The real purchasing power of the average German worker has been on a steady decline for the past 20-30 years with sharper declines in 2008 and 2022 while the US has only been surging up. When is this mythical recovery coming? Any day now?

>Ehh. No. Europe is fine.

Burring your head in the sand to slow decline is not fine. It's just ignoring the problems hoping they go away but that's not how it works.

Rinzler89··on Programmer in Berlin: Culture
>when angela merkel welcomed all refugees during the syria crisis it was the first time i felt proud to have lived there.

This national delusion and inability to separate the harsh reality from wishful thinking, is why Germany is going to shit and why many skilled Germans are emigrating to places like Switzerland and the US with saner policies and stricter immigration laws. My current boss is the third one I'm seeing emigrate to the US where they're happier than in Germany and get better healthcare. And I lost track on how many colleagues I saw move to CH in the last 10 years.

I expect the politicians I vote for and pay half my salary every month to take care of their own citizens first and foremost and not prioritize outsiders who aren't their citizens/voters using my tax Euros.

Has every homeless and starving citizen of Germany been taken care of with a roof over their head and food? No? Then where are you going to house and feed all those foreign refugees you're bringing in? With what money? If you have money for refugees you should have for the locals as well first and foremost.

Has every citizen of Germany received timely healthcare in the public system and easy to find a place in kindergartens/school/Hausarzt? No, because you have a shortage of doctors and teachers? Then how is importing more unskilled foreigners gonna make these public staff shortages better for the local citizens?

This is not "right wing extremism" take, it's just basic economics and survivorship common sense based on availability of limited resources by respecting democratic principles of the citizens.

So politicians, please don't use my tax money to care for foreigners when you haven't yet taken care of the locals who pay your wages and fund the public systems we need. Please perform your virtue signaling on how generous and welcoming you are using your own private money and properties, not the taxpayers'. Because it's very easy to be generous with someone else's money.

Taht still doesn't answered how employers keeping track of the ethnicities of employees helps against discrimination in any way.

To me that's exactly what helps lead to discrimination versus not knowing ethnicities and treating employees as anonymized numbers which would be fair to everyone.

>recruiting/HR department no longer considered Asians of any ethnicity a minority and lumped them in with white males.

Why does HR even need to keep track of ethnicities? Is this a US thing?

Here in my EU country you're just employee/applicant #3215, that's it, nobody asks or enters your ethnicity anywhere to even be able to keep tabs on how many are of what ethnicity, since everyone is considered equal by default and judged exclusively on performance (in theory at least, in practice there are still biases, but tracking ethnicities won't fix that, since that's human nature).

What you're saying would even be against the law here since then it opens the door to bias and potential discrimination.

>(US) do better than anyone else: music, movies

That was true till 10-20 years ago or so when we had things like the Matrix and Lord of the Rings, but most of the modern entertainment content coming out of the US right now is not only low quality predictable slop but also filled with US-centric political messaging, identity politics and virtue signaling that nobody else outside the US identifies with or wants to pay for. Taht why so many bomb.

Rinzler89··on An e-waste dumping ground
>People should understand that proper clean electronic waste recycling does exist. [..] This is more a portrayal of extreme poverty than anything.

That like saying "people should understand that eating cake is also an option, you don't have to eat dirt".

Because then answer me why most e-waste dumping gets shipped off to those impoverished countries instead of being processed locally using the "cheap and clean" ways you mention, directly in the rich western nations who are buying all those electronics in the first place.

Throwing the blame back on the poor countries getting exploited by corporate interest of rich western countries doing greenwashing, feels like gaslighting.

Rinzler89··on ByteDance’s Bytespider is scraping at much higher rates than other platforms
Exactly. That line of reasoning just feels like established players kicking the ladder from under them in order to maintain their moat, when competitors start to catch up: "Hey, web scraping and data mining should only be allowed the right way, where the right way = our way."

"Free market" to them = the market where they get to write the rulebook.

>This is just overstretching of IP-laws if you ask me. This madness has to stop.

IP laws aren't a natural concept that exists by itself in nature, they're a construct manufactured and enforced by the governments. So if governments made them, then governments can easily rewrite them if they wish so.

But for that there needs public support and presure form voters to the politicians, but IP laws aren't something the average person cares or even ever thinks about, not when their core worries are inflation, CoL, housing, healthcare, education, etc, so the issue of IP laws is played exclusively on the battlefield of corporations and who has the most money for lobbying.

And corporations don't want laxer IP laws since that gives smaller players more leverage, versus the current status quo the favors the large plyers with the biggest litigation warchests to create large moats for them.

Rinzler89··on Rune: A local music player reviving Zune's classic aesthetic
Definitely. But even if the iPhone were to be delayed there's no way Zune would have made a significant dent in iPod's market.

It was already the established player and the user base was already locked in with hundreds of $ in iTunes purchases. The usets weren't gonna throw that away no matter how much better Zune would have been.

iPod's market dominance wasn't in some UX magic that couldn't be replicated or braten by competitors, it was in the iTunes purchases that made it comfy to own specific songs and also locked users in.

Rinzler89··on Rune: A local music player reviving Zune's classic aesthetic
IMHO Xbox 360, Zune, Windows 7-10 Mobile and Metro were very good UX implementations at their time, and bizarrely far superior to the touch mode Windows 11 offers today on tablets. WTF Microsoft, why are you regressing on all fronts?!

Zune never took off because it came too late and was going against a market already dominated by the iPod, and Metro was hated since Microsoft shoved it down the throats of desktop users with Windows 8, even though it was wonderful to use on tablets, except Windows tablets of the time sucked major ballsack since they were powered by anemic Intel Atom CPUs trying to run a full desktop OS compared to the ARM iPads running a mobile OS.

Rinzler89··on Meta Movie Gen
Yeah exactly. Video pipelines that go into productions we only see the end results of have a lot of steps to them beyond just the raw video output/capture. Even Netflix/Hollywood productions without VFX have a lot of retouching and post processing to them.

5 years ago there were no AI videos. A bit over a year ago the best AI videos were hilarious hallucinations of Will Smith eating spaghetti.

Today we have these realistic videos that are still in the uncanny valley. That's insane progress in the span of a year. Who knows what it will be like in another year.

Let'em cook.

That's something that can be fixed in a future release or you can fix it right now with some filters in post in your pipeline.

>By nearly every measure Twitter is doing a lot worse than it was before those people were fired.

Care to share which measures are those you speak of?

From what I saw, Twitter's revenue went down only due to the post pandemic economic slump following the pandemic bubble, and due to advertisers leaving en-masse because Musk won't purge the platform of hate speech and other content that's non advertiser friendly, not due to the workers who got fired leaving.

Why? Moving your project to another compiler for a one time change is creating needless work and potentially opening a new can of worms you don't want to deal with.

If you have something battle tested and you know it works then just stick with it especially that now you got the vendor out of the loop.

And who gets to decide if the "horse is crazy"? Amazon, Microsoft and Google?

Please, give me a break. Shouldn't voters get to decide that? As if big-tech are some kind of pillar of ethics in our society so they should get be judge, jury and executioner of acurate information.

If asked you either provide information about both candidates, or you say nothing for both if you indeed choose to be apolitical, but you can't lecture me with a straight face and some offtopic standup comedians that saying something good about one candidate while refusing to talk about the other is some kind of unbiased behavior we should endorse.

Case in point, would you feel the safe way of the roles were reversed, and AI would praise Trump and refuse to speak about Kamala? I bet there would be riots about the bias.
