RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: What do you want your camera to understand?
> I'm just curious what we would love to use object recognition for

Mix in ML to identifying food for their nutritional content, calorie intake monitor and future projection on your health if you stay on this course.

There is an old adage; You are what you eat.

I'm in the process of doing just this. I've taken pictures of every meal/snack whatever I ingested since 2005. I have over 15,000 images of food. Now that ML and computing power has come into play. I want to create this exact thing. Then correlate with my health. I want to see if there are cause and effect to my eating.

Furthermore, I have my exercise history as well.

I am what you call: Quantify Self.

Another use-case for your ask is cataloging or inventory. Two of the hardest and only human capable things. Imagine not a neatly piled but a large heap of things. How does an AI/robot make sense of it? What is it? How many are there? Is it heavy? Moveable? etc...

Your ask is very large open ended question.

What exactly is your endgame?

> quite convenient using Google Photos too

Googl already has too much of me. The last thing I want is all of my pictures stored, triaged, scanned, archived. I'm pretty darn sure they are using them as a great ML dataset. The images you get off of general searches are junk compared to the goldmine of a personally curated gallery. Big difference.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: What do you want your camera to understand?
I believe this is one key reason why so many use FB and willing to give up their identity including others; to keep track of their pictures.

I believe with the advent of the digital picture age and $15 128GB SDCards. People have so many pictures they can't manage, they will rely on anything that gives them a bit of control with minimal effort: FB w/ facial recognition.

I believe the singular aspect of what a camera should be able id faces. Then embed that info in the metadata to be pulled later.

The caveat to that is it must be kept private, never be uploaded onto a cloud and metadata encrypted.

Although like others, I have GBytes of pictures but the only ones precious enough to keep track of are the ones with faces on them. Object recognition, yeah kool but if I could query: find all pics of my son. BAM! be very happy.

So to give up my idea I'll never implement: 1. ID faces but only locally. 2. Embed face info as metadata of the picture file. 3. Crawler that walks regularly through all your pictures AND videos and ID's faces. 4. A natural query language to find all pics by relationship, name, age, sex, time and date

Re-reading your question, failed to initially understand. sorry.

Your question has already been answered: Google Lens. Matter of fact, i just used it on a tree I couldn't ID so I took a pic of it using Googl Lens and voila with their long reach search arm, BAM! I found it. I've done this many time befores with the Lens app. So not sure what more you can add to what seem to already work as your looking for?

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: How do you stimulate your creativity on a day like today?
I have to the same like everyone else. How I bring floating wild hair thoughts little more down to earth and may be "executable?" Here are some of my tactics:

1. I find someone to talk it to out loud. Even if that person isn't knowledgeable in the field.

2. Write it down as if you were doing #1 describing it to someone as if they were 5. You would be surprised how soon you find holes and/or new insights.

3. Read sites that encompasses vast knowledge of many subjects and not vertical to singular. A site I like to visit is: https://www.sciencedaily.com/ Vast latest articles and finding covering every subject.

4. Talk to people and also think in their shoes if they heard such an idea by putting yourself in their world view.

5. Find a movie that is in that realm of an idea and let your mind wonder.

6. Listen to something benign like trance/house music.

But most of all I like #1 where I talk to someone but moreover, talk to someone who has a breadth of knowledge and not necessarily vertical to any one in particular. Ideally a nerd be good.

RemingtonLak··on Dropbox saved $75M over two years by building its own infrastructure (2018)
Thanks will look into that. Don't understand why at smallest GCE instance why the cost is so high for virtually no traffic.
RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: An idea HN sentiment analysis
[UPDATE] googled it.. found it but not by individual "Ask HN" but a particular topic in general.

https://hackermoods.com/

Now if they can just narrow it down to each daily topic...

RemingtonLak··on Dropbox saved $75M over two years by building its own infrastructure (2018)
Well unfortunately I'm seeing this in my microscopic way. I moved off all of my domains and hosting from GoDaddy (shrugging in disgust) to Google domain+GCE. yikes, with virtually no traffic outside of me ssh'ing, my 2 vm instances is costing me $45/mon just basically sitting idle. I gotta be doing something wrong!
RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Documentary: AlphaGo made me weep for humanity
I hear what you're saying but I feel differently. I've done Okinawan Shudokan as well as Judo/Jiu Jitsu/Kenpo/taekwondo with my fav being Shudokan being the purest and most spiritual of them all. I feel lower ranking to fight against much more experienced instill a sense of impending doom unless your confident level is so high, it can exceed fear. Now granted you need that fearlessness to be successful but I feel until you have grasped sensible baseline fundamentals and grow in confidence. I think it will work against them in learning. They would tend to spar more reserved and timid actions. Whenever I was challenged by lower rank. I was the one who got hurt the most because they tend not to have any control :)

