RenThraysk··on How can traditional British TV survive the US streaming giants
Back in 2013, when BBC still was airing Top Gear with Hammond, May & Clarkson, and things like Bake Off.

Recent seasons of Dr Who were made with Disney+. They have killed a 60 year old franchise.

RenThraysk··on How can traditional British TV survive the US streaming giants
Feel this is a disingenuous question, as British TV will do just fine on streaming giants. Just the BBC cannot and will not make them, and struggling to survive.

RenThraysk··on Working on complex systems: What I learned working at Google
There is a certain amount of irony when the cookie policy agreement is buggy on a story about complicated & complex systems.

Clicking on "Only Necessary" causes the cookie policy agreement to reappear.

RenThraysk··on Why can't HTML alone do includes?
As a dev from the early 90s, I share the sentiment. Watching javascript become more and more complex and bloated for little to no benefit to the end user.

Don't Service Workers API provide this now, essentially act like a in-browser proxy to the server.

RenThraysk··on A faster way to copy SQLite databases between computers
There are atleast two SQLite bindings for Go.

https://github.com/crawshaw/sqlite

https://github.com/eatonphil/gosqlite/

Ended up with the latter, but did have to add one function binding in C, to inspect changesets.

Why did you bring up postgres then?
RenThraysk··on A faster way to copy SQLite databases between computers
I have, atleast to confirm it does what it says on the tin.

Idea for an offline first app, where each app install call pull a changeset and apply it to their local db.

RenThraysk··on A faster way to copy SQLite databases between computers
SQLite has an session extension, which will track changes to a set of tables and produce a changeset/patchset which can patch previous version of an SQLite database.

It's not a solved problem for people that aren't technically capable, and do not have internet access.

It's why Kiwix was developed, so people don't have to run a full web stack (which requires a rdbms) for wikipedia.

I don't know if LM is the answer and probably not in power deprived areas, but running a rdbms is defintely isn't it.

RenThraysk··on Internet in a Box
Your analogy with books doesn't really work. As a book is only usable by one individual at a time. Whereas a digital book can be shared.
RenThraysk··on Internet in a Box
I don't think determining factor is price, it is how easy or hands off the appliance can be.

Every postgres search implementation has atleast one internet connected postgres nerd on standby.

RenThraysk··on Database Protocols Are Underwhelming
MySQL X protocol solves some of these

* Notifies a client when a session variable has changed. Though I haven't used it so possibly not implemented.

https://github.com/mysql/mysql-server/blob/trunk/plugin/x/pr...

* Allows sending parameterised SQL and a collection of values together without preparing.

RenThraysk··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
Ah yes, good point.
RenThraysk··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
Think most people had no idea how it worked, it was magic to them.

iCloud hacks (like in 2014) have raised awareness for the need for E2EE.

Would just upload the keys
RenThraysk··on Branchless UTF-8 Encoding
Or-ing 1 onto codepoint before calling leading_zeroes() should get a decent compiler to remove the branch.

RenThraysk··on Turn your Android phone into a modern ham radio transceiver
Don't believe it needs a simcard for UHF/VHF.

Even without a simcard, emergency numbers should still work if in range of a cell tower. IIRC that's a requirement of all 4g devices.

RenThraysk··on Turn your Android phone into a modern ham radio transceiver
LTE over satellite is going to be the solution, as all existing 4g phones can do it.
RenThraysk··on Turn your Android phone into a modern ham radio transceiver
Sim card radios exist.

In the case of atomic file writing, the rename() doesn't cause a fsync of the parent directory?
RenThraysk··on FDA warns top U.S. bakery not to claim foods contain allergens when they don't
Ah genuniely missed that line, though as the FDA states is legal.
RenThraysk··on FDA warns top U.S. bakery not to claim foods contain allergens when they don't
It has nothing to do with profit, as it'll just increase the price of the goods to the consumer.
RenThraysk··on FDA warns top U.S. bakery not to claim foods contain allergens when they don't
No where in the article does it say allergens were added. If they were then the labelling could not possibly "misbranded".

RenThraysk··on Wild orangutan seen healing his wound with a plant
At some period in our evolution, it gave us pre-dispositions to certain tastes. Like our fondness for sweet & salty is universal.
RenThraysk··on Wild orangutan seen healing his wound with a plant
It's interesting for sure, but the mystery is how he gained that knowledge. Is he just repeating what he's seen humans do or his ancestors?
RenThraysk··on Caching secrets of the HTTP elders, part 1
Cache-Control: immutable will prevent roundtrips in atleast Firefox. This does mean that the path should be unique per version of the content. Like inserting a cryptographic hash in the path.
