RealStickman_··on WebP is so great except it's not (2021)
You have to open the images in a new tab to get the full res version. Then the webp lossless looks perfect.
RealStickman_··on WebP is so great except it's not (2021)
WebP is actually based on a video codec. It's just that VP8 pretty much never caught on with hardware encoders/decoders apparently.
RealStickman_··on WebP is so great except it's not (2021)
The first picture is very hard to spot imo. I had to zoom in a bit to spot it initially. You'll see the "blockiness" is slightly worse in the webp version. (Left side of the image, head height)

For the second image, I opened the jpeg 90 [1] and webp 90 [2] versions. Comparing those two, there are clear banding issues to the right of the neck. Slightly less visible are the darker bands circling around the whole image, though still noticeable if you know where to look.

Comparing the jpeg 90 version with either webp lossless, jpeg 100 or jpeg 95, I can spot some very slight banding in the jpeg 90 version just to the right of the neck. Very difficult to spot though without zooming in.

RealStickman_··on Epic vs. Google Trial Verdict, a Win for All Developers
I compared launch price across Steam and Epic for a few games a while ago both cost the same.

Why would I choose Epic and loose

- Linux support - social features - the workshop - (mostly) having a single launcher

They also pulled a few games off Steam just before launch after they'd already been advertised there.

RealStickman_··on Fake chips, I got stung
I bought a used OnePlus 3 on ebay and because I already had another OP3 I noticed right away that the screen was different. Especially in a dark room it was obious that somebody had replaced the original OLED screen with a cheaper IPS one.

I did end up getting a partial refund for about the price of a replacement OLED screen.

RealStickman_··on Wayland Isn't Going to Save the Linux Desktop (2022)
My point is simply that I can't see any evidence of Wayland using more memory than Xorf in the scenarios we can compare.

You're free to find or create benchmarks of lighter Wayland compositors and prove me wrong, of course.

RealStickman_··on Wayland Isn't Going to Save the Linux Desktop (2022)
Sure, but purely based on the comparisons between KDE and Gnome under Xorg and Wayland, I don't see any indication that Wayland would inherently use more memory.

It's simply a matter of using one of the lighter Wayland compositors, none of which have been tested in the comparison you linked.

RealStickman_··on Wayland Isn't Going to Save the Linux Desktop (2022)
Agreed, but this will change in the feature when Wine and later Proton get native Wayland support.
RealStickman_··on Wayland Isn't Going to Save the Linux Desktop (2022)
Based on your source Wayland vs Xorg memory usage looks to be within the error margin and I don't know which computer you're running where an additional 100MB claimed make the system unusable.

I can absolutely recommend FolderSync. It's not open source, but absolutely solid for automatic and scheduled uploads of various files.
RealStickman_··on Roundcube open-source webmail software merges with Nextcloud
I guess it's fine if you want a widely integrated solution that can do a lot of different things. I'm using it only for myself, so definitely not representative of using it in a company but maybe my experience helps.

The just working part, at least for me, are the calendar and contact plugins. Never had any issues with those. File sync with the desktop client works mostly fine on Linux where I use it most of the time. However, I've run into issues with it on Windows. Using the automatic bandwidth limit for example might cause Explorer to freeze. [1] Also forget about the automatic upload feature in the Android client, I switched to FolderSync for a reliable experience.

I've managed to get OnlyOffice working, Collabora Office previously broke for some reason. However latest upgrade also broke OnlyOffice. The solution for this is to put the secret and authorization headers into config.php in addition to the OnlyOffice plugin settings. [2] No idea why, but that is a thing.

My Nextcloud runs as a normal PHP application and I haven't had any issues with upgrading yet. Going from, I think, version 23 on Debian 11 to 27.1 now on a different machine running Debian 12 since I started using it.

Maybe I should find something more focused on file syncing, but the all-in-one approach of Nextcloud and its various plugins makes trying some new services very easy.

I'm using i3wm and maybe I've been doing scaling wrong, but I've only needed to set Xft.dpi and one setting in Polybar (because it doesn't read Xft.dpi) to scale everything toba comfortable size.

RealStickman_··on Microsoft steals access data: Beware of the new Outlook (German)
Why wouldn't it change the layout immediately? If the user changes the setting, I would imagine at least a sizeable portion of those users want to use their desired keyboard layout to enter their information and might be unable to do so using whatever layout is selected by default.
RealStickman_··on Microsoft steals access data: Beware of the new Outlook (German)
> - it asks for a keyboard locale, which then relocated the @ symbol somewhere totally bizarre (why it would allow this instead of forcing the keyboard it is installed with is beyond me, and I just chose UK vs USA, as I am used to this choice being more important for autocorrect and AUS spelling is more UK than US. No - apparently there are a bunch of keyboard layout differences that will then mean you need to google in an external device to work out why the @ symbol has moved, which means you can’t log in with your Microsoft account

I'm sorry, but obviously the keyboard layout moves keys. How else would you expect someone to type using dvorak, have Z and Y keys swapped on German language keyboards or swap keys to perform the most common function for a language. ö and é for example are on the same key but swapped in which one you need Shift for between German and French layouts.

RealStickman_··on AMD officially drops Vulkan driver support for Polaris and Vega archs on Linux
This only affects the official AMD vulkan driver. Mesa's vulkan driver is still being supported, check if you're using that.

RealStickman_··on AMD officially drops Vulkan driver support for Polaris and Vega archs on Linux
Apparently this isn't as bad as it sounds. Reason being, there are three drivers for vulkan on Linux with AMD GPUs.

The first one is RADV, part of the mesa project and will continue to receive updates with mesa.

AMDVLK comes in two variants, one open source and one closed source. The open source variant (and maybe the closed source one?) are affected here.

If you want to check which one you're using, try `vulkaninfo | grep driverName`. If it says `radv`, you're good.