By the way, if you're sparring in a compassionate env is one thing but when your senior jams and/or breaks your fingers/toes and continuous unrelenting. Yeah, a little fear tends to creep in when you're sparring higher rank.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Documentary: AlphaGo made me weep for humanity
haha yes. so true. common theme for sure. Humans.....suck.
RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Documentary: AlphaGo made me weep for humanity
>growth of people and societies is proportional to the number of difficult conversations they've had, either with themselves, others, or as a society

So eloquently stated. Undeniably true for an entire society to grow emotionally, spiritual and mentally. We need to elevate the entire society thus education both academia and emotion IQ needs to rise. Just look at the current state of affairs in this country; USA. The division is so very sadly clear. Stating facts is like explaining quantum mechanics to a 1st grader.

Kool judo practice but little intimidating for lower belts or you all were equals? That makes more sense.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Documentary: AlphaGo made me weep for humanity
Yup, you have a point. I'm just rambling. Seriously. I am.

A lot of insightfulness here. I think I'll just sit back and read.

Just hoping you all get a chance to see it. Just for a well done documentary if nothing else.

I like HN for this reason. A lot of very insightful people. Hard to get away with nonsense and I mean that in the sincerest way.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Documentary: AlphaGo made me weep for humanity
I feel our (human's) great "weakness" or crutch is to care for one another. I believe we have this inherent nature to care. Unless you're power/money hungry, then even the act of killing won't deter as long as that person doesn't witness it. Case and point: Covid.

although I guess one could "code" that ethics like aka Isaac's 3 rules of robotics but how would one do that to an autonomous killing drone? Or an autonomous car that needs to decide to kill one person or several depending on what? that one person is a father of 6 and does humanitarian work vs the other 6 are criminal low lifes? How does one "code" such algo?

Yes AI is a tool but then it wields a car, drone, finances that determines whether you get cancer treatment or not when you're 80.

Yeah, we're entering into a new phase of humanity.....

Funny, these are the exact same philosophical thoughts the Terminator movie series was addressing. Where the AI did become onto itself and became "self aware." Then did the only logical thing: get rid of humans which is the cancer to everything's existence.

Lots existentials to go through. Should we force AI to go through that? Maybe should be a prerequisite before we let it "live."

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Documentary: AlphaGo made me weep for humanity
Beautifully said. Seriously.

Well stated. Yes, I cannot agree more that you need challenges like what Sedol faced. He admitted playing AlphaGo made him a better player. I too feel same whenever I get challenged but there is difference of the challenge's virtue depending on the outcome. An emotionally strong deeper understanding stable person will possibly see growth, but the flipside is someone not ready/incapable/not mentally mature enough will probably get their souls crashed.

In martial arts, we always fight against a belt above as one cannot better one self being challenged by stagnant skill level.

One of the main reason why I like coding. Even if similar task, I try a different path to challenge myself.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Documentary: AlphaGo made me weep for humanity
understood and I understand. Documentary was edited beautifully and well done. It delivered the emotions it was edited for perfectly is all I'm saying. Hats off to the director.

However, having said that and we all know AI will have bugs and will very well take paths we couldn't have imagined. It isn't so comforting to think companies like Palantir making wrong profiles of you and autonomous driving running over people will all be possible. But may be we can delete racism, discrimination, prejudice? yeah.. probably not until humans are left out of the algo and let it self code itself up.

I'm just saying, the future will be interesting when emotions are put aside and people, places and things profiled in a manner totally unconventional today.

It's rather ironic that almost all of man's greatest discoveries were made accidently like vulcanization of rubber or post-it or even antibiotics.

Wondering what kind of future humanity will have where everything is done deliberately and unconditionally. No emotions, accidents or serenity at play.

Coincidently, my greatest finds in life were almost all accidently including the love of my life and my fav food. I would have never met her nor find my fav food if it wasn't for certain unforeseen accidents.

