RenThraysk··on New EU law could require iMessage and WhatsApp to work with other platforms
I misspoke, should have said end to end.
RenThraysk··on New EU law could require iMessage and WhatsApp to work with other platforms
Being a developer and implemented both, I know. Maybe I just mispoke.
RenThraysk··on New EU law could require iMessage and WhatsApp to work with other platforms
A messenger just refuses to upgrade. So Alice who was sending Bob messages with no problem yesterday, today breaks. So back to having to use the same messenger.
RenThraysk··on New EU law could require iMessage and WhatsApp to work with other platforms
So no guarantee of interoperability.
RenThraysk··on New EU law could require iMessage and WhatsApp to work with other platforms
But future messaging apps shouldn't be getting less secure.
RenThraysk··on New EU law could require iMessage and WhatsApp to work with other platforms
Imagine there is a break in a cryptographic algorithm, say AES256-CBC. Now can I replace it in my messaging app, without having to coordinate with every other messaging app provider? Suddenly governments have a lever to prevent adoption of securer standards.
RenThraysk··on New EU law could require iMessage and WhatsApp to work with other platforms
Er, WhatsApp is based on Noise for client server protocol, and Signal protocol for peer to peer encryption. Both were open standards before WhatsApp implemented them.
RenThraysk··on New EU law could require iMessage and WhatsApp to work with other platforms
Is this an indirect attack on the encryption... seems to be.
RenThraysk··on Google open sources solar atmospheric water generator
Distilling still easier and more efficient than condensing water out of the air.
RenThraysk··on Google open sources solar atmospheric water generator
Then you don't need to extract water from the air. Just make it potable.
RenThraysk··on Google open sources solar atmospheric water generator
Fundamentally flawed idea. Places that need water are the most are dry, they have no humidity, as there is little to no water in the air.
RenThraysk··on Barcode Detection API
It's built into Google Lens. Use it occasionally to send files over wifi to phone, with webwormhole.
RenThraysk··on Solar Power/Batteries are 60% of planned new U.S. electric generation capacity
US should start make solar panels then. Worryingly even LG (Korea) recently announced they are withdrawing from solar panel manufacturing.

Even LED have more efficient designs, Philips makes the Dubai Lamp specifically for Dubai but you cannot buy them outside of Dubai.

RenThraysk··on ISO should make all standards Publicly Available
ISO pricing came up in a discussion had elsewhere recently.

Particularly about this "Ships and marine technology -- Survival equipment for survival craft and rescue boats" https://www.evs.ee/en/iso-18813-2006 About potential life saving equipment, and it's behind a paywall. Seems wrong, and the US Coast Guard are starting to reference it. Related concern was the US Coast Guard are no longer certifying certain equipment, so it moves the burden from USCG to private individuals & companies to ensure their safety equipment meets the required standards. No doubt insurance companies will look into whether the equipment meets the standard, and if not then refuse to pay out.

RenThraysk··on An UPDATE without a WHERE, or something close to it
TRUNCATE in a few databases effectively drops the table, and recreates it.

If typing in an interactive session usually use a specific user account for it, with minimal set of privileges. And wouldn't have the DROP privilege or any other DDL statement privilege. DDL would be scripted out, tested and ran using another user account that had only privileges on specific databases it needed.

RenThraysk··on An UPDATE without a WHERE, or something close to it
With databases, start a transaction first, then update, and look at the number of rows affected. If it's an oh shit moment, rollback, if not commit.
RenThraysk··on Apple Discusses “Screeching Voices of the Minority” in Internal Memos
Says more about the person sending the memo, than anyone else. And doesn't inspire confidence in their abilities.

RenThraysk··on To Fix the Social Sciences, Look to the “Dark Ages” of Medicine
I think you are arguing from bad faith. Social Sciences has problems and it seems unwilling to do better.

You had to be shamed publicly and widely. People have a right to know social sciences are this broken.

RenThraysk··on To Fix the Social Sciences, Look to the “Dark Ages” of Medicine
All papers get critical responses and suggestions for improvement. That proves nothing other than the submitted papers were considered to have some merit, and still possible inclusion in the various issues.

The problem is people (a journalist and RealPeerReview on twitter initially) identified quite a few of the hoax papers. And that does suggest there is a bubble within the field that has departed from usefulness and reality.

There is a problem within social sciences. Whatever is happening in hard science journals doesn't change that fact.

RenThraysk··on To Fix the Social Sciences, Look to the “Dark Ages” of Medicine
It did prove that the only people capable of pointing out there were problems with the hoax papers are people generally critical of the social sciences. That alone demonstrates a problem.

That's why the experiment ended early.

PZ Meyers is a doxing buffoon.
