Refreeze5224··on Today I've made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%
> historically speaking, efficiency has always won out

Too bad AI is not about efficiency. It's about headcount reduction, which is exactly what Coinbase is doing here. AI just gives them plausible cover.

Refreeze5224··on Today I've made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%
There are definitely a tiny handful, which absolutely makes them the exceptions that prove the rule, and a terrible idea for Coinbase or anyone else.
Refreeze5224··on Police Have Used License Plate Readers at Least 14x to Stalk Romantic Interests
The decades-long history of police abuse of power isn't enough? There is not a single power they have not abused eventually, and it's quite obvious that introducing new powers will inevitability be exploited.
Refreeze5224··on US Supreme Court reviews police use of cell location data
And why should we defer to ancient principles in a case regarding cell phone metadata that can be used in innumerable ways to violate privacy? To me it seems obvious that if the 4th Amendment were written today by anyone other than cops, this exact case would have been covered.
Refreeze5224··on Tesla discloses $2B AI hardware company acquisition in filing
That's it, they're jealous of Musk. It's not the Nazi salute, they're just jealous they don't get to exploit people like he does.
Refreeze5224··on Surveillance Pricing: Exploiting Information Asymmetries
That won't work. The issue is a fundamental power imbalance being exploited by the seller. An individual will never have the time, money, or energy to be on an equal footing with companies that do this. So giving people a bunch of algorithms and data does nothing. It's just like giving people EULAs and pretending that because they have the stated terms, it somehow makes them an equal party. The solution is to ban situations where these power imbalances exist. Too bad capitalism is inherently based on them....

Thank you for doing your part to keep webapp pentesters in business.
Refreeze5224··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
This time there are serious national security and sovereignty issues driving the change though, which are much more powerful motivations to succeed.
Refreeze5224··on Afroman found not liable in defamation case
Serious answer: cops are not accountable for their behavior, in the vast majority of cases.

Refreeze5224··on Ryugu asteroid samples contain all DNA and RNA building blocks
Please don't just post slop anyone else could have gotten from AI. It undermines the entire purpose of this site, and reduces the quality of discourse drastically.
Refreeze5224··on Treasure hunter freed from jail after refusing to turn over shipwreck gold
The real story here is that civil contempt can net you an indefinite prison sentence without a conviction, and if you're lucky a judge will decide to let you out. Over something you may or may not even know.
Refreeze5224··on Nanny state discovers Linux, demands it check kids' IDs before booting
Have you not ever heard of The Register? It's not a news site, it's intentionally opinionated. And the headline is accurate anyway....
Refreeze5224··on Atlassian to cut roughly 1,600 jobs in pivot to AI
No, the assumption is that companies are more interested in cutting labor costs than productivity. Even if you screw up and need to hire back 50% of those you fired, you still cut the labor costs of the 50% still fired. And you can pretend to be a cool, thought-leading, "AI-native" company, which might be enough to juice your share price enough to offset any actual productivity loss.

Capital will always be in opposition to the cost of labor and want to make it as close to zero as possible, and AI is a plausible story for attempting that, regardless of the reality of AI efficiency.

Refreeze5224··on Atlassian to cut roughly 1,600 jobs in pivot to AI
You're mixing up what AI is for compared to horses and cars. Horses/cars enable people to be more efficient. AI enables companies to fire people.

Horses/cars improve productivity. AI reduces payroll costs. That's the whole game here.

Refreeze5224··on UK MPs give ministers powers to restrict Internet for under 18s
We can't handle unchecked pursuit of profit, freedom isn't the issue.
Refreeze5224··on UK MPs give ministers powers to restrict Internet for under 18s
It is, and I have no doubt that is the entire point, despite them "thinking of the children."
Refreeze5224··on Ad-tech is fascist tech
This one is for all the Facebook and Google employees that still seem to think they are merely "solving hard problems at scale" or "connecting people".

Refreeze5224··on Judge orders government to begin refunding more than $130B in tariffs
I think you're mistaking what's happening here. Companies are not discovering greed. People are finally recognizing that greed, and the greed inherent in the system, and recognizing that just because it's "part of the system", it's not OK.
Refreeze5224··on Dulce et Decorum Est (1921)
War is the poor dying for the rich. The only way to pay respect to those who have died at the behest of the rich is to explicitly recognize who sent them, why they were sent, and to do everything we can to prevent it happening again.
Refreeze5224··on Layoffs at Block
A fundamental attribute of capitalism is that labor costs are a regrettable cost center, and any reduction in labor costs without a resulting loss in profit/perceived productivity is a big win. AI is a big win for capitalists, and not so much for anyone who is now suddenly "made redundant". And since we treat shareholder value as sacred and inviolate, too bad for workers who lose their job in this deal.
Refreeze5224··on Layoffs at Block
It's simple: it's just a lie. We are seeing the goal of AI in action here, which is reducing payroll costs.
Refreeze5224··on In 2025, Meta paid an effective federal tax rate of 3.5%
This is totally true, if you ignore the entire history of taxation in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Refreeze5224··on In 2025, Meta paid an effective federal tax rate of 3.5%
Yeah, screw Robert Reich! Always looking out for the workers who make up the majority of this country. Why won't he look out for the poor multi-national corporations, who have no one to advocate for them or their tax rates?

Refreeze5224··on Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court
SCOTUS rules for the rich and powerful. Most of the time Trump is aligned with them. Sometimes he does dumb shit like tariffs, or things that upset the order the rich and powerful want to maintain, and they rule against him.
Refreeze5224··on Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court
Constant fear.
Refreeze5224··on AI makes you boring
> I asked AI to help and it told me why it was broken and how to fix it, and also fixed it for me.

This is just it, you didn't learn anything here. In 3 months, you will only remember that AI fixed some issue for you. You will have none of the knowledge and experience that struggling and thinking and googling and trying things out until it works provides. You may as well have asked some other person to fix it, and they would at least have learned something.

Also, anyone could be plugged into your job when it works this way. All they need is someone who can type into a prompt. Which is much easier to find than someone who actually knows the what and how and why of the code. But hey, you fixed the bug, it ships, boss makes money, the company wins. But you sure don't...