PS> It isn't possible like chess to precalculate Go strategies. The documentary proved that and the game itself dictates that.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Documentary: AlphaGo made me weep for humanity
yes, whenever I speak to my wife. Now I know why ;-)
RemingtonLak··on What can I do to protect myself in case Google randomly bans my accounts?
This actually is a good idea since calling them out can help. However, you then will need to open yourself up completely by making your plight public. I kinda like what little anonymity I've created ;-)
RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Do you know any company likely to beat Facebook?
yeah, understood and yes, generalizing but not doing indepth analysis here. I also hypothesize that depending on the caste you're in, FB may not be even in your radar. As most of the world sees FB has not only a window to the world but more importantly direct connection to people in the United States as in India a good percentage have never been on an airplane nor will ever leave the country. Furthermore, they mostly marvel at the standard of living they think everyone here lives like. Again depending on the caste, they literally sees all of the US living large like we're all Kim Kard...
RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: How can someone use my email to purchase service or products?
actually, I haven't yet signed up for a service that doesn't require email verification. But you may be right, that some places just do the "email verify" as to look legit but don't actually require. I guess and hoping it's just randomness but disconcerting so many people have my name ;-) But in places I would never have thought. It's like being Mr. Jones Smith Johnson but in China.
RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Why do social networks always move toward unusable UIs?
Feature overcrowding, used to be desktop, now everything must fit into mobile. I believe they all feel need to change with the times. Have you seen any fast food joint looking the same and thriving? For that matter, most retailers as well? Cars? I think you're insight into change is not with them but you.

Their goals is to entice new users and making it exciting for existing users.

You on the other hand like your comfort zone. We all do.

However, you may want to notice that you've changed too. you wear the same clothing fashion as you did 5yrs ago? If you're selling something and your product doesn't change with the times, you're antiquated and will die a slow death.

A bit of irony about needing to change is there is ONE company who haven't "changed" but yet they are now worth $2T... Apple. Their new shiny shiny looks the same every year but people buy sight unseen. They however are an anomaly.

One change I HATE: deprecated usable API's and changing functionality from version to version sucks.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Can I temporarily combat the brain fog from lack of sleep?
Good recommendation. I'm not even a casual user, but may be once every few months where 100mg would last me almost a year at 10mg bites. But yes, definitely start with a tiny bite. Who knows, may be the "micro dosing" may be enough.
RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Can I temporarily combat the brain fog from lack of sleep?
10mg of THC Sativa edible. With possibly 80-160mg of caffeine whatever amount that is your trigger threshold.

THC helps to slow everything down a bit so you can clear the fog and focus one a singular thing. The caffeine to keep that edge going.

Also extremely conducive even if you're not a fan of this genre of music but game/trailer sound tracks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1P5U7NlVoA

Music with lyrics or jazzy makes you need to focus on the music.

Alternative is this incredible little gem of youtube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iD4dMdpNe_I incoherent background noise.

However, as few have said, bottomline is you can't circumvent sleep deprivation. Best you can do for yourself is take a power nap but even with sleep, because of the crap happening. I still recommendation the above suggestion.

RemingtonLak··on Desktop-as-a-Service: Will you soon be running your “desktop” from the cloud?
Doubt it. With so many things out of our control, in particular our privacy. I think most of us would want the last vestigial of it...our home computers private? Having said that, we're rapidly giving that up with ChromeOS/connected home & work PC's. However, I'm trying to give it my all to keep what little that I can private...private. Like family pictures, personal documents etc.

I'm already doing a hybrid model of google drive/dropbox etc.

Ack, who am I kidding??! Privacy? Really?

Unless you literally type in by hand and print out from an air gap computer? Then maybe moving onto paper and pencil? then maybe stone carving? back to film cameras you develop yourself?

I actually see someday in the future and maybe even near future of divided counties, cities where there will be connected people vs not. Literally.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Having Children
I wouldn't consider yourself selfish by not having a child. Bringing in a child into this world is simply contributing to society, but then you can do that in many other selfless ways. But I feel there will be a personal sacrifice by not having a child. I consider myself a loner beside loving my wife, I have no reason to leave a legacy. However, there is something to be said to share your life, experiences and knowledge with someone who can benefit. Passing that to someone is rewarding for sure i.e. Big Brothers, bt there is something more, something special if it is your own flesh and blood. Something very innate.

Lastly, typically you and your spouse will most likely die separately. Even with families close by, there is nothing like knowing your own flesh and blood will be there. The inherent trust and bond is undeniable.

>>Lastly, you absolutely will LOSE your previous life. There isn't a part of it you can retain. It's gone....period.

Little overly stated since my son needs me 24/7 now. However, overtime, he'll need this space and my wife and I may be able to get back to where we were. Of course one factor to consider is age so this is where having your child at an earlier age has it's advantages. So truly get back to where we were will most likely be based on your age.

Long short of my existential crisis when I pondered the exact same. Late 40's and a newborn is super super hard.

I realize it really comes down to state of your life, your partner and your extended family. You absolutely need support. Not even to question that. If no support then a fulltime nanny to help. I'm a fulltime dad, quit my fulltime when my now 1.5yr was born. Not really by choice but a necessity as we have no local support, especially with the pandemic. I will need go back to work. My wife works fulltime so I get up at 6a and goto bed at 1a daily.

If you're happy with where you are and where you're headed i.e. retire AND you're absolutely in stride with your partner. Then you should, else I wouldn't.

I never knew family. Grew up abused and alone so never had a family feeling.

A child is a love hate relationship that has no recourse. the infamous commercial where a sick dad opens the door to his child and asks for a sick day? Yea, it can't happen. no matter what your mood is or what your current beef is with your significant other and boy..you don't know what a fight is until there is a child. you better learn to get over it quickly.

Lastly, you absolutely will LOSE your previous life. There isn't a part of it you can retain. It's gone....period. You will need to forge a new life.

Fun romcom to watch that can give you an absolute realistic even though fictional movie is:

Life as we know it https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1055292/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

PS> I'm going to blog about this because its actually bullsh*t that there isn't answers to some basic questions about parenting. Most of what you read, reads like a marketing fluff for a blender.

An article I ran into recently worth reading:

PPS> Join a dad's group and seek the same. It's a shame men don't have the balls to ask for advice and help...unlike you.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Amazon release a phone?
I believe the behemoth they are, they are working on their own. Underline hw layer is already extracted by phone manuf and amzn wants to have their own app store (salivating over how much aapl makes from theirs). You can pretty much build your own phone with needed os and apps. It just won't be apple store or google play compatible but it will be a working smartphone with all the same look/feel. Or buy out KaiOS? :) Alternatives are coming out of the wood works as of late.

I don't think it would be far stretch to start anew in a "new" country ripe for new beginnings. Particularly when their gov is blocking most apps anyways. Good way for Amzn to work into their system without offending their gov. Amzn is a company who will sell your soul to the devil for a penny because there is 7 Billion potential new accts. Btw they have already moved away from android on their Echo devices onto their own RTOS.

I know FB tried and failed to roll out and get adopted with their FB phone, but that's bc they are FB. At this point, failure is their only option. Unfortunately with 2 Billion naive users with no viable alternative, FB death will be slow although they did just provide a "take with you" option of all of your posts so.. may be speeding up? but again to where?

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Covid Burnout – Quit FAANG to found a startup?
I was in your exact position including having worked at a FAANG last Oct. In Silicon Valley still, I quit before the pandemic to be a fulltime dad to a newborn, thinking after about a yr I can go back and find something. ack. then the pandemic hit. Now...I'm contemplating your exact situation of starting something.

I have too many ideas, all great, but seem to lack focus and motivation although running out of money should be enough....but aint?

I guess "startup" isn't what I'm after per se but more of some simple very vertical SaaS I could code up myself like time sheets, scheduling, proj mgmt, journaling etc.. why? I can't deal with deal people/employees at the moment for many obvious reasons. I should be able to create something where I could launch and maintain myself.

I'm looking for something that is.. 1. minimal administration w/o needing a physical location 2. self servicing platform where content is user generated 3. fee based, no ads

I'm trying to get motivated by watching these adventurous people: https://www.indiehackers.com/businesses

Time is of the essences so I need to get moving on it. however, hard when I only have a 1-2hr window max a day after 10pm provided he sleeps through the night :(

My current and possibly the idea I may implement: A private social network, necessity is mother of all inventions. I'm need a way to share my kid with extended family that isn't IG/FB/Whatsapp etc.. I want something more closed, personal, grandmother tested and very private. The common denominator is it needs to work on very under powered tablets running Android 4.0.

Writing up a mini bizplan then wireframe then proto it as a PWA. No one these days uses a PC.

Hit me up for mutual motivation? lakota @ gmail

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Amazon release a phone?
It was the most idiotic thing I've ever seen. What kind of marketing research told the Prod Mgrs that a 3D phone with 6 cameras with 3D moving like images help a mother with screaming toddlers order more diapers?

What would have made a better phone focusing in consumables by Amzn customers is a one handed phone with a builtin barcode reader (which is did have with a dedicated button) that will directly find/order the item. Making buying and ordering their priority function.

However, conjecturing, but I believe they may be working on another phone. Lower cost focusing on the more ludicative India market. Probably also coincides with them getting and probably launching soon their satellites for internet. And also trying to figure how not to be based on Android.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Do kids make you happier?
Your assessment is the most astute observation I've ever read about what a child means to you. wow.

For me, it's the former where the child will bring me more/higher purpose to my life.

I am a father to a 1yr. I've never felt (never having a pet) unconditional love. My boy (currently ;-) does not care how much I have or make, what I look like or my personality outside of not mistreating him. In return, he gives me a look, a hug, and a kiss that is undeniable unconditional love. My wife's look, hug and kiss are "conditional." ;-)

Before going any further, let me preface with my thoughts about family; I've never experienced a family. I grew up in a broken one where I was physically abused and I ran away at 18. Before having my child in my 40's, I did not want to be a father incase I became what my father was.....resentful, hate filled, neglecting asswipe. Having grown up in that environment, I wanted to make a difference to children who may be in the same or worse situation. So I volunteered to became Big Brother to 3 fatherless boys in my 20's. I grew up...fast. Kids are special and found out just being there for them is good enough to make you Superman. That's all it took. No need to lecture or do psycho analysis to make the "better", but instead just being there was all they needed. PS> the 3 boys became my grooms men.

Does my child make me happier? yes and no. Happiness with a child is a weighted question. Does my child make me happy? yes. Does he make me happier? difficult to answer but I lean towards no.

I think the answers to your question will be weighted by: what age you had the child, where are you in your career, are you happy with yourself and your life, do you love your wife and extended family? Will your child be a trophy you craft or someone you mentor allowing them to grow based on your influences?

Am I happy right this minute? Well, it's 2am, I just got finished cleaning his playarea of dried up breast milk and food, cleaned all of his bottles and toys, prepared meals for him for next few days and to top all that off, he just woke up crying in the middle unexpectedly. No reason why. FYI I'm a fulltime dad.

Is the happiness so strong it can overcome the hardship of doing something that doesn't come with instructions? this very minute; no. Tomorrow morning when he wakes up cooing at you? yes.

Lastly.. omg. Can't wait for him to turn at least 5 if not 7ish for this first Disney World trip and start on the Star Wars series of films :) Having high expectations that he will like the same...I'm over the moon about my potential happiness. I can only hope but never force. He needs to lead the way to his happiness...not mine.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Self-taught webdev with lots of free time. What should I learn?
No shortage of great suggestions here. Lotsa knowledge pouring in!

So I'm there with you although not quite as extensive.

May I suggestion: mobile app? I'm just now trying to get into PWA using vue. I have quite few mobile ideas and trying to pick your fav child is hard ;-) But using a bit of Biz Intel, research is pointing me to certain direction.

Also why not make it side hustle? Check out indiehackers.com (I have no affiliation). Great motivation and inspiration.

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Films that made you see the world differently?
I try to watch movies that show me who/what I am, where I came from to better understand myself for the future wherever I can find it. One requirement however, is that it cannot be a reflection of current events except that is of my own making.

Not in any particular order and may repeat many of the fine recommendations already said....

1. The Five-Year Engagement https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1195478/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

2. The Trigger Effect https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117965/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

5. The Vow (i got married to the music from The Nationals - England (instrumental) :) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1606389/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

6. The Family Man (Nicolas Cage before he gone off the edge) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0218967/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

7. Boyz n the Hood https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101507/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

8. Up (I'm a new dad and I did Big Brothers to 3 boys so Up means a lot to me) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1049413/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

9. Ghost Town https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0995039/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

11. One Hour Photo (Reminding us how incredible Robin William...was ) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265459/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

WOW...few things..

1. I realize a little psych profiling can show how old you are ;-) [EDIT] I mean how old I am!! :)

2. I'm a sucker for romcom light hearted shows that gives me time to reflect.

man.. I realize I need to look into this list, grow it and rewatch.

Enjoy!

RemingtonLak··on Ask HN: Self-hosted family photo managers?
Very kool. didn't know I needed them! thx. Not having had time to look indepth, wonder if either platform will allow embedded videos, particularly from youtube? currently have a bunch uploaded as private links since it was the easiest to share. It would be awesome if they allowed it or may be could be mod...

[EDIT] wow..you have given me some motivation to look. Didn't realize how many there are. however, still want/need to find one where I can embed youtube videos but thx for the push to look!
